Fifth Generation (Continued)
Family of John HENSON (54) & Sarah Elmira ORRICK
111. Martha Matilda “Mattie” HENSON (John4, Jesse3, Lavina OSBURN2, Jesse1). Born on 23 Feb 1876 in Crawford County, Arkansas, USA. Martha Matilda “Mattie” died in Butte, CA, USA, on 20 Oct 1961; she was 85.

- 1880 US Federal census, Mountain, Crawford, Arkansas, FHL fil 1254041, NA Film T9-0041, page 490D, listed as Martha, living with parents:
Martha Henson, 4, dau, single, white, female, born AR [film definitely says Martha, but think this is Mattie]

- 1900 US Federal census, Davis Township (excl. Shawnee City), Pottawatomie, OK Territory, US [unclear handwriting] - Mattie NOT living with parents.
- Mattie Henson took care of Mary Lovell Henson, Floyd Henson’s wife, at the birth of their son, Floyd (Buddy) Henson. Mary had lost two children before birth due to an RH factor (she was AB negative) and also had a big tumor at that time sharing the space in the uterus. She had persuaded herself that she could not have a male child so when Mattie told her it was a big boy she could not believe it and denied it. Mattie held Floyd Jr. up high to show Mary she had a son. Mary was not well for a time, and Aunt Mattie cared for the family for a little while. I know this as my mother Mary told me about it because she remembered it so vividly. The memory of my brother’s birth is the very first memory I have strongly enough to remember each detail.

- 1917 - Mother’s obit shows Mattie as living in “Arlando, FL” as Mrs. Mattie Colins

RESEARCH NOTES:
- possibly listed as Martha in the 1880 census?
- in father John Henson’s obit (abt 1938) he is survived by six daughters, Mrs. J. R. Corbin of San Jose, Calif., Mrs. D.M Groves (?) and Mrs. J.L. Williams of Shawnee, Mrs. B.F. Cummings of Kenedy, Tex, Mrs. B. A. Butler of Vilas, Colo., and Mrs. T. C? Geake of San Jose, Calif - which one is she? Could the J.R. Corbin be the same as Collins?
- 1930 US census - quite a few entries under both Matilda and Mattie Collins - hard to know which one without husband’s name, location etc.. Same goes for Matilda or Mattie Corbin.
- 1940 US census in California - a John Corbin b. abt 1875 in hospital in San Luis Obispo CA (no parent or spouse listed) - is this him? Or more likely:

- Ephriam was a water department engineer for the City of Shawnee. He served in this post for 19 years. He died of a heart attack at breakfast after shoveling snow from the driveway of his home on Tucker Street in Shawnee. He moved to Shawnee in 1893 from Arkansas. He worked at night so Lula tried to keep the house quiet in the daytime so he could sleep. When we visited, Grandmother said “Children, please be quiet as Grandpa is sleeping.”

- Lost one of his hands in a sawmill accident. [Looking at a later photo, he lost his right hand.]
According to the family story as written by his daughter Mildred:
“Daddy’s early years in Canada saw much hardship, as did most pioneers, but his seemed beset with loss. Our home and everything in it was destroyed by fire which caught from the stove pipe. Then a new log barn, which had not quite been finished, and had been temporarily thatched with straw, was caught by a spark from a spring brush fire and destroyed. Next came the loss of most of his cattle. Those days it was open range but the railway was about a mile west of us and the right-of-way was not fenced. The grazing was better there that day than in the dense bush and they were on the track when the train came around the bend. Daddy got no compensation from the railroad either.
But the biggest tragedy followed shortly. Daddy was working in a sawmill near Bondiss. He got his right hand caught in machinery and badly mangled. It was 100 miles to Edmonton. The crew got a speeder, phoned Edmonton to clear the tracks and took Daddy on the speeder to Edmonton. He bled profusely but with many transfusions and a long time in the hospital he pulled through, but he lost his hand. All of these things happened in a matter of a few years – all before I could remember any of them.”

- 1932 May 2, signed an affidavit declaring the “Descenants of Matilda Buchanan and William Osburn [to fulfill the requirements of a Buchanan will 100 years before]

- 1939: first grandchild was Raymond King, then Yvonne Gillespie [followed in 1942; both now deceased]

- 1960: celebrated 50th anniversary, and travelled to BC to visit relatives. Bessie needed assistance walking and had dimentia.

From family sources:
- Angus died when he was almost 80 in a care home in Athabasca, AB, Canada (perhaps from cancer of lung? or emphasema?) don’t think he had Alzheimers?
- A response from a cousin: He 'died with his boots on' just sitting in a straight backed chair. That would not be the case if he had Alzheimers. He always went down for lunch and when he didn't they went looking for him and he was sitting with his chin resting on his chest, having died so peacefully.
- Written by his daughter Mildred: “Mother and Daddy celebrated their golden wedding [anniversary] wth their children and grandchildren in 1960. Dick and Joan hosted the celebration and in his presentation of watches to our parents Dick spoke for all of us when he said they had taught us well the meaning of honor and integrity. At that time Mother’s health had failed and the remaining years of her life were spent in a nursing home in Camrose. She passed away in the spring of 1968. Two months later Daddy, who had been in the Athabasca Senir Citizens Home for several lyears, also passed on. They are both buried in the Boyle Cemetery alongside Mother’s parents.”

- Arkansas: Vital Records Statewide registration of births and deaths in Arkansas did not begin until February, 1914. Compliance was not complete, however, for another thirty years. Statewide registration of marriage did not begin until 1917, but individual counties usually recorded marriages prior to that date. For birth and death records prior to 1914, and marriage records prior to 1917, write to the clerk of the county in question - http://birthdatabase.net/arkansas/birth-records.htm - subscription site

- Oklahoma: Statewide recording of births and deaths for Oklahoma began in October 1908, although compliance was incomplete for as long as two decades. - Regarding Land Grants, from http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/land/Pages/land-records.aspx
“The British North America Act of 1867 established Crown Lands as a provincial responsibility. Only land petitions for Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec) were retained by the Government of Canada. With the acquisition of Rupert's Land in 1869, western lands came under federal control. In 1930, responsibility for Crown Lands was transferred to the provincial governments of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The federal government retained a copy of the original patents issued for these lands. The actual homestead applications and files relating to the grants were transferred to the provincial archives.”

Also http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/land/land-gr...-western-canada.aspx
“In 1871, an order in council initiated a uniform land survey of the three Prairie Provinces as well as the railway belt of British Columbia. The land had to be accurately described and located through cadastral surveys before Letters Patent could be issued to a homesteader.
The Dominion Lands Act required that each homesteader provide proof that the land had increased in value through additions (cultivation, building construction, etc.) costing labour and/or capital. The Dominion Lands Act stipulated the improvements that had to be made to a land grant before a homesteader would receive a Letters Patent from the Crown. When a homesteader filed an application, the local Dominion Lands Office screened and validated the claim, and sent an inspector to the property to confirm that the improvements had been made. If the Board approved the application, it was forwarded to Ottawa for the "preparation and issuance of patents" by the Lands Patent Branch. Letters Patent were issued to grant or confirm title to a portion of land. They are the first title to land, and serve as proof that the land no longer belongs to the Crown. They were issued by the Registrar General's Office of the Department of Secretary of State from 1867 to 1883 and by the Lands Patent Branch of the Department of the Interior after 18 July 1883.”
