RESEARCH NOTES
From other researchers:
- “John Carter Johnston, was born in Ireland according to the 1851 and 1861 ontario censuses. He married in 1873 in Drayton, Ontario and in his marriage record he gives his parent's names as James Johnston and Elizabeth "Dever" and indicates that he was born in Enniskillen [Ireland]. This is consistent with the Armstrong family history ... which says that the Johnstons came from Enniskillen.”
- Another tree on ancestry lists him as John Carter Johnston, born 27 Jan 1837 in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, died 10 Sep 1903 in Arthur Ontario. Married Catherine Eglestone (b 1849 Wellesley Waterloo Ontario) on 23 Oct 1873 Drayton Wellington ON,

- from wikipedia: Enniskillen is a town and civil parish in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is located almost exactly in the centre of the county between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne.
On 23 Oct 1873 when John Carter was 35, he married Catherine EGLESTON in Drayton, Wellington, Ontario, Canada. Born in Jan 1848 in Ontario, Canada.

From Kerry:
“The reason I think this is him is that in 1871 there was a lot of work available for carpenters in Wallace Township with the coming railway and specifically, with the building of the town of Palmerston. My great-grandfather Richard Johnston (James Irvine's first cousin) was shown in the tax collector's records for Palmerston in 1874 as being a carpenter (and again in 1875 in his marriage record). Also shown as carpenters in the 1874 tax collector's records of Palmerston were Robert Henry (Richard's brother) and Francis Evans, who was their first cousin as well as James Irvine's first cousin ....”

In 1898 the Klondike gold rush was in full swing, and having a doubly important impact on the 12 year old City of Vancouver. While successful prospectors were already returning with enough money to commission investment buildings (like Thomas Flack), Vancouver merchants were making money equipping the miners scambling to catch the tail end of the boom. William Kerfoot ran a clothing and furnishing business with his brother-in-law James Johnston (who had married William’s sister, Deborah, in Emerson Manitoba in 1881). They opened their store in G W Grant’s 1887 Wilson Block in 1890 or 1891 (when they appear in the street directory for the first time).
Like other city businesses they quickly cashed in on the massive upsurge in demand that accompanied the would-be miners, and this 1898 image shows a mule train about to head out loaded with supplies. In the background is Dougall House, built in 1890. Today this corner of the Woodwards development, designed by Henriquez Partners, is partly occupied by the Nesters Market supermarket, part of Jimmy Pattison’s retail empire, reintroducing a food store where Woodwards Food Floor used to be

Photo description: “We’re looking west up West Cordova Street from the junction with Abbott in 1889. Somebody at the studio of Bailey and Neelands took the photograph – both the Bailey and Neelands families moved west from the same small area of rural Ontario that a number of other successful Vancouver pioneers came from. The only building in common in both pictures is right at the end of the street and almost out of sight. That’s the Arlington Block, developed by Dr James Whetham in 1887, almost certainly using N S Hoffar as the architect. The pink building is the Panama Block, built in 1913. The block on the left is G W Grant’s first known project in Vancouver “commercial block for W B Wilson, 1887″. It was illustrated in an 1887 promotional publication “Vancouver – Pacific Coast Terminus of the CPR”.
There are several businesses that will be very successful on this side of the street including G E Trorey, whose business was later bought by Birks jewellers. (When Birks took over they also got the clock Trorey bought in Boston for $2,000 in 1905. When they moved their business to its new location they also moved the clock, which became the Birks Clock). Johnston and Kerfoot are there, who outfit many Klondike excursions in years to follow, and McClennan and McFeely, who will grow a trading empire in the city. Bailey Brothers, the photographers, are based about half way up the street, just before Kurtz and Co’s cigar factory. On the right is the Cosmopolitan Hotel, the Savoy Theatre (designed by William Blackmore), a Chinese company, Kwong Hang Chung Co (showing they weren’t all confined to Chinatown) and Rae’s Boot and Shoe Co, among others.
In between the two photographs Woodwards took over the entire south side of the street, and these days it’s the base of the 43-storey Woodwards W tower by Henriquez Partners with a mix of condo and non-market housing above retail, including Nester’s Market. Most of the right side is Henriquez’s redesigned Gastown Parkade, but the Cook Block from 1901 and the 1911 Runkle Block designed by G L T Sharp are both still standing.

The 1898 Klondike Gold Rush
Between the fall of 1897 and the spring of 1898, tens of thousands
of people caught gold fever and began preparations to head to the
Klondike goldfields on steamers leaving from San Francisco, Seattle
and Vancouver. Many Vancouver stores made fortunes selling goods
to Klondike gold dreamers who bought the required year’s supply of
food and equipment before departing on their adventurous trip on a
steamer for the far north.
“Pericles Pantages borrowed money from mistress
Kate Rockwell, afterwards known as “Klondike Kate,” and
started a music theatre in Dawson. Upon leaving the north, Pantages
opened two theatres in Vancouver that mushroomed into a chain of
70 vaudeville theatres across North America. He abandoned Kate,
and according to her, never repaid the loan.

- the store was also mentioned in at least a couple of fictional period novels, including a Sherlock Holmes mystery “The Yukon in Peril”, pg 80 [google books]

RESEARCH NOTES
- Name spelled Deborah Sophronia Kerfoot on daughter Daisy’s marriage registration Family sources originally spelled her middle name as Saphronia.

- BIRTH: family sources say Debra Safronia Kefoot was born in Manitoba, but the 1881 census has S. Deborh Johnston born in Ontario, as does her death registration, and her baptism. So Ontario it is!
- one source lists her birth in Thamesford ON - Thamesford is located on the western boundary of Oxford county, half way between London and Woodstock on highway 2 (county road 68) and between St. Marys and Ingersoll on highway 19.
BUT baptism record says she was born in Huntley Ontario
- from wikipedia: Huntley is an historic township originally part of Carleton County in eastern Ontario, Canada.
Huntley was located in the western part of the county, bordered to the northwest by Fitzroy Township, to the northeast by March Township, to the southwest by Ramsay Township and to the southeast by Goulbourn Township. It includes the communities of Carp, Corkery, Huntley, Manion Corners, and Westwood.
The township was established in 1841. The first settlers in the area were immigrants from Ireland in the early 19th century. In 1974, it was amalgamated with Torbolton and Fitzroy to form West Carleton. In 2001, West Carleton became part of the new city of Ottawa.

- Marriage (from another researcher): 27 January 1881, Emerson, Manitoba, Canada
- can’t find marriage in the Manitoba online index. Only 5 Kerfoots’ listed, none dated this early

- in 1887 Vancouver Business Directory, there was a Neelands & Co. on Hastings Street, commission merchants - I wonder if they were related to her mother’s family?
No individual names were listed in this directory except city council.

- DIED: in her 70's when Daisy Louise was about 12. (this is from family sources, but neither of these ages are correct if she died in 1941 at age 86 when Daisy was abt 53 ) [this is probably partly confused with Deborah’s husband who likely died in 1900 when he was 57 and Daisy was abt 12]

- 1911: where was she? Did she go down to California to be with her daughter for the birth of her grandchild Bill?

- from mother’s memorial on findagrave:

“W.S. Johnston is Dead
Prominent Publisher
Was Past Grand Master Oddfellows - Wrote History of Oddfellowship
Wesley Sandfield Johnston, past grand master of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, and president of the well known firm of W. S. Johnston and Company, died to-day at his residence, 558 College street. He has been in poor health for some time, and, after rising early, was making his way from his room when he collapsed as a result of heart failure.
Mr Johnston was born at Tooley's Corners (now Blackstock) in Durham county, 76 years ago. On Christmas Day, 1873, he married the daughter of John and Mrs. Thompson of Fergus. Mrs. Johnston died in November, 1924, less than a year after they celebrated their gold wedding anniversary. At the time of their marriage Mr. Johnston was a printer and was publisher of a weekly paper in Drayton. He founded the Arthur Enterprise in 1874 and the Port Elgin Times in 1878.
He was reeve of Port Elgin for eight years and in 1886 was elected warden of Bruce county. In 1890 he established the printing firm of W. S. Johnston and Company, with which he was connected, along with his two sons, Fred A. O., and E. Graham, at the time of his death.
Mr Johnston was connected with the I.O.O.F. for 44 years and held the highest offices in the order in Ontario. Besided being past grand master, he was past grand representative and past department commander with the rank of brigadier-general. He was connected with the board of trustees of the Oddfellows' Home for over 20 years. What is regarded as his greatest contribution to the order was his compilation of the history of Oddfellowship in this province from 1845 to 1923. It was published by the grand lodge in 1923.
At the time of his death he was president of the Orchard Beach cottages association. He was a lifelong Conservative.
Besides his two sons, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Harry Dodgson and Mrs C.N. Sinkins of this city.”
