Fourth Generation
Family of Lord John LISLE (3) & Lady Alice BECONSHAWE
5. Alice LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born abt 1640.

- Alice and John’s eldest daughter, also Alice, was deserted three weeks after her wedding. An attractive girl of 17, she was married at St Margaret’s, Westminster, in July 1657 [born about 1640] to the 19-year-old, and equally immature, Edwad Zouch, heir to extensive estates in northern Hampshire. Edward, however, quickly decided he preferred his rakish fellow royalists’ company in the Faubourg St Germain in Paris, where he died the following year. Selfish to the last, he must have destroyed for ever any spark of affection Alice may have cheerished for him by his dying delaration: he direted that she should have none of his assets. Disillusioned, she avoided matrimony for a while, and it was not until Oct 1663 that she married Richard Glanville.
In Jul 1657 when Alice was 17, she first married Edward ZOUCH. Born abt 1638 in Hampshire, England. They were separated in Aug 1657.

- Edward Zouch was 19 when he married Alice Lisle in July 1657. He was the heir to extensive estates in northern Hampshire.
In Oct 1663 when Alice was 23, she second married Richard GLANVILLE. Born ca 1640.
6. John LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1).

- John married Catherine Croke on 20 May 1679.
On 20 May 1679 John married Catherine CROKE in England. Born in Of Bonham, Somerset, England.

- Catherine Croke was a first cousin of the Unton Croke who had captured John Penruddock in 1655, and the daughter of Charles Croke of Bonham, Somerset.
7. Bridget LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born aft 1640 in England. Bridget died on 2 May 1723; she was 83.

- The Act [of Parliament reversing Alice Lisle’s conviiction] became law on 24 May and was a direct response to a petition by two of Alice Lisle’s daughters, Tryphena Lloyd and Bridget Usher.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- John and Alice Lisle were married 1636, and their oldest daughter was named Alice born about 1640. Bridget’s birthdate was therefore after 1640.
Bridget first married Dr Leonard HOAR Pres H C. Born in 1629/30 in England. Leonard died on 28 Nov 1675; he was 45.
They had one child:
16i.

They had one child:
8. Elizabeth LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born abt 1641 in England.

- Elizabeth faired better in marriage than her older sister Alice, at least initially. In December 1659 she married Robert Gurdon, a 44-year-old bachelor from Suffolk, when John Lisle made over 3,000 pounds for her. But she eventually went mad, and in her later years was looked after first by her sister Alice Glanville, and then by Robert Whitaker, the widower of her younger sister Margaret.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- her older sister Alice was born about 1640; her younger sister Elizabeth was born 1643, making Elizabeth birth date either 1641 or 1642
In Dec 1659 when Elizabeth was 18, she married Robert GURDON in England. Born abt 1615 in Suffolk, England.

- Robert Gurdon was a 44-year-old bachelor from Suffolk when he married Elizabeth Lisle in Dec 1659. [born about 1615]
9. Margaret LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born in 1643 in Temple Church, Hampshire, England. Christened on 3 Jul 1643 in Mr Lisle’s Chamber In Temple, Hampshire, England. Margaret died in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England, on 27 Mar 1686; she was 43. Buried on 27 Mar 1686.

- 1643 Baptism: The [Puritan] “Temple Church” entry of the birth and baptism of Margaret, daughter of John and Alice Lisle in 1643 discloses a considerable shift of [her parents’] loyalty since their Anglican wedding 7 years before. Margaret was baptised on 3 July ‘at Mr Lisle’s chamber’ in the Temple, in contrast to other baptisms in the Temple Church, and the ceremony was performed by “Mr Pearson, curate’. He was probably the James Pearson licensed in 1672 as a Conregational chaplain to John Lisle’s close friend Bulstrode Whitlock.

- 1672 Marriage: Margaret Lisle married the Reverend Robert Whitaker, a scholarly churchman from Lancashire. Denied a Cambridge degree because of his Nonconformity, he preache as a Presbyterian from about 1662, when he set up an Academy for Dissenting Students for those refused entry to the universities. He and Margaret lived at Stucton, a village near Fordingbridge. They were married at Dibden in 1672. Due to wartime fires the records are somehwat singed. Robert came from a long line Whitakers from Padiham in Lancashire. (Rutherfurd muddled him up too.)

- 1686 Death: Margaret was buried on 27 March 1686, a fortnight after giving birth to Robert. Margaret never received the 70 pounds willed to her by her mother [who was beheaded the previous year].

Other trees on ancestry says she married Sir Robert Hugh Witaker in 1674 in Grindleton Yorkshire - not sources
In 1672 when Margaret was 29, she married Robert WHITAKER in Dibden, Hampshire, England. Born in 1637 in Lancashire, England. Christened on 19 May 1637 in Symondstone, Padiham, Lancashire, England. Robert died in England in 1683; he was 46. Occupation: Gentleman And Clergyman.

From the book by Anthony Whitaker, 2006: The Regicide’s Widow, Lady Alice LIsle and the Bloody Assize
- Reverend Robert Whitaker, a scholarly churchman from Lancashire. Denied a Cambridge degree because of his Nonconformity, he preached as a Presbyterian from about 1662, when he set up an Academy for Dissenting Students for those refused entry to the universities. He and Margaret lived at Stucton, a village near Fordingbridge.
- Robert Whitaker was prosecuted by the Fordingbridge church wardens in March 1679 for not attending church, and was excommunicated on 2 May. An arrest warrant followed in Sept, and while there is no record of its being implemented, it is clear that he and his family (wife and several children) suffered.
- Their children, born between 1673 and 1686, were Tryphena, 2 Johns (the first died in infancy), James, Jeremiah, Mary, Daniel and Robert.

RESEARCH NOTES
Spelling variations include Whitaker, Whittaker, Whiteaker, Whitacre ...
- From the Harvey tree on ancestry: “The name 'Whitaker' is derived from a locality meaning 'of the white acre'. This described many small locations scattered over the countryside. The name is documented as early as 1273 with the spelling Witacur. The first record in Yorkshire County is of one Henricus Wyteacre in 1379. The name also is found with the spellings Whittaker, Whitacre, and Whittiker.“

Father: Christopher Whitaker b: 1612 in Grindleton, Yorkshire, England
- other sources list Robert dying in 1682 or 1683, son of Robert Whitaker Sr.

- Marriage in Dibden, Hampshire [in New Forest District, 2.5 miles SW of Southamptom].

- Number, names of children of Robert and Margaret vary between sources. One source lists son Joshua Whitaker b 22 Dec 1675 London England, christened Quaker, died 26 Sep 1719 St Buttolph’s, Bishopgate, London, England. This is questionable, because of location and religion (if correct). Robert was non-conformist, but I don’t know about Quaker? [now added to this tree, but can’t verify baptism]

- another genesreunited contact (Ray Glynns) claims another son of Robert Whittaker to be: “Thomas Whittaker was born 1669 in dewsbury. Robert and Margaret had many other children. Thomas went on to marry Martha Mitchell and they produced Hannah Whittaker in 1711 Dewsbury. She in turn married Thomas Bedford b1704 Dewsbury. I have built up this info from 3 sources. Ancestry.com;, Family search internet; and another person i am in contact with at Genes Reunited.”

- many online sources and versions for this whitaker line. e.g. http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.whitaker/1194/mb.ashx
- “Reverend Robert Whitaker, a scholarly churchman from Lancashire. Denied a Cambridge degree because of his Nonconformity, he preached as a Presbyterian from about 1662, when he set up an Academy for Dissenting Students for those refused entry to the universities.”

- another genesreunited contact claims to be descended from their son Robert: “Robert Whittaker (c1687) son of Robert Whittaker and Margaret Lisle, and his wife Mary Sylvester (c1691), through their son Thomas Whittaker (1715) and Ann Leight (1718). ... it seems there is some dispute between a couple of family branches, the whittakers from cheshire and the whittakers in yorkshire, my info comes from several sources, and it is over ten years ago i researched it all so its a bit foggy now, will try to piece it together again for you. I remember some of my 17 and 1800 people came from the igi, parish records, and a lot of visits to various places, but unhappily the dispute about robert whittaker and margaret lisle is still going on. It seems that robert whittaker can be placed in two different branches, but i am 95 percent certain that I am correct. their son daniel was given land in cheshire by john lisle.”

- another tree on ancestry says Robert Whitaker (1637-1718) born Dewsbury Yorkshire and died Padiham Lancs; another says Robert Hugh Whitaker (1640-1741), married 1674 etc. etc.

- the Harvey tree on ancestry by louisthefat, lists his as Hugh Robert Whitacre (about 1637 Yorkshire - abt 1718 Symondstone Padiham England). Lists sources as "Whitakers 1086-1990" by Bill Whitaker and from "The Whitaker Family of Buncombe County, NC and Genealogies of Reed, Harper, and Wright Families" by Bruce Whitaker.

10. Tryphena LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born aft 1640.

- The Act [of Parliament reversing Alice Lisle’s conviiction] became law on 24 May and was a direct response to a petition by two of Alice Lisle’s daughters, Tryphena Lloyd and Bridget Usher.
Tryphena married LLOYD. Born ca 1640.
11. Mabella LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born aft 1640 in England.

- Alice’s will provided for [Margaret’s] spinster sisters, Mary, Mabella and Anne, against the day of their marriage.

- A second petition [in 1689] by Alice Lisle’s other daughters, Anne Harfeld [sic], Mary Browne and Mabella Lisle, complained that, because of the way their mother had been treated, they were ‘left destitute of their fortune, and forced to subsist on the charity of their relations; all the real estate being entailed on the son, being five hundred pounds per annum’. Couild they be reimbursed from Jeffreys’ estate? The plea fell on deaf ears. The petition was directed simply to ‘llie on the table’, and nothing more was done.
12. Mary LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1).

RESEARCH NOTES:
- There is a mention of a Matthew Browne in trial proceedings - possibly Mary’s husband or at least related? -
“ Because Alice Lisle had pleaded not guilty, a juury had to be sworn. The panel was therefore summoned: ‘Proclamation was made for the jurors empanelled to try the issue between our sovereign lord the King, and the prisoner at the bar, to appear. And the prisoner desiring, by reason of her age and infirmities (being thick of hearing), some friends of hers might be allowed to stand by her, and inform her of what passed in the ourt; one Matthew Browne was named, and allowed of by the court to give her all assistance that he could in that matter.’” Although being denied counsel by law as she was charged with treason “she was fortunate in having Browne allotted to her. Besides being, as the report states, a ‘friend of hers’, he was also Deputy Clerk of the Peace, a post for which a legal qualification was necessary and oine he had held since 1675. His experience at assizes and Quarter Sessions would have given him an extensive knowledge of criminal law and procedure, so that ‘all the assistance he could give’ could go well beyond merely repeating to her what was said.”
Mary married BROWNE. Born ca 1640.
13. Beconsaw LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born bef 1653. Beconsaw died in 1653; he was <1.
14. William LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born bef 1654. William died in 1654; he was <1.
15. Anne LISLE (John3, William2, Anthony1). Born ca 1660. Anne died in England on 17 Feb 1709; she was 49. Buried in 1709 in Ellingham Church Cemetery, Hampshire, England.

- Anne was not yet born when her father had to flee for his life to the Continent. She never met her father, who was assassinated before he could return home.

- Alice’s will provided for [Margaret’s] spinster sisters, Mary, Mabella and Anne, against the day of their marriage. In 1686 she married Edward Harfell.

- “Dame Alice lies buried at Ellingham along with her daughter Ann Harfell about whom we do not yet know very much. The rather gloomy table tomb is just outside the door of the church, one cannot miss it. ‘Here lies Dame Alicia Lisle who died the 2nd of September 1685 and her daughter Ann Harfell who died the 17th of February 1709.’”

- In her will, Anne mentions the ‘red-quilted petticoat’, worn by her mother when she was executed, as a family heirloom.
On 1 Mar 1686 when Anne was 26, she married Edward HARFELL in England. Born ca 1650.

- Edward Harfell, the son of a former chapter clerk, was a lawyer who practised in the Cheyney Court in Winchester [Hampshire]. His first wife, Abigail, and their only son died a few days after Alice Lisle’s trial was over, and on 1 Mar 1686, he married Alice’s youngest daughter, Anne.
