Notes from a descendant:
- “Elizabeth (Grigg) Parkyn. Born 3 August 1831 at Kilkhampton, Cornwall, died 23 October 1912 at Uley, Gloucestershire, buried at St. Nicholas Church, Trellech, Gwent (Monmouthshire), Wales. [She was] My great-great grandmother, mother of John WIlliam Parkyn. A woman of legenday strength of mind and character. Her children held her in great awe. My grandmother, aged about 6, remembered being shown into her grandmother's drawing room by a maid one Christmas, having been previously instructed to kiss her grandmother on the cheek, and say, "Merry Christmas Gradmama." Then, to keep silent unless spoken to. G-g grandmother Parkyn had not approved of her son Willie marrying a Welsh farmer's daughter. This directly or indirectly had a lot to do with the Willie, Cecilia and their young family emigrating to Canada in 1906.”
- “She was a formidable person, with many virtues. Though very severe, I think. Her daughter Elizabeth ("Lillie")was a gifted musician, played piano and organ for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on one occasion (a festival for musically talented British youth). When Aunt Lillie wished to perform in public, her mother forbade it - ladies didn't do this. G-g grandmother also didn't approve of Lillie's suitors ("not 'one of us'. my dear"). Aunt Lillie died unmarried in the 1930s.”

- another researcher claims [this connection is on her mother’s Allin side, not her father’s Grigg side]:
“My great-great grandmother, Elizabeth (Grigg) Parkyn (1831-1912), of Uley, Gloucestershire, England - who brings the [Howard of Norfolk] line to her descendants - was an 11 greats granddaughter of the 1st Duke of Norfolk, and a 10 greats granddaughter of his daughter Anne.” … “Our descent from the 1st Duke of Norfolk runs down through the Howard, Gorges, Prideaux, Bowden, Allin, Bromell, Allin (again), Grigg, and Parkyn families.”… “this lineage is a classic example of "who knows what lurks in a family of 19th century West Country yeomen farmers." Parallel to Cornish family's possible Chamond connection, I suspect.” The Chamond-Cornish connection is, as we've discussed, a plausible theory. If true, it would be like this line I have through the Allins to "ancient lineage"."

- 1917: John died 30 Dec 1917 at Tutshill, Tidenham, Gloucestershire (ref FGR).

- St. Nicholas's Church, Trellech, Gwent, Wales. John Collings and Elizabeth (Grigg) Parkyn are buried in the churchyard, along with two of their children, Annie and Lindon.

Notes from his gg-grandson:
- “John C. Parkyn was indeed well-educated. His father, the Rev. William Rowett Parkyn (1808-1889), attended Eton, and was, I believe, learned. By the way, WRP had a signed photograph from (then Prime Minister) William Gladstone, his friend from Eton days. Wish I knew what became of that photo. The Rev. William Rowett Parkyn owned an estate called Ilmsworthy (otherwise Elmsworthy, in the parish of Kilkhampton), which he left to his only son, John C. Parkyn, who sold it at some point. Ilmsworthy was an ancient and large house, possibly a medieval core, certainly largely Tudor, I think. Long since torn down. It was as a young man living in his father's house, Ilmsworthy, that JCP met and married Elizabeth Grigg (interesting that she was 35 at her marriage, he 27: a 7 1/2 years age difference).
My g-g grandfather, John Collings Parkyn, was a loveable man, and that comes through loud and clear across all these miles and years that intervene. My grandmother, Lilian (Parkyn) Shields (1896-1988), whom I knew very well and was lucky to have in my life till I turned 40, adored him, and cherished his letters and his memory. He painted some pen and ink drawings for her and sent when she had newly arrived in Canada. Have to tell you, though, that his wife - Elizabeth (Grigg) Parkyn - was most difficult, disapproving, and something of a snob. She looked down on her daughter-in-law, my great grandmother, Cecilia (a Welsh farmer's daughter).
In G-g grandfather's letter, the riddle about Adam he mentions coming from "The Very Revd. the Dean of Ballarat". This was his first cousin. the Rev. Nathaniel Lindon-Parkyn (1851-1931), Dean of Ballarat (Australia), and rector of a church in northern England. He retired to Bath, where he died in 1931.”

- John Collings Parkyn (1839-1917) drew this pen-and-ink "Little Bo Peep" on 6 postcards in 1909. When his son (John) William Parkyn, his wife and chidlren left England for Canada (later to the US) in 1906, the children's grandfather - John Collings Parkyn (1839-1917) - back in Gloucestershire, England, missed them sorely. He drew these for his granddaughter (my grandmother) Lilian Parkyn, then 11 years old, living at Ingersoll, Canada.…

- Postcard from John Collings Parkyn to his granddaughter Lilian Parkyn, c. 1908. It is of the village of Uley, in Gloucestershire, where John C. and Elizabeth (Grigg) Parkyn lived in a house called “St. Maur”. As he describes, St. Maur is the tall building behind the trees. In 1973, I drove to Uley and found it all virtually unchanged. He certainly was a master penman - as this and his drawings make clear. The postcard itself is small, his handwriting is minute and perfect.

- After John Collings Parkyn retired from business is Cardiff, they moved a little east to Gloucestershire, not far from Chepstow (Gwent, Wales), on the Wye. Trellech (in Gwent) was near both Uley and Tutshill, Glocuestershire, where the Parkyns had come to live. So, when young daughter Annie died in 1897, I suspect g-g grandfather Parkyn bought burial plots In Trellech, only a short distance from their Gloucestershire home (though in Gwent, Wales).

- “The will of William Rowett Parkyn (1808-1889), of Elmsworthy, Kilkhampton, Cornwall. In it he leaves his estate, Elmsworthy (here spelled Ilmsworthy), in the parish of Kilkhampton, Cornwall, to his only son, John Collings Parkyn (1839-1917).
In the Rev. R. Dew’s, /A History of the Parish and Church of Kilkhampton/ (London, 1926), there is an account of this very old house.
“Elmsworthy, another old house, lying about two miles north of the village, was at one time occupied by a family which maintained its position for several generations. This was the family of Westlake, whose arms were: ‘Per pale az. and or: a chevron engrailed between 3 lions rampant counter-charged’.
The name [Elmsworthy] occurs in the [parish] registers continuously for 250 years. The Westlakes were connected with many old West-country families, including the Bullers and Speccotts of Thornbury. In the eighteenth century their circumstances became much reduced. A grandson of Richard Westlake, who died in 1704, and is commemorated by a marble monument in the church, is said to have applied for the mastership of a school which had been founded by his family, but this was refused. He became an inmate of the workhouse, and it is a singular fact that by the irony of fate he was twice set down for Sheriff of the county after his removal there. He is said to have been the last of the family, and died in 1772.”
Just how William Rowett Parkyn came to own Elmsworthy is not yet clear, although I suspect he may have purchased it himself, having married an heiress, Elizabeth Lindon Collings (1803-1860).”

- Though more work is needed, it appears likely my g-g grandfather [John Collings] Parkyn (through whose wife you and I are cousins) descended from a certain Helena (Scrope) Clark (born at the manor house in Castle Combe in 1675). So, not a line we share, sadly.

- Also (about this John Parkyn’s grandfather):
St. Columb Major, Cornwall, England [was where] my 4 greats grandfather, John Parkyn, was christened … on 19 February 1773. In later life he lived at Polperro, in the parish of Talland, Cornwall. He and his wife, Ann (Rowett) Parkyn, were mentioned in one of their sons' death notices, " [They were] both eminent Christians. They had a large family, seven sons and one daughter. Five of the sons became preachers - three in America, and William and his youngest brother, Nathaniel, in England." St. Tallan's Church, Talland, Cornwall. Generations of ancestors baptized, married, and buried here - names of Polgreen, Minards, Johns, Rowett, and Parkyn.
