From files left to the Nebraska Diocese by Rev Ernest J Secker in his will dated 1976:
- He had a sister, Mrs. James Doverty, at 96 Prince Thorpe Road, ipswich, Suffolk, England.
- His brother was John W. Secker, Sea View Clarence, Corindi Beach, Corindi, New South Wales, Austrialia.
- He received a prayer book from the Battle of Somme, sent to him in Russel, Manitoba, by Dr. Clarke Dale Velomay (very difficult to read).
From the Nebraska Diocese:
- I show Father Secker at St. Mark’s, 1923, and from Rupertsland, Canada.  On that same list, I’ve written that he went to Trinity Church in Norfolk in 1945.
[Rupert’s Land was the historial name given to much of Canada’s lands west of Upper and Lower Canada and the Maritimes as far as the Rocky mountains. It was bought from the Hudson’s Bay Compan 3 years after confederation - see http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/ruperts-land/ ]

RESEARCH NOTES:
- if 1930 US census records are accurate, Ernest was quite a bit younger than Alice.
- Ernest Secker likely still in England in 1911.
- Family sources said he was born in England, and he was a Reverend (clergy). He and Alice [or perhaps just Alice] used to travel from their home in the USA (Omaha) to visit her relatives in PEI. They may also have lived in Winnipeg.

- One source says he immigrated in Jun 1910 to Quebec aboard SS Tunisian - a steam ship built in 1900 and operated by the Allan Line. 1914-1918 troopship, 1917 transferred to Canadian Pacific; 1922 renamed Marburn; 1928 scrapped. 10,576 tons

“Capt. (Rev.) A. E. Andrew, son of Mr. William Andrew of North St. Eleanors, has been awarded the Military Cross after having been recommended twice for this coveted honor. Capt. Andrews was Rector at Pictou when the war began. He enlisted first for the fighting ranks, taking the officers’ training course and qualifying for the Heavy Siege Battery. He was given a commission, and went overseas as Lieutenant with 100 men, which he and Lieut. Gunn recruited for the Ammunition Column. He transferred overseas to the Chaplain service of the Royal Canadians, with the honorary rank of Captain. Since then he has been closely associated with the men in the trenches rendering valuable service wherever duty called regardless of danger. Not only as Chaplain has Capt. Andrew served but in emergency cases he has acted as stretcher bearer, one of the most dangerous postss on the field of battle.”

“Island Clergyman Gets the M.C.
“Capt. (Rev.) A. E. Andrew, rector of the Anglican Church in Pictou who went overseas as Chaplain with the Nova Scotia Highlanders, has been awarded the Military Cross. Rev. Mr. Andrews is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willliam Andrews of St. Eleanors, and before his ordination was on the teaching staff of St Peter’s Boys School in Charlottetown. He is a brother of Nursing Sister Andrew, at present in the city. Particulars as to how Captain Andrew won this honor are contained in a letter from Pte Dan Campbell of the R.C.R. to his mother Mrs. Alex Campbell of Central Cariboo NS who wrote:
‘Our Chaplain, Rev. A.E. Andrew, has been decorated with the Military Cross. He did well earn it. He went “over the top” and tended the wounded under heavy shell and machine-gun fire. While dressing one fellow he (the wounded one) was struck three times with machine-gun bullets It was at Cambrai he did the good work. When I got there, - for it was at Cambrai I joined them Mr. Andrews was with us We got orders to go over the tp. When we went about a hundred yards every machine gun the Germans had was turned loose on us. An officer told Mr. Andrew that it was no place for him but he said: “If the men can go I can.” However, we did not get over that day, and we lost twelve men out of forty. Next morning our artillery pounded the hill for two hours and two other battallions succeeded in capturing the position.’ ’”

“Many friends throughout the diocese of Nova Scotia will be interested to learn that the Rev. A. E. Andrew, formerly rector of Pictou, and rural dean of Amherst, has been presented by King George with the Military Cross which he won at Cambrai. Captain Andrew has been recommended twice for this coveted decoration. While the news will gratify his friends, it will not susrprise them - they were confident from their knowledge of the quality of his manhood, that he would acquit himself with distinction in the great struggle. He enlisted first as a combatant, having failed to secure a chaplaincy, going overseas as lieutenant with 100 men whom he and Lieutenant Gunn recruited for the ammunition column. “Celebrates Anniversary of Ordination
“On Sunday, December 22, Canon A.E. Andrew celebrates the seixy-second anniversary of his ordination. He is eighty-six years of age.
“”The Canon,” as he is affectionately know to so many in the town and district, became a Deacon in the old St. Luke’s Cathedral, in Halifax, with Bishop Frederick Courtney officiating at the ceremony and, one year later, almost to the day, became a Priest in the same Cathedral.
“His activities in furthering God’s work took him first to St. Peter’s Cathedral, in Charlottetown, and he celebrated his first Eucharist at a church in Glace Bay. For three years he was Curate in charge of the parishes of Glace Bay, Reserve and Dominion and moved on to Bayfield, in Antigonish County, where he remained until 1908. The next eight years were spent in Pictou and it was here that he enlisted and went overseas as a gunner lieutenant in charge of a Section Ammunition Column. He served in England for the remaining two years of he war, due to an injury *, and when he returned to Canada, finally resumed his calling at Brooklyn, Hants Co., and from there went to Pictou, retring from the service of the Church in 1936 due to ill health. After three years in Cape Breton he returned to Windsor where he has made his home every since.
“A strong leader in the Priesthood, Canon Andrew several times represented this Province at General Synod of Canada gatherings and recalls that, during his periods as delegate, there were important changes made such as the introduction of a new Prayer Book and responsibility for general pension plans by the Synod. Another of his deep interests has always been Boy Scouts and Brownie movements and in his various churches, this was a “must” phase in Sunday School work.
“Retired now, even at his advanced age, the Canon is an ardent gardiner and spends most of his leisure time with his books. His many friends will wish for him many more years of quiet happiness.”

When they visited St Eleanors they brought only their daughter Margaret who had started to grow taller and they had sewn her some new clothes, so Harriet was quite happy to inherit the cast offs as they were different from the local ones. Harriet remembers baking lots of jelly rolls for the company and picnics.

- ANCESTRY: Richard Raimes Hunt ... in my research on the Hunt line, Isabella Fortune, Richard Raimes maternal grandmother had a sister Jessie who married a Richard Raimes. For reference:
http://www.lindsayandgilmour.co.uk/wp-content/uplo...Clark-and-Co-Ltd.pdf
- this document includes a portrait of Richard Raimes (1797-1888). Richard and his older brother John, (who founded the Raimes Clark pharmaceutical company in Edinburgh in 1816) “... came from an old Yorshire family, whose ancestry can be traced all the way back to the 11th century, when a Rames was awarded land and a castle for their role in the Norman conquest. Richard and John’s family came from the town of Wheldrake in North Yorshire, where the family had been farming land for over 300 years.”
“The Raimes brothers looked within their own family to fill management positions. George and Thomas Blanshard, nephews of John and Richard, were brought into the firm, contributing a great deal to its devcelopment. George Blanshard was qualified as a pharmacist and he and Richard Raimes both served in senior positions in the North British Pharmaceutical Society, as President and Chair respectively.”
“John Raimes never married. The family connection continued through Richard’s sons, John Fortune Raimes and Richard Raimes Jr. The both became partners and ultimately took over the running of the firm. When Thomas Blanshard died in 1882, the company name then reverted to Raimes & Co. Richard Raimes retired aged 71 and went on to live to the ripe old age of 90, reportedly never having had a serioius illness unti the last week of his life. He was ill for just one day before he died”
“Unfortunately, Richard’s sons did not enjoy the same good health as their father. John Fortune Raimes was subject to fainting fits and collapsed and died on the steps of Smith’s Place House in 1887 at the age of just 37. His brother Richard then [in 1888] took into partnership a former apprentice and traveller for the firm, Richard Clark, to help run the business. Richard Raimes survived only another three years, dying of pleurisy in 1891 at the age of 40.”...
“Richard Clark ... was twice married, the second time marrying the widow of Richard Raimes, his former business partner.”
“... a collection of letters between John Fortune Raimes’s widow Fanny, her daughter Helena (Nelly), and the firm’s solicitors, Mr Robertson and his son, young “Mr Bobby”, or “Groggy” as Helena was prone to call him. Fanny and Nelly obviouisly viewed the Robertsons as freinds and advisors, as well as “men of business”. The sent regular chatty letters, asking not just for funds, but for advice and help in dealing with servants and tradesment. The letters, which span four decades and both world wars, contain intriguing glimpses of a changing world. Fanny and Nelly were initially wealthy women, having inherited a large part of the Raimes fortune, but a stime wore on this rapidly diminished ... after 2 generations the money was gone.”
“The 1851 census confirms that Smith’s Place House was occupied by John Raimes, 69 years old, registered as a Wholesale Druggist. Lilving with him were his niece Ann Jackson, his nephew William Blanshard, two domestic servants and a female visitor (married).”
“The 1861 census tells us that Thomas Blanshard was now the head of Smith’s Place House, aged 41, and registered as a Wholesale Druggist. He was living with his unmarried sister, Mary Blanshard, who was 42, and two domestic servants. It also registers 16 rooms with one or more windows.”

- In a 19 February 1919 reference about her brother Rev. Andrew, they make mention that his sister is a Nursing Sister in this city (Charlottetown). I am assuming that if she is a nursing sister and was not in the CEF that she was in the home establishment working in a military hospital. She must have been working in The Rena MacLean Memorial Hospital, a soldiers convalescent hospital in Charlottetown next to the Lt.Gov. house. The hospital was called after PEIsland Nursing Sister Rena MacLean who died in the sinking of the Llandovery Castle.

- According to her nephew Alan: Mabel was a nurse and that's [likely?] how she met Major Fred May - Major Fred was injured when he was buried alive by a shell at Ypres and was dug out by his men.  Alan doesn't know where he was hospitalized.  [perhaps he had to convalesce back home in a Charlottetown hospital?].

- 1920: Her father William died July 29. Fred May’s mother Henrietta died 14 Dec.

- 1921: Mabel married Fred May; MARRIAGE: C. de W. White. Witnesses Thomas W. May, Horace J. Andrew
As published in the Charlottetown Guardian July 16/21:
“MAY-ANDREW NUPTIALS
At an early hour on the 14th, inst., at St John Anglican Church St Eleanors, PEI, the marriage took place of Major Frederick F May, only son of the late Robert and Henriette F May of Charlottetown, to Miss Mabel H Andrew, youngest daughter of the late William and Mrs. Andrew of North St Eleanors. Owing to recent bereavement in the families of both bride and bridegroom, only the immediate relatives and friends were present at the ceremony. The church was prettily decorated with flowers by friends of the bride, who is a graduate nurse of the PEI Hospital. The bride looked charming in a navy blue travelling dress with a hat to match and carried a bouquet of Ophelia roses, while the groom wore the service uniform of his old Overseas Battalion, “the Fighting 26th”, the NB and PEI unit. The wedding was performed by Rural Dean White, rector of Summerside and St Eleanors. and there were no attendants.
After the ceremony Major and Mrs. May left for a wedding trip to the mainland. On their return they will reside in St Eleanors. Numerous presents were received by the bride from her many friends. The Guardian joins in happiest congratulations.

- According to the overview of the 26th New Brunswick Battalion was part of the Canadian Second Division created Oct 1914, recruited starting in November etc, sailed for Britain aboard the Caledonia steamship on 13 Jun 2015. They trained in Kent England and were reviewed by the King of England on 2 Sep 1915 at Beachborough Park near the camp grounds. Camp was broken Sep 13, and they crossed from Folkestone, landing at Boulogne Sep 14. Trained from Pont-aux-Birque to Wisernes. Marched to Renescure then to Bailleuil, 5 miles back from firing line. 26th Btn first located at Kemmel-Vierstadt near Poperinghe on the right hand side of this spur in the German line, began fighting in trenches Sep 21 2015. [was this sthe Battle of Loos?]
[Poperinge is a municipality in West Flanders, Belgium to the west of Ypres. Used as a gateway to the battlefields of the northern Ypres Salient, and important rail and road hub for military traffic behind the front lines - http://www.greatwar.co.uk/ypres-salient/town-poperinge.htm]

“Major May’s Residence Burned to the Ground
The many friends of Major and Mrs. Fred M. May will be sorry to of the loss by fire of their beautiful new residence, almost completed, at St. Eleanors. The fire, the origin of which is unknown was first seen by neighbors about five o’clock yesterday morning and although willing hands did all they could the fire gained such headway that it was beyond control before any effective means could be adopted. The building was almost ready for occupancy, the plumbers and painters putting in the finishing touches. It is understood that there was but a small amount of insurance on the building.”

The Summerside Branch of the Canadian Legion held a very enjoyable supper in the armoury on Thursday evening. A number of members were present from the country. After the usual business had been dealt with and the supper enjoyed, Major May gave an interesting talk on his experiences in the first battle in which the original men of the 26th Battalion of New Brunswick, took part on October 13th, 1916[5?] in the Great War. Major May was one of the original officers of that Battalion Other gentlemen pressed the question of preparing similar papers for reading at subsequent meetings. Rembrance Day in Kensington
... Address by Major May.
Taking for his subject “The Day we Celebrate and our public and private duty in regard to same” Major May began by telling a vivid story of something that happened during the retreat of the French at the first battle of the Morne: A portion of the rear guard found itself in a valley seeing the Germans taking command of a little farm house opposite to their position, they trained the sight of a gun on this house and the command was given to fire; the house was instantly blown to pieces. Someone noticing the paleness of the Sergeant gun layer the one who had fired the gun asked him “what is the matter, are you ill?” and his replay was - “No! but that was my house and my home, and I do not know the fate of my wife or children or whether they were removed from here or not:”
Knowing the possibility of his dear ones being in their home, he had trained the gun on the house and fired.
“That was one of the many untold ways in which duty was met by men who sacrificed all.
Self Sacrifice was the key note of those who served. How do you and I meet on public duty as regards our position as Canadians?
As Canadians this morning gathered here to remem ber the sacrifice of over 60,000 other Canadians, how do we meet the challenge flung from their dying hands to us? They gave their lives that we might live in peace in Canada. Are we, who profit by their sacrifice taking up the torch and doing our duty to the best that is us lies as public spirited citizens of this Canada?
Even closer than our public duty is a private duty we owe them. Looking at the rows of children here today, I ask you, what is your God-given duty to them and to those who follow them? You as parents, guardians and friends give them home and loving care, is their any thing else? A great deal more. You can raise a permanent memorial - not a thing of wood or stone - to those who remained in Flanders field, to those who died to save your freedom. You can begin today the foundations of a memorial that will last for all eternity. A memorial to those gone before and a lasting gift to posterity. Is the great gift of Self-Control. Intemperance is a great evil in our fair land, greater even than the horrors of war.
I tell you, “Laul has slain his thousands, but David his tens of thousands” through lack of self control. Read an article in MacLean’s Magazine for Oct. 15th by a leading medical authority. Today in a humble way, I warn you, in the name of the 60,000 gone before, that through the evils rampant in our land, we stand in very perilous times.
As a returned man I am here, not to flaunt the flag, to give a pleasant patriotic address, but to face facts, to look to the coming generation and to beg that we give to these boys and girls, of our best.
As members of the Canadian Legion we come asking you to remember as Canadian citizens, you can be in matters of self-control, a living example to our youth.
When we have trained up our young people to take our place - strong and true - then, only then we can say, we have done our part, then we can be proud of this country to which we belong then we can say in triumph “we are of this Canada the land beloved of God, we are the pulse of Canada, its marrow and its blood, then we can face the world and brag that we were born in Canada, beneath the British flag”
Following this inspirational message Rev B Fream and Dr McBride each contributed brief but appropriate addresses.
The singing of “O God our help in ages past” and “God save the King” brought the meeting to a close”.

- Notes on Fred May from his niece Harriet Andrew (2006):
Uncle Fred [May] would dress nephews in his uniforms. [Also have pictures of his wife Mabel dressing up in uniform.] He was brought up by his grandmother and aunt – don’t know where his mother was. Had a hard life: entered a military academy early. Scared of kids – didn’t know how to act with them. Aunt Mabel had a stillborn baby near the time that Harriet Andrew was born – wanted to adopt Harriet buy Nell said no. Harriet used to visit them a lot and help out with baking, dusting and looking at photo albums to avoid dusting! At first, she was intimidated by her Uncle Fred until she discovered his weak point: shortbread. One day he came into the kitchen to sneak some of the shortbread she was making and whispered in her ear – don’t tell your aunt! Harriet realized he was just like a big kid, and was better after that. Uncle Fred had a 2-door vehicle (why not 4 – would have been easier to get in and out of?) and was always dropping crowds of relatives and visitors around. Sometimes he was quite overwhelmed, and looks that way in the picture on Uncle Albert’s doorstep.
Uncle Fred liked to fish at Dunk River [picture taken of him having a picnic there in 1936 with Mary and Rick Hunt]
Uncle Fred’s house was built on Pope Road = Sherbrooke Road, up from the corner with St Eleanor’s Store. He lived near the Hunts
They had no children.

- 1914: when she was 20 she moved to St Eleanors, and “went to Charlotte[town] that [previous] winter to spend it with her mother’s first coiusin and her husband. They were old people. And when I came back, father couldn’t get along without me you see, so he sold the place, sold the farm, and bought a place in St Eleanors.”

- RESIDENCE: lived in Sherbrooke as a girl (2 miles from St. Eleanors) where father had a small acreage and a market garden. Family then bought a big 2 storey house in St. Eleanors. After marriage lived on farm in N. St. Eleanors (~100 acres), then in house in St. Eleanors. Moved to Duncan, BC area in approx. 1950 (see group picture, Christmas 1950 in Duncan BC) - Harry and most of her family and already left, while she had stayed behind to nurse ailing parents. Her own health problems, she left PEI before her parents death in 1951 (likely in 1950).
Resided in the Duncan BC area for the rest if her life, first in a house on Herd Road which she really liked, particularly the large veranda. I don’t think the family was there very long, needing to move closer into town to be closer to work (at the dairy?). Their next house was at 5784 Garden Street in Duncan, backing on the lane along side the lumberyard and near the train tracks. Later in life she lived with her daughter Harriet, also living at the time on Garden Street. She lived for several years at the Cowichan Lodge on Tzouhalem Road, Duncan.

Ruptured appendix about 1972. 1st cataract operation June 7, 1976, Victoria General hospital. 2nd operation for cataract Sept 27, 1976. Home from hospital Oct2/76. Surgery on left knee May 8, 1981. May 4, 1983 had marrow biopsy - mild type of bone cancer. May 17, 1983 scan of liver and bowel showed lots of gall stones. Infected appendix scar Jan, 1984 due to black thread still in place.
