John Townsend Compton(1799-1852)
John matriculated at St John`s College, Oxford,in 1816 but what he did next regarding this we do not know. He married and, in the Census of 1851, is described as "Land proprietor" having bought Wedhampton House in 1843.
He married Maria Harris Hallilay in 1837 of Wedhampton.Maria was a daughter of Richard Hallilay and his wife Sarah Goddard. Hallilay came from Wakefield,Yorkshire. He was a Purser of His Majesty`s Fleet and Secretary to Admirals Peyton,Luttridge and Rowley during a period of fifty years. He died in 1832.His wife,Sarah, was a daughter of the Reverend Edward Goddard of Clyffe Pypard. The goddards had been priests and Lords of the Manor there for generations.
Two sons were born in Wedhampton House.Daniel Goddard was born in 1838 and William in 1840. William died in 1852 as did his father.Windows commemorating them are found in the church of St Michael and All Angels in Urchfont.
This church is full of Comptoniana.A number of meorial tablets adorn the walls with the coat-of-arms supposedly theirs. There are the Victorian windows of doubtful yet quiet taste. The large board near the door sets out the Eliza Compton Trust of one thousand pounds the gradually decreasing interest of which was to go to the poor. And there is John T.Compton`s churchwarden`s chest.”
In 1837 when John Townsend was 20, he married Maria Harris HALLILAY, daughter of Richard HALLILAY (1756-1832) & Sarah (1757-1840). Born in 1799 in of Wedhampton. Maria Harris died in Urchfont, Wiltshire, England, in 1876; she was 77. Buried on 12 Nov 1876 in Urchfont, Wiltshire, England.
