RESEARCH NOTES
From another family researcher:
- Lillie Cory was a daughter of Elizabeth (Grigg) Parkyn's sister, Rebecca (Grigg) Wills. Elizabeth "Lillie" (Wills) Cory and her sister Emma Grigg Wills married brothers, (James) Herbert (in 1919 created a baronet) and John Cory, shipowners, of Cardiff.
- Our great grandfather, (John) William Parkyn (1869-1947), was a close friend of his first cousin, Elizabeth (“Lillie”) (Wills) Cory (1856-1908), first wife of Sir Herbert Cory, 1st Baronet (1857-1933), a shipping magnate and co-owner with his brother of the large Cory fleet, based in Cardiff, Wales. In the years leading up to the Parkyns leaving Britain for Canada in 1906, Lillie Cory was a protective benefactress of her younger cousin Willie Parkyn, who was struggling to make a living and support his numerous young family.
-1906: April 1906 letter from Elizabeth ("Lillie") (Wills) Cory to her first cousin, John William Parkyn, our great grandfather. from another researcher:
“I visited the house in 1973, when it was no longer owned by the family and was an administrative center for the South Wales postal service. … When I "cold called" at the former home of our cousins in 1973 (then owned by the South Wales postal service), I mentioned Sir Donald Cory, Bt., (died 1935) had been my cousin. A post office exec then kindly took me on a tour of Coryton. Upstairs he showed me many rooms, one of therm, "This was Her Ladyship's [Cousin Lillie's] dressing room." Best of all, downstairs was the former billiards room. Entirely wood paneled. On one section of the wall, he flicked - with his toe (I think it was) a piece of paneling which suddenly opened a hidden door. Very cool, I thought - and still do!”
