- Samuel Dark b.16 Dec 1866 Newport Monmouthshire Wales 5th child of John Dark, M. Mariner and Sarah Ann Andrew. He became a Sailor and after the death of his father from Smallpox and the emigration of his mother and siblings to NSW Aust became the adopted son of his maternal Uncle, Samuel Davies, his namesake, a Newport Ships Carpenter. Sam, eventually following the death of this Uncle emigrated to Australia, arriving Brisbane, 26 May 1891. Following his family footsteps he arrived in Newcastle, NSW. In 1901 was a Fishmonger, Milk Vendor with a Freezing Works in Honeysuckle In 1912 he moved his business to Wharf Rd N'cle and in 1915 Dark's Cold and Ice Storage Ltd began. He provided facilities for the export of butter, bacon, cheese, fruit and vegetables. The Company sent Ice wrapped in saw dust and corn bags to places within NSW as far away as Lightning Ridge. Late 10,000 tons of ice was produced annually mainly for heavy industry, the cooling of steel. He married Isabel Violet Liddel b. 1874 in Morpeth NSW in 1907 in Waratah, Newcastle. They had one daughter Dorothy L, b. 1901 The Ice Works was used as a temporary morgue at times. He gave generously to Soldiers and Sailors from World War 1. A Plaque commerating his generousity in the Soldiers and Sailors Building was erected. He was known as "The Diggers Friend". He died 5 Sep 1921 and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery. Three windows in the Altar Section of Newcastle Cathedral are in memory of his life.

- 1921: Sam's Dark's Probate from the NSW Supreme Court Probate No. 109881 granted 25 November 1921. He is described as Ice Merchant of Newcastle died 5 September 1921. Dorothy received the sum of One Thousand Pounds and the remainder of the Estate of Twenty-six Thousand and Three Pounds Three Shillings and Fivepence was granted to Isabella Violet Liddell Dark of Ashfield, Widow.
