RESEARCH NOTES
- Another source says he died in Lamberhurst, but this may not be accurate. According the the MI’s of Lamberhurst - http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MI...t/MIsLamberhurst.htm - there are 2 William Boormans buried there
1) William boorman 1853, age 82 [b 1771] and wife Ruth - this is a different William in David’s file
2) William Boorman 1859 age 75 [b 1784]. Sarah Boorman 1851 age 83 [b 1768]. Left issue Elizabeth, Thomas & Mary NASH. Mary Nash PIERCE 1878 age 73 [b 1805] -
William married Martha FOSTER. Born ca 1765.

RESEARCH NOTES
- from http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MI...t/MIsLamberhurst.htm,
there is a Martha Foster MATHERS buried 1845 age 74 in Lamberhurst beside a /Charles William MATHERS, son of Charles and Martha Mathers of this parish, 31 Oct 1820 aged 17 Buried on her other side is William Boorman (1859, age 75). Ann left issue one daughter Ann. I’m not sure if or how this fit in with this Martha Foster who another researcher says married a William Boorman (I think different from the one buried in Lamberhurst).
They had one child:

- grave of John Hicks and Jane at East Peckham

RESEARCH NOTES
From other researchers:
- John Hicks was indeed the son of William Boorman (1722-1793) and Elizabeth Lynn (1731-1824). William was the son of Thomas Boorman (1684-1757) and Elizabeth Foster (1692-1767) and this Thomas was the elder brother of our William who was the son of Thomas Boorman (1666-1698) and Elizabeth Hayward (1655-1731). This branch of the family were wealthy and there are loads of Boorman and related family graves both inside and outside East Peckham church.

- John Hicks Boorman was baptised at East Grinstead 12 May 1765, married Jane Martyr and died 17 Oct 1832. John & Jane are buried together in a very elaborate tomb at East Peckham, Kent
- Not to be confused with the John Boorman, son of William Boorman and Ann Weller, who is close in age.

- “I have six children for John and Jane: Elizabeth (East Grinstead) C1793, Thomas Martyr (East Grinstead) C1795, Jane (East Grinstead) C1798, Margaret (Margaretta) (Lamberhurst) C1803, Ann (Lamberhurst) C1805, and Sarah (Lamberhurst) C1809. I have followed the lines of 5 out of the 6 - Thomas Martyr having died an infant. Margaretta  did marry Thomas Henham, son of Iden Henham, but she died a few days before her 46th birthday and is buried inside East Peckham church in the vault of her father in law.”

- in the “KIng and Henham” book published 1899, Jno. HIcks Boorman was the son of William Boorman of Lamberhurst, Sussex whose ancestor came from Holland c1620. Two other siblings listsed [previously not known]: Thomas Hugh Boorman of East Peckham, and William Boorman, died at Lamberhurst.

- Is this their first child (mother’s name not listed)?

“Thomas Hugh Boorman was the great grandson of Thomas Boorman and Elizabeth Hayward, the 7 great grandparents of John Stanley Boorman (b. 1951), who is both a 10th cousin once removed 10C1R) and 10th cousin twice removed (10C2R) of Craig Lee Boorman Sr. John Stanley Boorman resides near Weston super Mare in Somerset County, England. He was born in Kent County, England. His friend, David Arthur Boorman (from a different Boorman ancestral line), who resides in Woking, Surrey, England (near London), sent Craig L. Boorman Sr. the "Grant of Arms" (Coat of Arms) given to Thomas Hugh Boorman on 17 September 1829. Thomas Hugh chose to show as his motto: "SPES MEA IN DEO" (English translation: My hope is in God). Both John Stanley Boorman and David Arthur Boorman have done a great deal of family history work for Boorman ancestral lines in England.”

- Regarding Grant of Arms / Coat of Arms to Boorman and Martyr, from the College of Arms [authorizing body] 2012:
1. “In 1829 arms and crest were granted to Thomas Hugh Boorman of East Peckham, Kent, esquire, to be borne by all male-line descendants of the grantee’s deceased father William Boorman of Lamberhurst, Sussex, gentleman.  Thomas had married Margaret, eldest daughter and coheir of Thomas Martyr of East Peckham, esquire, deceased, and arms for Martyr were granted at the same time as the Boorman arms and crest: Per pale Gules and Azure three fusils in fess Argent each charged with a rose Gules barbed and seeded proper.  These arms were to be borne by Margaret [Martyr], and also by her sisters Anne [Martyr], wife of Richard Wild of Canterbury, Kent, and Jane [Martyr] , wife of John Hicks Boorman of Brenchley, Kent, and were to pass to the descendants of the three women under the laws of arms [College of Arms ms Grants 37, 416].  These laws dictate that the male-line descendants of Thomas and Margaret Boorman would bear a quarterly shield, the arms of Boorman in the first and fourth quarters, and those of Martyr in the second and third quarters.  If Richard Wild was himself entitled to arms, his male-line descendants by Anne Martyr would use a shield depicting the arms of Wild quartering those of Martyr; and if John Hicks Boorman was entitled to arms, his male-line descendants by Jane Martyr would bear the arms of Boorman quartering those of Martyr.  It seems likely that the grant of arms refers to two brothers, Thomas Hugh Boorman and John Hicks Boorman, who married two sisters, Margaret Martyr and Jane Martyr; but I cannot be certain, as I have not carried out any further work on this family.”

2. “As mentioned, … the arms blazoned in point 2 - Per pale Gules and Azure three fusils in fess Argent each charged with a rose Gules barbed and seeded proper - were those granted for Martyr, to be borne by Margaret, Anne and Jane, daughters of the late Thomas Martyr. According to the conventions of heraldry, the paternal arms of a married woman can be used only in conjunction with those of her husband. The arms granted to Thomas Hugh Boorman and John Hicks Boorman were Argent on a bend engrailed Gules between two hop-vines with poles proper growing out of mounts Vert three stag's heads caboshed Or; and crest, Upon a wreath of the colours [Argent and Gules] A bee volant between two oak branches fructed proper ['proper' in heraldry indicating that an object is depicted in its natural real-life colours]. The motto shown was 'Spes mea in Deo' ('My hope is in God') [College of Arms ms Grants 37, 416]. I have not investigated the entitlement to arms of Richard Wild, husband of the third Martyr sister.”

- another researcher adds about this coat of arms: “this is not any indication of any great pedigree. Thomas Hugh was a Draper/shopkeeper, free mason, who wanted to enhance his status. The motto he attached is a regular one for freemasons.”

- This Thomas Hugh Boorman seems to have had no children. But his brother William had children and descendants to modern day.
Thomas Hugh married Margaret MARTYR, daughter of Thomas MARTYR. Born ca 1768.

- 1829 granting of arms: Margaret, eldest daughter and coheir of Thomas Martyr of East Peckham, esquire, deceased; Margaret who had married Thomas Hugh Boorman of East Peckham Kent, esquire

The Martyr and Boorman Coats of Arms were different:
Arms for Martyr were granted at the same time as the Boorman arms and crest: Per pale Gules and Azure three fusils in fess Argent each charged with a rose Gules barbed and seeded proper.
