- From the Westcountryment in PEI book [with notes added]: “James Yeo Jr. [James Yeo III’s son] lived by laboring in the Parish of Kilkhampton. .... He was the son of the local shoemaker, James Yeo Sr., who married Ann Osborn late in 1788. There were 3 other children of the marriage [as well as James Jr.], John, Elizabeth and Mary. [Another source adds 2 more sons to this marriage: a John who died as an infant, and William (1793-1818)]
“Then Ann Yeo died and in 1807 James Yeo Sr. was married again to Grace Francis. Five years later, when his stepmother had one child, Samuel, James Yeo Jr. married her 18-yr old sister Mary with the interesting result that when his second half-brother Thomas and his own first son William were born in 1813 it was possible for his stepmother to have uncle and nephew, who were also cousins, one at each breast, a feat which was still part of the family tradition exactly 150 years later. James Yeo Sr. was literate and his eldest son [James] learned to write an excellent hand and to express himself very well, if colloquially, on paper...”
