- BURIAL: When Ivor visited England in 1933 he put a stone on his mother’s grave in the Vicarage of Cheadle-Hume, Leicester County. [family remembrances]
Probably Cheadle Hulme (All Saints) Churchyard (near Stockport) - however, burial records could not be found at All Saints in Cheadle Hulme.

- Had a sampler, perhaps by her mother?
On 27 Aug 1868 when Charlotte was 22, she married Arthur Rhys THOMAS, son of Robert THOMAS, in Reg Office, Leicester Reg Dist, Leicestershire, England. Born abt 1839 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales. Arthur Rhys died ca 1876; he was 37.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- his name was originally entered as William Ryse Thomas, born Cardiff, Wales [not proven]
- name listed as Arthur Rhys Thomas other sources and freeBMD and as Arthur R in 1871 census.

- family sources say his father’s name was Robert Thomas, but gives no further details. Not proven.

- c1841, the county of Glamorgan Wales has (abt) 118 parishes, grouped by 10 hundreds including Swansea - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/hundred.Swansea.html
The hundred of Kibbor includes the parishes of Cardiff St John, Cardiff St Mary, Llandaff etc..

Thee are several versions of this story from family sources:
- Both his sons were orphaned when both his parents died of "galloping consumption" ... Ivor and Robert were orphaned and lived with their maternal grandparent and cared for by their Aunt Sarah Joyce.
- "I understand that her husband had left the family and when Ivor and Robert were left as orphans they went to live with their grandparents in Leicester."  ... “My mother said that her grandfather 'was a travelling salesman who kept on travelling' suggesting that he had left the family before Charlotte's death.”
Which version is true? Or a combination of both? We haven’t found any death record (at any date) for Arthur yet.

Can’t find his birth registraton freeBMD 1837-1850 in Glamorgan County:
- no listings at all for William Rhys [wrong name]
- searched for Arthur R: only 1 listing in Glamorgan County between 1837 - 1845:
Births Q1 Mar 1844
THOMAS Arthur Rhys Bridgend 26 331
(The district Bridgend in the county of Glamorgan, includes Newcastle etc)
Perhaps this was a late birth registration?
- broadening the search to just Arthur, there are the following bith possibilities:
Sep 1837, Thomas Arthur, Swansea, 26 296
Mar 1839, Thomas Arthur George, Swansea, 26 452
Dec 1841, Thomas Arthur, Llanelly, 26 540 [Llanelly spans Carmarthenshire & Glamorgan]
and as Rhys Thomas:
Jul-Sep 1837, Thomas Rhys, Llanelly Carmarthenshire, 26 332
others as Rhys in 1841, 1843 in Carmarthenshire
and as Rees Thomas:
Apr-Jun 1844, Rees Thomas, Swansea Glamorgan, 26 501
Apr-Jun 1844, Rees Thomas, Lampeter, Cardiganshire, 27 57
Jan-Mar 1839, Reese Thomas, Cardiff, Glamorgan, 26 329 … etc.

Family Postcards:
3 old Chinese hand painted postcards exist (sent by Reg and Mary Thomas in England to his cousin Joyce Schoenecker nee Thomas in Victoria BC, probably about 1990). 2 of them at least were posted by Joyce’s father Ivor Thomas and contain his handwriting. The other was probably send by her Uncle Robert Thomas. [Transcribed by Joyce’s daughter-in-law Claudia Boorman]:

1) 1906 - Addressed to Miss Alice Joyce, 48 Hinckley Rd, Leicester, England. [stamp removed]
[Note: Miss Alice Joyce was Ivor and Robert Thomas’s first cousin, daughter of their mother’s sister Sarah Chambers who married a Mr James Joyce]
On reverse, hand written: “Shanghai, 5-3-06”
[2 columns, each containing 4 chinese characters, and under this is written:]
“Dzing-nyoen te Soo-tsen
Nyung zing siang-mo.
?eh dzing-nyoen te -
Nyung - pok nyung -
kaung an no
RT” [RT might be Robert Thomas, Ivor’s brother who was probably in Shanghai in 1906; this looks to be a poem in Chinese - I might have misinterpretted some of the handwriting]

2) 1923 - Addressed to Mrs J Joyce, 13 Brenthurst Road, Willesden, N.W., London; Hong Kong postage stamp worth “four cents” intact; 2 postal cancellation stamps: Ju 8 Shanghai and Shanghai 3? Jun 23?
[Note: Mrs J Joyce probably refers to Mrs James Joyce who would be Sarah nee Chambers, sister of Charlotte Chambers who married Arthur Thomas]
On reverse, hand written : “Shanghai China. Chinese ladies in middle class. Chinese are particularly fond of flowers and birds.
“Will” got a nice p.c. from “Hilda” and has possed in on to Mary for her collection.
We are all well and hope you are the same.
Ivor
Also, date added by a rubber hand stamp: “Jun 3 1904” [perhaps added later, and in error?]

3) 1926 - Addressed to Miss Hilda Mitchell, ℅ Miss Alice Joyce, 13 Brenthurst Road, Willesden, N.W., London; Hong Kong postage stamp worth “four cents” intact; postal cancellation stamp says Shanghai 24 Jul 26
[Note: Hilda MItchell was Alice Joyce’s niece]
On reverse, hand written : “Shanghai. I find out today that you are collecting postcards and send you this one from China.
This is Chinese music - cymbols - gong - and the volume of sound is possibly more noticable than the quality.
Ivor Thomas
Also date added by a rubber hand stamp: “Jul 25 1904” [perhaps added later, and in error?]

RESEARCH NOTES
- Our assumption has been that Sarah at least helped care for her 2 orphaned nephews Ivor and Robert Thomas, either while they were still living with the grandparents (see 1881 census), or in her own home after the grandparents could no longer manage.  These are all assumptions based on a passing comment in a family story.
I have tried to consider everyone's circumstances at this particular time.
In 1881 William and Phoebe were in their 60s and were to die in 1887 and 1886 respectively.  So they could not have cared for the boys for too much longer.
At this point Sarah was long married and living in Hugglescote and Donnington Parish, Leics. with husband and 2 daughters (12 and 8).  I'm not too sure of her exact distance from her parents’ home, but certainly not within walking distance, making it more difficult to offer help to her parents.  But would they have had the room or the money to take in 2 more boys?  If so, it didn't last.
