- 1853, from Kerry: “I have obtained copies of 2 deeds of land in Cartwright township held by [James Irvine Johnston’s] father James Elden and his wife Elizabeth. The first deed is for their 50 acre farm on Lot 10, Concession 3 Cartwright, which they bought in 1853 for 50 pounds and sold for 350 pounds (a 300 pound profit) in February 1854 to Andrew Dever, who was likely Elizabeth's brother (February 1854 was the same month James Elden first occupied Lot 8 in Concession 12 of Wallace Township). In the deed to Andrew Dever, James Elden is described as being a "merchant".
The second deed is for a quarter-acre parcel of land in the village of Blackstock in Cartwright Township which James Elden and Elizabeth bought in 1853 for 65 pounds. In 1856, they sold half of this parcel (one-eighth acre) for 275 pounds. Again, James Elden was described as a "merchant".

RESEARCH NOTES
- Another tree on ancestry [Trush by clawlis] lists him as James Elden Johnston, 14 Oct 1812 Ireland - 19 Apr 1901 Vancouver BC. Listed as marrying Elizabeth Dever (1813-1893) and having 11 children Jane (1836), John Carter (1837-1903), Richard (1839-1903), Elizabeth (1841), James Irvine (1843-1900), Annie Marie (1844-1908), William F (1848), Wesley Sandfield (1851-1928), Benjamin Burrows (1855-1908), Helen Creina (1856) and Vesta Victoria (1859-1891). James Elden Johnston listed as the son of Richard Johnston (1782-1868) and Christian (1780-1862).
Living in Cartwright township, Durham County, Ontario in the 1841 census
From tax assessments (Archives of Ontario): living in 1842 as James "Jonston" on Lot 11, Concession 4 (southwest part). 50 acres - all uncultivated. Asssessed 10 pounds; and the 1843-1846 tax assessments list him as James "Jonston" on Lot 10, Concession 3 (northwest part), 50 acres.

- based on this 1861 census data, James and Elizabeth would likely have been married 1836 or 1837, as first child was born in 1838. In Wilson Marriage Notices (Christian Guardian 1836-1849), found a possible marriage notice, published 5 Dec 1838 (but wife’s maiden name is different):
4 Nov, James Johnson & Elizabeth Keller, both of Ameliasburg. (Rev. C.R. Allison)
Or if they married later: published 6 January 1841 -
Yesterday in this City, James Johnston, of Flos, & Elizabeth Graham, of Oro. (Rev. Jonathan Scott)

- 1877 Toronto city directory - someone else is living at 7 Maitland: Denby Chas, com’l travel’r
- 1881 Toronto city directory, pg 514 (business directory for Merchantile agencie, pg 514):
Winters & Clarke (retail) 22 Adelaide e [Winters no longer associated with Johnston, but at same business address)

- Of interest: Irvine and Sarah A Johnston were the parents of a (different) James Irvine Johnston, born and baptised in 1862 - these parents would only be a match if our James was baptised as an adult, as he was likely born in 1843 or 1844. Because of the name, it seems likely they are related though. Certainly easy to confuse.

- found another Wesleyan Methodist baptism for John Irvine Johnstone, a probable descendant or younger relative (based on Irvine being in the name) - maybe Charles was Irvine’s son?:

- 1845: “John does not appear on the 1845 assessment for Cartwright Township and he may have left for Reach Township by then. John's first child, Robert Henry, was born in Reach Township on Oct. 27, 1847, so his first marriage to Mary Ann Rogers likely occurred about 1845.”

- 1857: tax assessment for Lot 14, Concession 10, Wallace Township, Perth County, Ontario

- 1858: tax assessment for Lot 13, Concession 10, Wallace Township, Perth County, Ontario

- 1872: marriage to Ann McQuillan,
“Johnston's hotel, Rothsay, Maryborough township, Wellington county, Ontario
John's birthplace given as County Fermanagh, Ireland and his parents' names given as Richard and "Christiann" Johnston. Note that John's [step] daughter Margaret Jane was also married at Johnston's hotel, Rothsay just days earlier on April 10, 1872.”

- 1881 from Kerry: “My great-great grandfather John Johnston (James Elden's brother) also seemed to be something of an entrepreneur and in the 1881 census for Palmerston his occupation is given as "merchant".”
Ca 1845 when John was 27, he first married Mary Ann ROGERS in Reach Twp, Ontario, Canada. Born in 1813 in Ireland or Canada. Mary Ann died in Palmerston, Ontario, Canada, on 16 Jul 1869; she was 56.
