- c1863 Memorial for Jesse Osburn
Birth: 1780
North Carolina, USA
Death: 1862 Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky, USA
Jesse Osburn (and this is the correct spelling of his surname) was born in about 1780 in North Carolina and died about 1863 in Johnson Co., Kentucky, near Flat Gap. According to a book by family historian, Josie Walker Blakey it was written in a letter from 1865 that "On the point of a ridge overlooking Mud Lick and mouth of Jesse Osburn's Little Creek, there is a very old graveyard...I am told that one can count five or six graves there from the old unmarked field stones. Walter Estep who now lives on Patterson Creek (formerly Jesse Osburn's Little Creek) told me about the graveyard. He is in his early sixties, and he said that Mantford Lemaster had told him with assurance that Jesse Osburn is buried there."
Jessie was married to Sarah "Elizabeth" Lemaster 18 February 1807 in Knox Co., Kentucky. They had ten children: Levina (Mrs. Wm. Henson), Sarah (Mrs. Samuel Seagraves), Jonathan Osburn, Lewis Osburn, Edmund J. "Ed" Osburn, Nancy Jane (Mrs. Wiley Blevins), Mary Ann "Aunt Pop" (Mrs. John Winkle), Wilkerson Osburn, Andrew Osburn, and Henry Osburn.

- from fwp735 on ancestry, an image containing the following text:
“The Marriage of Jesse & Elizabeth, early 1800, Mud Lick Creek, Kentucky
The records show that there were two children born before the recorded marriage of Jesse and Elizabeth. There wasn’t always a preacher to marry people in those times so they got permission from her father and later when a preacher passed through their area they were married. The records show they married then in 1809 and the census showed they already had two children.
Jesse Osburn and Elizabeth Lemaster Osburn lived on Mud Lick Creek near the mouth of whawt is known today as Patterson Creek, a right hand fork of Mud Lick Creek. They had about 1000 acres at this settlement in Kentucky. Of which he gave some of the land to his sons, while others moved to Washington County Arkansas.
As many of the Osburn families went their separate ways, they also began to spell the Osburn name how they thought it was spelled, which is how many variations have been acquired.”

From “Descendants of Jesse Osburn” - http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/a/t/William-G-Mattheis/GENE9-0001.html
- 18 children listed! - some may be duplicated
- “Sarah [Elizabeth Sarah] was likely Jesse's second wife. Evidence:1810 census for Knox Co, and 1820 and 1830 censuses for Floyd Co, report 3 children born before 1810, two of whom were girls. The two girls are positively identified as Lavina who Married William Henson, and Sarah who married Samuel Sagraves.
It is possible, however, that Sarah Elizabeth was Jesse's only wife. In these times many marriages were not formalized for some years because of long periods between availability of ministers and JPs, etc.
Have seen Elizabeth Sparks listed as wife, but no hard data yet.
Jesse and Sarah Elizabeth L. both came from Lee Co., VA to Knox Co., VA at about the same time (1802-1804), and settled in the part of Knox Co., that became Harlan Co. in 1819. As Lee Co., VA and Harlan Co., KY are adjoining, it is presumed that their move was a relatively short one. Jesse and Eleazer L. left Knox Co., about 1815 and both settled permanently on adjoining land on Mud Lick Creek less than 2 miles from Flat Gap [KY]. Both families appear in the 1820 and 1830 Floyd/John co. Census. The 1850 Johnson Co., Census lists Eleazer L. age 90 living with Jesse Osburn family.”

From various ancestry.com public trees:
- lists marriage in 18 Feb 1809 [about age 19], and 22 children between 1797 and 1829 with birth locations in several States - obvious errors!

In reply to: Sheri Osburn 's message, "Re: Henry Osborn s/o Jessie and Elizabeth?" on 21:36:39 07/12/00 Wed
Sorry to say, but the website of William Mattheis [which has been moved or deleted as of 2011 - now at http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/a/t/William-G-Mattheis/GENE9-0001.html] contains fiction regarding the ancestry of William Osburn (who was married to Matilda Buchanan) and father of Jesse Osburn of Floyd and Johnson Cos., KY.
There is absolutely no evidence connecting Jesse Osburn's father William Osburn to the Osborns of Loudoun Co., VA or Richard Osborn of Chester Co., PA. It appears that William Mattheis got his information from the book "An Osburn Family" by Josie Walker Blakely. In her book, Josie gives Jesse Osburn's parents as William and Matilda (Buchanan) Osburn which is family tradition. She then mentions various William Osborns (various spellings) who lived concurrently with Jesse's parents and she *speculated* that perhaps one of these other William Osborns was the same as Jesse Osburn's father William.
Well, William Mattheis has turned Josie Walker's speculation into "fact", without having any evidence at all.
In your genealogy files, please do not connect the Loudoun Co., VA Osborns to William Osburn who was married to Matilda Buchanan. If you have already added them based on William Mattheis' webpage, please remove them. Please do not pass on William Mattheis' mistake.
I have a website, Osborne Origins, at http://home.att.net/~osborne_origins, [can’t access as of 2011] with much information on Osbornes (all spellings) from all over the U.S. Another speculation in "An Osburn Family" was William Osburn who died in Laurens Co., SC in 1817 and who had a son Jesse W. and son-in-law Jesse. I have traced Jesse W. to Cherokee Co., AL and Jesse to Gwinnett Co., GA. Neither of these is the same person as Jesse Osburn of Floyd and Johnson Cos., KY.”

I see that I will have to update my home page for sure. Back when I posted that I was an innocent rookie. The info did not come from Blakey's book unless my great Aunt took it from there. It turns out that it actually come from family oral tradition that was first set down in writing in the early part of the 20th century by one of my Henson relatives.
Since posting that report, I have been on line many times in many places to point out that (1) I live about 12 miles from the home place of the Loudoun Osburns, (2) have extensive and detailed data about them, and can easily prove that their William born in 1749 could NOT be Jesse Osborn's father. While there are some pretty good theories about who Jesse Osborn descended from, their is not absolute proof that I am aware. Howard Osburn makes a very strong case that Jesse is actually related to the family of Capt Enoch Osborne. His is perhaps the most logical argument the I have heard to date. And while there are no obvious facts extent to connect his Osborne family to the Osburn brothers of Loudoun Co., VA I offer the following as a matter of conjecture and interest:
1) It is believed that he father of John and Nicholas Osburn of Loudoun Co., VA used the spelling of Osborne for his name.
2) Loudoun Co., VA is just a few miles across the Blue Ridge Mtns. from where Howard O. locates many of his Osborne relatives in WVA
3) I have well documented evidence that the offspring of John and Nicholas Osburn moved into what was Frederick Co., VA and is now W. VA.
4) I have less good documentation that suggests that Capt. Enoch Osborne lived in Loudoun Co. for some time - - perhaps during the Rev. War.
5) Descendents of John an Nicholas migrated into eastern KY where we find them, Osbornes related to Capt. Enoch and Jesse who is well documented in regard to his life there.
So yes, bad boy Bill did have some bad data on his page (could be more as I was far less carefull about documenting things then), but he shares this particular error with many other folk so don't be too hard on him for his rookie efforts.
Better yet, if anyone out there can really put some hard evidence on the table regarding the origins of Jesse Osborn of Mudlick in what is now Johnson Co., KY please tell me. My email address is mattheis.bill@hq.navy.mil. As far as the balance the Osburn data on my sight. Been there a while but still pretty darned good.
