Dr. Willis M. Gowen, age 71, died suddenly on Saturday, April 24 in the Soldier's Memorial Hospital at Middleton.
He was a resident of Margaretsville.
He was a graduate of Everett High School in 1924 where he was a member of the first High School Band. He was an honor graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine in 1930, cum laude; serving his internship at Boston City Hospital, and, Quincy City Hospital.
He practiced at Melrose in Massachusetts.
He served as a staff member of several North Shore hospitals near Boston.
A veteran of World War II, he served as a surgeon with the rank of Commander in the U. S. Navy 9th Battalion C. B., participating in the invasion of the Iwo Jima, Mariannas, and Okinawa in the Pacific area.
He was a life member of Palestine Lodge AF and AM of Everett in Massachusetts where he would have been a 50-year member in June; and, Marland Lodge AF and AM of Kingstonin Nova Scotia.
He retired in 1959, however, he came out of retirement for six years and joined the staff of the Pineland Hospital and Training Center at Pownall in Maine as a director of the outpatients services, where he was engaged in genetic research of the mentally retarded and psychotic children. Several of his papers on those subjects were published in U. S. medical journals.
For health reasons, he retired in 1971 and returned to his home at Margaretsville.
He was a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners of the U. S. A.; a member of of the Massachusetts and Maine Medical Societies; the American Medical Association; and, a member of the New York Euthanasia Educational Council.
Interment at Margaretsville.
