Eighth Generation
Family of Grace BURROW (177) & Richard BAKER
294. Hannah BURROW (Grace7, John BURROW / KITE6, Joseph BURROW5, Dorothy NEALE4, Richard3, John2, Bennett1). Born on 15 Feb 1810 in Morwenstow?, Cornwall, England. Christened on 18 Feb 1810 in North Tamerton, Cornwall, England. Hannah died in St Columb Major, Cornwall, England, on 3 Apr 1879; she was 69. Buried on 6 Apr 1879 in St Columb Major Cemetery, St Columb, Cornwall, England.

- There is no solid proof that the Grace Burrow who had a base born daughter Hannah is the same person who married Richard Baker 2 years later. The timing works, but the location of the baptism  is off:

RESEARCH NOTES
- married a John Burrow in Morwenstowe 24 May 1846 - should read 1836. Was John a relative?
- searched baptisms: for Morwenstow - not listed in batch P00213-1,I03936-5 (no Baker’s at all), nor I04693-9
- Hannah was born before parents Richard? and Grace were married. Finally found baptism as Hannah Burrow, no father listed - does she really belong with this family?
- Husband John Burrows - possibly related? Doesn’t yet connect to anyone else in my tree that I know of.
- Found baptisms for 8 children - 6 CofE and 2 Wesleyan. The road to conversion must have been a bit bumpy though. The first 4 children were baptised CofE, likely as infants. The 5th child Grace was born 1845 but not baptised until 1860 in CofE. Their next child George was baptised Wesleyan as an infant. The next child Charles was baptised CofE in 1851 (no age). The youngest child Samuel was baptised Wesleyan in 1855 as a baby. I wonder why the long delay with Grace?… Then I found another baptism for Grace Burrah [sic], daughter of John and Hannah, chr. 1 Oct 1845 St Columb Major. Is this the same child baptised twice? Her birthdate of 1845 also provided on the 1860 baptism.

Is this the right Hannah in the census? [can’t always view others in household]

From another researcher:
- 1850 He enlisted in Scots Fusilier Guards on 18th May 1850
- In 1854 the Scots Fusilier Guards sailed from Cork to start their journey to the Black Sea.
- 23rd February 1854 they paraded at Buckingham Palace in front of Queen Victoria.
- They landed in the Crimea in September 1854 after first being deployed in Malta, Bulgaria and Turkey.
- Thomas was entitled to the Crimea medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol. A medal he would never see.
- 14th November 1854 a great storm sank the British ships carrying winter provisions.
- At Alma on 20th September 1854 the Scots Fusilier Guards lost 11 officers and 149 men; at Inkerman 5th November 1854 they lost 9 officers and 168 men (half their strength)
- Friends George Ramsey, blacksmith and Daniel Brown, tailor were soldiers with Thomas.
- Summer in the Crimea can be 30 degrees C. Winter can drop below freezing.
- Where is Thomas buried? Some unknown grave in the East that is forever England; he likely died of disease; cholera was a big problem and can at times kill in only a few hours. If he had been transferred to the converted barracks at Scutari in Istanbul, Turkey it would have been recorded and it isn’t. Scutari was where Florence Nightingale did her pioneering work … which sadly was often ignored by the powers of the day. 6,000 died of cholera at Scutari.
- A memorial stone was placed in Morwenstow by his parents
- read a true short story, dramatized using “poetic license”, about Thomas Edwin Baker’s short life and sacrifice: http://www.goodshortstories.net/sacrifice.html
