Daniel went to the rather new Marlborough College in 1848 and left in 1856.He was in B1 House.Awarded and Exhibition to Exeter College,Oxford, he gained his BA in 1861 and his MA in 1864.He entered Wells Theological College in 1861 and was ordained Deacon in 1862 and Priest in 1983 in the Dioceses of Bath and Wells.Daniel was curate of South Petherton in Somerset from 1862 to 1863,and then became Vicar of Wroxton in Oxfordshire. In 1874 he was appointed Rector of Barnsley in Gloucestershire (famous for the garden created by the late Mrs Rosemary Verey) where he remained until 1901.He was also Rural Dean of Fairford 1894-1901.He died in 1930 at the age of 92 in Southbourne,Bournemouth. He was one of the very old Comptons.
HIS MARRIAGE
In 1869 Daniel married Louisa Mary Waller, daughter of the Reverend Ernest Adolphus Waller, second son of Sir Jonathan Wathen Waller, Bt.The Wallers were an ancient family claiming descent from Alured de Waller of Newark, Nottinghamshire. He must have been familiar with the castle in its better days.
The Comptons appear in the 1881 Census at Barnsley with their first two children,Mary Goddard and John Henry. They had a governess,Swanhild W.Ettmaller, who came from Zurich. Later William Edmund and Rose Waller were born.
John Henry, born in 1875,also went to Marlborough College being in B3 House from 1888 to 1893.He was at Trinity College,Oxford, but we know nothing else except that he died in 1928 at Southbourne.
At some time Louisa died but the year and place of burial remain a mystery. We have not found Daniel`s grave either.William Edmund was in the Navy,as mentioned as "RN"on a useful old family tree. Both he and Mary survived their father, Rose presumably did not as she is not mentioned in the will of 1928.Daniel left £12,189,15s.11d. a lot anyway in those days, especially for a clergyman. His executors were his daughter Mary and his cousins the Reverend Edward Hungerford Goddard of Clyffe Pypard and (?Rev)Charles Cyril Bradford of the Rectory Adderbury.
Apart from money he left a lot of silver objects given by parishioners on leaving parishes and on hisSilver Wedding. One was a cup called the "Three Bachelors` Cup" which had belong to his father John T.Compton.There were also freehold messuages and land in Urchfont.
Daniel loved music, and had a small chamber built in Barnsley church for a restored 18th century organ by Samuel Green. He paid out of his own pocket.
POSTSCRIPT
