The Estates must be particularly described and a power for the Executors to use legal means to recover the Timber money due from Mrs Taylors childrens shares of Hinton Hall Estate.

I Henry Coates of Hinton in the County of Suffolk Do hereby publish and declare this to be my last will and Testament and by these presents I nominate and appoint Mrs Ann Coates my wife and Henry Coates George Lewis Coates and William Coates my sons Executrix and Executors of this my will and ordain and direct my said Executrix and Executors to well and dispose of all my real and personal Estate and Effects wheresoever and of what kind or sort soever in any manner they may judge most proper and after payment of all my just debts and funeral Expences then I do Give and bequeath the following legacies vizt to Mrs Coates my wife the sum of Six hundred pounds absolutely and to her disposal and likewise the interest during her life on the sum of four hundred pounds which sum of four hundred pounds is to be placed out at interest by My executrix and Executors and the interest arising therefrom to be paid to her during her life and at her decease the principal to be divided equally between my two Grand Children Sarah and Ann Whiting ^The child of W[illia]m Whiting and Ann his wife^ if they should at that time be of age and if not it is to be continued at interest by my Executrix and Executors and the principal and interest equally divided between them as they shall respectively come of age and if either of them should not live to come of age then the principal and interest to be paid to her who may happen to live to come of age I ?likewise hereby Give and bequeath to my son George Lewis Coates the sum of three hundred pounds to my son William Coates the sum of three hundred pounds To my son J[ohn] A[bbot] Coates the sum of Two hundred pounds To my son Edward Coates the sum of

Two hundred pounds and to my son James Coates the sum of Six hundred pounds together with the Lease or agreement for a Lease on Hinton Hall Farm ^he paying for all things usually paid for by and outgoing to an incoming tenant accord… to val[uatio]n^ but is my desire that the business of the said Farm should be carried on by my Executrix and Executors one year from the Michaelmas after my decease before a division is made of this part of the property &c on that Farm and if the Estate Effects should not produce a sum sufficient to discharge all the legacies ^as^ herein directed then and in that case Thereby direct a deduction should be made by my Executrix an Executors from all the said legacies except Mrs Coates in an equal proportion that if so much p… c…on each as it may be necessary to reduce them and I hereby declare the reason why there is no legacy left to my Son Henry Coates as that he has received of me at sundry times such sums of Money as ?come fully equal to any of the legacies disposed of in this my will * and likewise to every ?service which said legacy ……………………………………………………….

I hereby further direct that should any overplus arise ?out my estate and effects more than is disposed of by my will I hereby nominate and appoint Mrs Ann Coates my Wife Sole Residuary legatee for the same and that she is to receive whatever such overplus may be and if it is sufficient I hereby direct her to pay to my son Henry the sum of one hundred pounds and apply the remainder to her own separate use and benefit in any manner she may choose or think proper In case Mrs Coates decease before the Res[idue] can be ascertained the Testator gives the Res[idue] to all his Children equally H[enr]y C[oates] J[oh]n Abbott C[oates]

Appeared personally Henry Coates of Romford in the County of Essex Gentleman and made oath that in the month of June thousand Eight hundred and nineteen he visited Henry Coates of Hinton in the County of Suffolk Gent his late deceased Father and on the fourth of the said Month of June he had some conversation with his Father on the subject of his will when he produced this paper appeare or instructions for his will all in his own hand writing (except the interlineations herein after mentioned ) contained in a sheet of letter paper with two additional slips affixed thereto one of which contained the particular of the deceaseds Real Estate and the other contained the Residuary Clause of his personal Estate all of which papers are hereunto Annexed and are marked A B and C that the deceased having expressed a desire to sign his and Will being the paper writing marked with the Letter or the appearer read over the same to

him and in order it elucidate some parts thereof to the appear in the presence and by the direction of the said deceased made certain insertions or interlineations therein as follows

He [Henry Coates junior] maketh oath and saith that the same are in the very same plight and condition as when he inspected them on the said fourth day of June one thousand eight hundred and Nineteen save certain interlineations made therein

Solicitor at the instance and by the desire of the said deceased this as appearer hath heard and believes and save the marking thereof with the letters before mentioned Henry Coates.

Same day sworn in virtue of the annexed Commission before me William Cross Commissioner.

[Robert Gostlin White Thomas Woodcocke of Halesworth both also swore that the changes were made by Henry Coates senior]

The following day he [Thomas Woodcocke] set about preparing the said Draft of a will from the paper and on or about the third day of the aforesaid Month of November [1819] he was informed as the fact was that the deceased had expired suddenly early in the morning of that second day of the same November <snip>

This Will as contained in three paper writings marked A B & C was proved at London 5th June 1822 before the judge by the oath of George Lewis Coates the son one of the Executors to whom admon was granted being sworn by common only ot administer power reserved to Ann Coates widow the Relict and Henry Coates and William Coates the sons also and other Executors whom they shall apply for the same

Summary

Will of Henry Senior of Hinton Hall who died on 2 November 1819, before the lawyers had finished writing up his will. It is therefore in his own hand and with amendments.

Henry Coates’s wife Ann received £600 plus the interest on the sum of £400 and was a residual legatee.

Executors Henry Coates, George Lewis Coates and William Coates and wife Ann Coates. They were to carry on farming for one year to enable the legacies to be paid.

Son Henry Coates junior had already received the equivalent of the legacies. If there was a surplus on the estate, then he was to get an additional £100.
Son George Lewis Coates legacy of £300.
Son William Coates legacy of £300.
Son John Abbot Coates legacy of £200.
Son Edward Coates legacy of £200.
