Born in Smith County, Texas in July 1862, "Smith" Cansler was the eldest of nine children born to George Calvin Cansler and Sarah Ellen Edwards. Robert would marry Indiana "Annie" Tarter in November 1894. Annie was the daughter of Andrew Tarter and Mary Hunt. Andrew was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky, on 19 November 1840. Robert and Annie Cansler were part of the 1898 wagon train which traveled from Bowie, Texas, to Greer County, Oklahoma. Smith drove his wagon to virgin land, about a mile west of where his father, George Calvin Cansler had chosen to settle. Smith's new farm would be about five miles north of the town of Hollis, Oklahoma.
