HUMPHREY Frederick G COMPTON Surrey S.W. 5g 2155 [includes parishes of Guildford, Ripley and more]

- Then I came to Skipton in 1966, joined the Womans Institute, then married again in 1972. Met up with a lot of people & still meet some of them now. My husbands mother bought this house in 1927, & I am in it. My husband died in 1991. I have never had any children. I have had both my hips done, & cataracts in the last 5 years. I still drive some drivers drive so fast now, my liscence runs out next year so I may give it up.

- It was my ambition to go to see where [my mother’s brother] went, now Thunder Bay [Ontario Canada]. My late husband said "You do not get on with the job of organising it'. Anyway I had a friend in East Aurora, near Buffalo so I went to see her then went to Toronto, flew to Thunder Bay after my husband died [1961]. I wrote to the Association County[?] Women of the World & they sent me an address of a contact so I wrote to her. I had booked into a hotel, so I went there, & she came to see me. Took me out on the Saturday & Sunday, then her friend took me out on the Monday, & we found my Uncles tomb stone. She also tried to find the street he lived at, but that was built on. The Parson where my Uncle went to his Church in 1908 I had writen to the Parson & told him I was coming. He was in the Church & he photo copied the death of my UNcle in his register. Flew back to Toronto & visited a friend in Coburg. They have been over this year.

RESEARCH NOTES
- “Sybil was married to a second cousin of my mother - the middle one of three brothers called Humphrey who shared a farm at Ripley in Surrey and farmed with their widowed mother in charge - eventually becoming Sybil Humphrey. When her husband died - in 1960, if I remember correctly - she moved to Yorkshire and eventually married a coal merchant called Pye who has also since died. As a child, after my parents divorced, I spent many school holidays at the farm in Ripley and Sybil was incredibly positive towards me - something I've never forgotten and the reason for still being in touch with her after all these years! After 1961 I no longer went to stay at the farm and rather lost touch for a while with that side of my family.
She is very active in lots of local organisations in and around Skipton, despite her age, and is very much liked by virtually everyone who comes into contact with her and still maintains connections with family and friends world-wide - and has travelled extensively.
She can remember being taken to visit her grandparents [when] aged eleven and again at thirteen. She remembers her Uncle Bert, who was slightly deformed with a lump at the front and back of his head, ploughing with three horses (not an easy task as I've done it myself with two as a young lad). Sybil arrived at Ripley [Surrey] as a fourteen-year-old girl and virtually ran the entire household from the moment she arrived there...and was somewhat put upon by old Mrs Humphrey I suspect - though Sybil is far too generous by nature to say so herself...it was some time later that Sybil was married - after WW2 and Mrs Humphrey's death.
Her grandfather was a miller before turning to farming and the 140 acre farm was rented by him.
Arthur, her father, was a blacksmith during the first World War (I think in Italy?) and worked as a shepherd in Sussex. Her mother trained as a milliner - I remember her well, visiting Sybil and staying at Ripley, a very neat small lady!”
