RESEARCH NOTES
- no birth indexed in Manitoba under either Douglas or Howard, nor in 1882 or 1882.
- a birth registration for different Douglas Howard Johnston 30 Aug 1901 is almost the next generation - this younger Douglas was the son of Wm Johnston and Carrie L McDowell (miner living at Thomson’s Landing).
- if at death he had lived in BC 54 years, this calculated to a move from Manitoba in 1889.
- WED: believed never married
- can’t find in 1921 Canada census.
- family sources said that he was known as Howard, that he was asmatic and that he died on skid row in Vancouver - as some of this was also claimed for a different relative, there is likely a mixup here and this information may not be correct.
- Mountain View Cemetery online index does NOT include a listing for either Douglas or Howard Johnston - were his ashes really buried there?

From family and other researchers
- He never married
- Outgoing personality, "man about town"
- DIED in World War 1
- 1917: He served in the First World War and rose to the rank of Major in the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders and was killed in France on March 1, 1917.
- There is not much [Johnston] memorabilia ... maybe only 1 photo of Irene. There is a medallion with great-uncle Russell's name on it; I think it was an item presented to the family of someone who died in WW I. He made it all the way to the rank of Major before he died at the age of 33. The only other photo (aside from the one on your webpage) I've seen of Russell is one where he is in amongst his rugby team, which was a team of the Vancouver Rowing Club. Russell is third from the left, back row, of the guys in striped shirts.

RESEARCH NOTES
- BIRTH: may have been born in Ontario (like her parents) or in Emerson, Manitoba (some other siblings were). Birth year said to be 1887 by Jack Boorman, death record on internet gave 1888. Needs to have been born later in 1887 if she was 73 at death in May, 1961. Can’t find birth registration in Manitoba or BC. Checked Ontario births (1869 to 1911) on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~births/index.htm - couldn’t find her there either.

- 1945 BC and Yukon Directory (Vancouver)
Delisle, Irene emp Boeing r 1750 Haro
[only 3 others with this surname listed: Joe, Minnie and Wilbur G (Yvette) - where was Rodney?]

From her grandson:
- I never met my grandmother Irene, as she was long gone by the time I was born
- I think Irene's middle name was misspelled somewhere along the line, although I've only ever seen it as Devere. Seems more logical that it was her father's mother's maiden name - Dever, but at this point, who knows?
On 6 May 1922 when Irene Devere was 30, she married Otto Rodney* DELISLE, son of Charles Arthur DELISLE & Helen Augusta MAGUIRE, in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Born on 26 Apr 1892 in Bristol, Pontiac, Quebec, Canada. Otto Rodney* died in Richmond, Vancouver, BC, Canada, on 14 Jul 1965; he was 73.
