- after marriage in 1802, lived first in Baltimore and then in Norfolk, along with her small brother George (age 4) and sister Esther (age 10).

- Son of Mary Ann Hancock (d 1800) of Princess Anne County, Virginia, and Rev. William Selden (1741-1783), an Episcpal minister at Hampton Virginia who was ordained by the Bishop of London on 10 Mar 1771.
- William Boswell Selden was a very prominent physician. He was educated at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, and at Edinburgh Scotland, and settled in Norfolk Virginia in 1798. His first home was on Catherine Street, and about 1805 he built a country home which he named “Shelden’s Point” on the Elizabeth River, now the soiuthwest corner of Freemason and Botetourt Streets. Though originally suburban, it is now in the commercial part of the city and adjoins the piers of ocean-going vessels. This home was still occupied by descendants of the family in 1941.

- Robert’s first son [William] born 1783, the year of American independence.
- William worked with his father in Baltimore in the soap and candle business. When his father moved north in 1802, William stayed with the business in Baltimore.
- 1807: in business for himself in New York City and helped his father pay off the debts from his lawsuit. . Willliam rented a small farm in Charlton Saratoga NY in his name for his family to save the family further loss.
- William was president of the Colgate Company for 51 years when he passed the reigns over to his son Samuel.

Mary GILBERT in New York City, New York, USA.
Born on 25 Dec 1788 in London, England. Mary died in 22 East 23rd Street, New York City, NY, USA, on 5 Mar 1855; she was 66. Buried abt 1855 in Lot 2150, Greenwood Cemetery, New York, USA.
- Mary was the English born daughter of Edward Gilbert, who came to America in 1796 when Mary was 8 years old. The Gilberts had settled near Middletown NY adjoining the famr at Andes where William’s father eventually settled. Her brother Edward Gilbert the younger, had a son Colgate Gilbert who married Martha Colgate Austen, “Patty”. Several sons of another brother Joshua Gilbert, were active in the Colgate Starch Works, among whom was John Gilbert.

Born on 28 Dec 1784 in Hollingbourne, Kent, England. Maria died in 42 East 19th Street, New York City, NY, USA, on 9 Feb 1866; she was 81. Buried abt 1866 in Lot 2150-7Greenwood Cemetery, New York, USA.

- 1795: age 11, Immigrated with parents and family from England to Baltimore, Maryland
- 1802: age 19 move north with family
- 1806: age 22 went to New York City to find employment to help family income, and worked in a boarding house belonging to her Aunt Mary Colgate Boorman and lived with her brother William in Dutch Street, keeping house and later taking care of youngest brother Charles. She joined the Baptist Church along with William and became devout.
- She was in NY for 4 years before moving to Dehli to join her family. She had a love of home, family, knowledge and righeousness.
- never married, no descendants
- after her father died, she lived with her mother and sister Lydia at 8 Dutch Street. After 1846: 42 East 19th Street along with cousins Charlotte and Elizabeth Pine, also unmarried, who conducted a very successful preparatory school at that address.
- In later years she was cared for by her nephew Stephen Bowles Colgate.
Hannah COLGATE (Sarah BOWLES5, Sarah BOORMAN4, William3, Thomas2, William1).
Born on 1 Feb 1787 in Hollingbourne, Kent, England. Hannah died in Filston Farm, Sevenoaks, Kent, England, on 23 Mar 1788; she was 1. Buried abt 1788 in Bessels Green Baptist Church, Sevenoaks, Kent, England.

Bowles COLGATE (Sarah BOWLES5, Sarah BOORMAN4, William3, Thomas2, William1) .
Born on 14 Jan 1789 in Filston Farm, Sevenoaks, Kent, England. Bowles died in 7 Dutch Street, New York City, NY, USA, on 26 Aug 1845; he was 56. Buried on 24 Feb 1853 in Lot 6324, Greenwood Cemetery, New York, USA.

- 1795: age 6 when he immigrated to Baltimore with family.
- 1805: age 16, went with his parent to New York City to work as assistant to a Mr Smith, merchant for a short time
- Bowles apprenticed with his brother William in NY, and by 1807 returned to live with his family in Charlton NY to help on the farm.
- 1808, age 19, took over responsibility for the farm while his father was in debtors prison. Later he helped clear the wilderness when the family moved to undeveloped property in Delhi. During winters he worked with his brother William in the soap and candle business in New York City
- He was a serious and industrious individual of few but well spoken words, virtuous and caring of his parents and family. He was a great reader.
- 1812: married Laurina Tonswend, built his own log cabin and began farming his own land in Delhi. His first 2 children died as infants before they could be named.
- 1813: moved to NY City and joined his brother William, as junior partner of Willilam Colgate & Co, soap and candle. Bowles and his wife lived at #9, and later #8 Dutch Street until his death in 1845. All their children were born on Dutch Street.
- Bowles was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department, 1817-1833.
- About 1840, portraits were painted of Bowles and his his wife by Samuel WAwldo, an uncle of George Waldo Abbe (son-in-law).
- He was first buried in New Jersey, and on Feb 24 1853 removed to Greenwood Cemetery NY Lot 6324

- Daughter of Gilbert and Abigail Mead Townsend of Middletown, NY and granddaughter of John and Jemima Travis Townsend of Dutchess County NY.
- After her husband’s death in 1845 she moved from Dutch Street to 59 East 16th Street NY where she lived until her death

Born on 6 Jan 1791 in Filston Farm, Sevenoaks, Kent, England. Esther died on 16 Aug 1882; she was 91. Buried abt 1882 in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia, USA.
- 1795: age 3, immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland with family
- 1802: age 11, she was taken to Norfolk Virginia to live with her newly married sister Charlotte Selden until her marriage to Jacob Klein in 1811
- They lived in Norfolk, Virginia, and in Baltimore Maryland, where they were in 1902 with 2 daughters Susan Selden Klein and Mary Boorman Klein
- 1882: died in the home of her daughter, Louisa Klein Dunn
On 30 Jul 1811 when Esther was 20, she married Jacob KLEIN in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Born on 9 Feb 1777 in Albany, New York, USA. Jacob died in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in 1833; he was 55. Buried abt 1833 in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia, USA.
- Described by his future brother-in-law Dr William Boswell Seldon:
“Mr. Klein has resided among us five or six years; during that time he has conducted himself with much propriety and his character stands fair with his friends. He is engaged in various mercantile pursuits, in the smsall way, and appears to be frugal and industrious and has talents well suited to business. With this view of his character there is reason to hope our sister will do well. He came from New York to this place with a store of dry goods; that business has since declined. His father is a farmer somewhere on the North River.”

Born on 10 Mar 1793 in Filston Farm, Shoreham, Sevenoaks, Kent, England. Lydia died in 42 East 19th Street, New York City, NY, USA, on 12 May 1862; she was 69. Buried abt 1862 in Lot 2150-7, Greenwood Cemetery, New York, USA.
- 1795: age 2 when immigrated with family to America
- 1809: age 16, Lydia was a good girl of sweet temper, very industrious and considered a back woods girl, quite accomplished
- Helped in parent’s household in Delhi: spinning, weaving, letter-writing; rarely left home except occasional visit to NY City. When her brother William’s children were small, she often brought them from NY City to the Delhi farm for visits.
- Lydia Colgate never married. Family tradition states that she once had an offer of marriage but she considered it wrong to be married before her older sister Maria, so broke the engagement.
- 1826: moved to Dutch Street, NY city with her mother and sister Maria after her father’s death, and kept house.
- 1846: moved with them to 42 East 19th Street; lived there until her death in 1862.
John COLGATE IV (Sarah BOWLES5, Sarah BOORMAN4, William3, Thomas2, William1).
Born on 23 Aug 1795 in Westwood, Deer Creek, Darlington, Hartford, Maryland, USA. John died in 79 Warren Street, New York City, NY, USA, on 18 Feb 1842; he was 46. Buried abt 1842 in Harsimus Cemeter, Jersey City, New Jersey, USA.

- 1795: born just 5 months after his parents left England.
- Age 7 when father left BAltimore to go north.
- 1808: After family moved to Delhi. John and brother George were alternately send to NY City in winter months to apprentice his brother Will in the soap and candle business. When not in NY City, he worked for his father on the farm and studied in the evenings.
- Educated at home by his parents
- 1817: married and continued living in Delhi for several years working on his own farm
- 1820: moved to 57 Warren Street New York City, later moving to 79 Warren Street, and went into the tallow chandler business.
- 1821: formed a business partnership with his brother, of “George and John Colgate” tallow chandlers, at 256 Greenwich Street - successfull until they both died in 1842
- John was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department from 1820-1829
- buried in Grave 60, Row 57, southeast in Harsimus Cemetery, Jersey City NJ
On 8 Oct 1817 when John was 22, he married Abigail JESSUP in Colchester, Delaware, New York, USA. Born on 14 Feb 1800. Abigail died on 28 Nov 1843; she was 43. Buried abt 1843 in Harsimus Cemeter, Jersey City, New Jersey, USA.

- Charles, the youngest son, was sent to a boarding school in Catskill
- 1809: age 4, sent to his brother William in NY City, cared for by sister Maria untill 1811 when William married and Maria returned to Delhi.
- 1811: Charles sent to boarding school in Rhinebeck NY to live with a family named Scott
- Apprenticed in brother William’s soap and candle business in New York City.
- Charles was a handsome boy, his mother wanted to give him every advantage.
- 1813: on a visit home to Delhi, Charles cut his hand with a sickle which cost him the use of that hand for the remainder of his life.
- age 18: opend a atallow chandler business at 26 Catherine Street for 2 years
- 1827: Married Sarah Stokes by Rev. Spencer H. Cone - 7 children listed.
- 1828: wnet into the dystuffs business, and 6 years later took his nephew Robert Colgate into the business. The following year they combined with George P Pollen and continued the business at 177 Water Street.
- 1837: he became a broker; his business located at 67 Wall Street and later his firm was known as Charles Colgate and Company, brokers at 72 Wall Street. He remained in this business until his death.
- Charles was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department.
- His residents were 8 Dutch Street, then 74 Christopher Street, then 84 East 27th Street. At death he lived in Brooklyn, NY.
On 17 Jan 1827 when Charles was 21, he married Sarah STOKES. Born on 14 Sep 1805. Sarah died on 15 Nov 1872; she was 67. Buried abt 1872 in Lot 3361, Greenwood Cemetery, New York, USA.
