On 31 Jul 1799 when George was 33, he second married Sarah HAMMOND in Goudhurst, Kent, England. Born ca 1774.
A widow before marrying George Richardson in 1799
RESEARCH NOTES
- another source lists a Sarah (no last name) born abt 1770, of Brede Sussex who married George 2 May 1781 (this exact date was used for another couple so may be a typo)... George was only about 15 in 1781 so unlikely to be accurate
- It seems possilbe that this Sarah was married 3 times, and had children with 4 partners: William Brese, George Richardson, Benjamin Noakes, and William Davis
- Sarah's first married name of Brese [she was a widow when she married George Richardson] - it may have been something else like Breeds or Breeze as the name Brese is unusual.
- A Removal Order, dated 14 January 1812 at Brede, removing an Elizabeth Brese, daughter of William Brese (Private in the Montgomery Militia) and Sarah Brese, formerly Hammond, from Brede to Goudhurst, Kent. This would appear to be a daughter of Sarah's.
Then found a marriage between Sarah Hammond and William Brees at Willingdon, Sussex on 19 September 1795. The name Brese (Brees etc) appears to be a Welsh one.
There is a baptism for an Elizabeth Brees on 21 January 1798 at Lydd, Kent, parents William Brees and Sarah which could be her. Being in the Militia would mean moving around.
I have transcripts of Goudhurst parish registers but apart from the marriage of Sarah Brese to George Richardson there in 1799 I can't find anything else for the name Brese (or anything relevant for Hammond). Also no Hammonds at Willingdon, either.
Obtaining a copy of the Removal Order doc might shed more light on why Elizabeth had to go back to Goudhurst.
It looks most likely that Spencer Richardson's mother was Sarah, widow of George. He had a half-sister Margaret Ann and named one of his children Margaret. Not conclusive of course but adds a little weight to the other evidence.
- Elizabeth Brese [Sarah’s daughter] would have been about 17 by 1812 when she was 'removed' from Brede to Goudhurst, so it's possible that she could have been pregnant and went to the Parish for support. George Richardson probably didn't leave his widow penniless upon his death according to his Will. There is a mystery though as he left his estate to Sarah, and to John Harvey, a thatcher of Goudhurst. I think he's the one at Goudhurst at the 1851 census age 80 with wife Sarah (Smith).
I wonder how he fits in?!
- Spencer Richardson baptised at Brede on 3 February 1810 was the son of Sarah Richardson, a widow, and Benjamin Noakes, so he was not a Richardson by blood.
Maintenance order Brede PAR253/34/3/10 13 Mar 1810
Contents:
Benjamin Noakes of Brede, shopkeeper; for maintenance of boy born to Sarah Richardson, widow. I'm not sure which widowed Sarah Richardson this was. There is a marriage for a Sarah Richardson, widow, at Brede 26 October 1812 marrying William Davis. Spencer's wife was Elizabeth Cook - they married at Whatlington on 1 July 1832. Spencer was 'of Hastings St Mary in the Castle'.
- I've done a bit more digging and found a Removal Order for William Davis and wife Sarah and children William (age 3) and Harriet (age 2) removing them from Brede to the nearby parish of Icklesham in early 1816. They must have come back again to Brede as the next two children were baptised there. However, a transcript of burials at Icklesham shows the burial for William Davis age 9, 'son of William and Sarah' in 1822, and then for William Davis age 43 in 1832 and for Sarah Davis, widow age 60, in 1835. So, Sarah would have been born c 1774 and William Davis c1789.
- Sussex burial index lists a Sarah Richardson, buried 15 Aug 1831 St George Brede, 52y (=> b 1779) - is it this Sarah?
