RESEARCH NOTES:
- From a descendant:
My grandfather remembered being told that his grandmother “went funny” and was put into a mental institution.”
“In the 1891 census, Mary Elizabeth was no longer living with the family, as it was recorded that only George and the children were living together.  There was a similar situation in the 1901 census. No search for a “Mary Elizabeth Weadon” produced any results for either the 1891 or 1901 censuses.  However, after speaking to a member of staff at the National Archives, I was informed that patients of mental institutions were often only recorded under their initials.
I then found records for a person with initials “M.E.W.” living as a patient and described as a “lunatic” living at Suffolk County Lunatic Asylum in the Woodbridge district in the civil parish of Melton in both the 1901 and 1891 censuses.  Her date of birth is detailed as being around 1861.  I also found a death record in 1909 for a Mary Elizabeth Weadon which was registered in the Woodbridge district.  This information suggested that “M.E.W” was my great-great-grandmother, as the rest of the family were living a very short distance away in Chillesford, Suffolk”
“I discovered that Suffolk County Lunatic Asylum is now entitled St Audry's Hospital for Mental Diseases.  I emailed Ipswich Record Office in England with the above information in 2009. I requested information such as confirmation if MEW was Mary Elizabeth Weadon, where and when she was born, date of death, reason for her admission to the institution and any other information that they may have relating to her.  I also wanted to know if possible if there was any record of family members visiting her.   They responded with the following:
We hold the deposited records of St Audry’s Hospital at Melton, the collection reference is ID407.  Included in the collection are several items which may help find the detail you seek. These are admission registers, lists of patients, case books and the registers of deaths from 1907. There is on Visitors book that covers the period of interest but this refers only to regular inspections by the Visiting Committee and does not list the people visiting patients.’
They also added that all patient records are subject to a strict 100 year closure period so to have access to the deaths for 1909 I would have needed to obtain permission from an official.  At the time (in 2009), I didn’t proceed any further with this information.”
In Q1 1882 when Mary Elizabeth was 23, she married George WEADON in Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England. Born in Q2 1855 in Came, Dorchester Reg Dist, Dorsetshire, England. George died in Winchester Dist, Hampshire, England, in Q2 1939; he was 84.
