Philip Sanders was born on 1 May 1911, in Brampton, Cheshire. He attended Balliol College, Oxford, 1930-33, entering the RAF on Permanent Commission in March 1936, and was posted to 1 Squadron in October. By September 1939 he was at Hornchurch, where on 27 May 1940 he became commanding officer of 92 Squadron. He led the unit until 20 September, the day he made his final claim. His own aircraft was hit and he was soaked in petrol. On landing, he lit a cigarette, and his flying kit caught fire and one of his arms was seriously burned.  On recovery, he was posted to HQ 11 Group, on the night operations staff, and on June 1941 he took command of 264 Squadron, which he led until December. Ordered to Malta, he suffered appendicitis, going instead, following treatment, to USA early in 1942 to be a fighter test pilot at the US Experimental Station at Wright Field, Dayton Ohio. On returning to the UK he joined the HQ Staff of 84 Group, 2nd TAF, where he remained until 1945, being promoted Group Captain. He was then posted to Palestine as an airfield commander, revering to Wing Commander Rank in October 1946. He then served at Air Ministry, before becoming Air Attaché in Belgrade 1948-51. Back in the UK he became Wing Commander Flying at Coltishall and the in 1952, promoted again to Group Captain, commanded RAF Leeming. 1955-57 saw him at SHAPE, following which he was Air Attaché in Moscow, 1958-61. Promoted, he was at the Chief of Staff’s office as Air Commodore Operations, Fighter Command, until his retirement in April 1962.
