Last rites were held in the Presbyterian Church in Telluride, Saturday afternoon, August 25, at two o’clock for J. W. Blackburn who died on Monday of last week of a heart attack. The services were conducted by the Elks and Rev. Adair who gave a short but comforting sermon. Hymns were sung by Mrs Betty Ress and Mrs. Galen Thurman with Mrs. August Telk as accompanist.
Pall bearers were Alex Albin, Conrad Marchbanks, I. G. Warrick, Ernest Lill, Fred Egryand, D. A. O’Rourke. Burial was at Trinidad, Colorado, where two brothers and two sisters are buried.
James Walter Blackburn, son of T. W. and Mary E. Blackburn, was born at Miller, Missouri, September 14, 1882 and died August 20, 1945 at the age of 62 years, 11 months, and 6 days. When he was three years old, the family moved to a small ranch near Montrose, Colorado, where they resided for the next five years. From there, they moved to Ophir, Colorado, where Mr. Blackburn grew to manhood.
As a young man, he became interested in mining, an interest that he enjoyed throughout life. Early in his twenties he moved to Trinidad, Colorado and on May 20, 1912, he was married to Mabel Grace Jones of Folsom, New Mexico. To this union was born a son, Walter Everett and a daughter, Mabel Grace.
For a number of years the family resided on the Cimmaron River in New Mexico, where Mr. Blackburn engaged in the farming and stock raising industry. In 1935, the family moved to Telluride and Mr. Blackburn again took up mining which occupation he followed to the time of his death. Acquiring some properties in the Mt. Wilson district, he in apparent good health, has been opening up some ground. It was while he was at work there that he very suddenly passed away.
Walt Blackburn became a member of Telluride Lodge No. 1292 of the B.P.O. Elks on June 24th, 1943 and while a member for a comparative short time, was very much interested in his membership attending the Lodge functions whenever possible.
He is survived by wife, Mabel; a son, Everett of Nucia; a daughter Grace Evridge of Portifueneme, California; a brother Frank of Fort Garland, Colorado; a sister, Mrs. Carrie Tyson of Brighton, Colorado; one grandson, Marion Ray Evridge; several nieces and nephews and a large host of friends who mourn his passing.
