- As recounted by Mary Harriet (Hunt) Lane: “My mother's first cousin, Nellie (Andrew) Crosby, lived just up the road from us. She had a lovely flower garden and a very nice house. Every now and then she would have a dinner party and my mother and father would go. She would have some fancy hors d'oeuvres and would not serve dinner till quite late (and stylish). Most of the people there would have been working all day and were ready to eat as soon as they got there. My mother and father used to laugh quite a lot afterwards. I remember one time they were laughing.... Arthur Holland would go out to the kitchen and pull the kettle forward ready for tea, Nellie would go out after him and put it back on the back of the stove, then Mr. Holland would go out again and pull the kettle forward, she would go out and put it back again. He was giving her a very broad hint that he was more than ready to eat but it didn't hurry her a bit. She was going to keep to a fashionable dinner hour and make them do it too.”
