RESEARCH NOTES:
- SOURCES: TEMPLE ORDINANCES: Old style Archive Record from the Salt Lake Genealogical Library shows Baptized: 11 Dec 1968; Endowed: 16 Jan 1969; Sealed to Parents: 25 Jul 1969; all in the Los Angeles Temple.
On 30 Oct 1799 when Martha was 19, she married Thomas SLAUGHTER in St George Church, Brede, East Sussex, England. Born in 1777 in Canterbury, Kent, England. Christened on 1 May 1777 in Holy Cross Westgate, Canterbury, Kent, England. Thomas died on 15 Jul 1833; he was 56.

- Son of William Slaughter (1752) and Susannah Jennings (1755), grandson of William Slaughter (1726) and Susannah Moulden (1729), and great-grandson of John Slaughter (1685) and Katherine Finnes (1697).

- CHRISTENING: Holy Cross West Gate, Canterbury, Kent, England. The entry was searched for for years in every conceivable parish in Kent and finally located and reported by Achievements, Ltd., 29 Sep 1975. They searched Parish Registers of Holy Cross, Westgate, Canterbury, Kent, England; U3/10/1/1 Baptisms Jan 1678/79 to Nov 1690. "From last parchment leaf of the register: 1 May 1777 Thomas son of Wiliiam Slaughter and Susanna his wife. This omitted in the parish register taken a faithful copy of the Clarke book Jly 24 1799. Inserted here J Gosling vicar." Ancestral File CSD5-9H

- DEATH: The death date we have comes from Sarah Slaughter, daughter of Thomas, on a little scr ap of paper giving the birth and death dates of various members of the family. The paper was with things in the possession of Annie Huey Slaughter and divided up by the family when she died. It came into the posession of Nicholas Slaughter, Bakersfield, CA 93311, from his father who had obtained it from Annie Slaughter Sackett. We have not been able to acertain the place where Thomas died and was buried but his will was signed and dated Glasgow, Scotland

Comments by Stephen Williamson: William and Thomas Slaughter were still tanning in Canterbury in 1809, but their father Will iam Jnr and his cousin Edward seemed to have returned to Sandwich about 1802. William Jnr an d his sons William and Thomas listed as tanners near Westgate in 1802 Militia Reserve List (L ieutenancy Roll). William Slaughter listed as Tanner in Canterbury and William Slaughter Jn r. (his father) as Tanner in Sandwich, Edward Slaughter Gent in Sandwich, John Slaughter as B utcher, Isaac Slaughter Jun. as Collector of Customs, Isaac Slaughter Sen. Gent, William Slau ghter Sen. Gent in 1803 Finch’s Directory. Thomas Slaughter listed as Tanner, North Lane in H olden 1805/7 Directory. William Slaughter (Jnr) listed in 1803/1808 Finch Directories and in 1824 Pigot Dir. as Tanne r in Sandwich and in 1828 Pigot Dir. at the Canterbury Gate. William Jnr died 27/10/1829 in S andwich . Some bank details for William Slaughter survive for period 1788-1815 and are stil l to be investigated.

- 1819 - Listed only as Henry Richardson in marriage register.
- 1819 Extract from the Sussex FHG Marriage Index:
Place: Brede, East Sussex, Date: 19 Jun 1819:
Subject: Henry RICHARDSON, bach otp
Spouse: Ann PECKHAM, sp Appledore KEN (lic)

- 1824 to 1841 listed as Brede Parish Clerk in a 1946 book on Brede by Edmund Austen

- Occupation listed as both Parish Clerk and Farmer (from children’s baptisms).

- According to the book “Hop Token Issuers and Their Tokens” by Alan Henderson, there was a Henry Richardson of Church House Farm who issued hop tokens to his hop pickers. “The only date we have for this issuer is 1819 which appears on one of his tokens. ESLT shows that Henry Richardson Sen. owned and occupied Church Land, Brook’s, Loneham, The Home Land, Parkwood, York Land, Kings Wood Land. The largest of these holdings was Church Lands. Mention of Richardson Sen. suggests that there was also a Henry Richardson Jr. The tokens are brass cast in values of B1, B12, B30, and B60, the name of the last two being Richardsons, which perhaps suggests father and son working together. The B60 is dated 1819.” [2004 pamphlet, ASIN: B005HE5IYW]

- 1841 census, Brede Hill, lists family of Henry Richardson (50), Henery “ (15), James “ (11), George “ (9), Damaris “ (7, female), Lewis “ (5). All born in same county. HO 107/1106/7 Occupation: 1841, No occupation, age 50, of Brede Hill, Brede, SSX

- 1850 - Death certificate states he died at age 61, a “reduced farmer”. Informant: Nath P. Kell Coroner, Battle, Registrar: James Richardson.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- Handwriting on his son Henry Proctor’s marriage certificate [1853] indicates his middle name is Proster [sic] (as was the son’s). A note below the father’s name says “(dec’d)” - deceased [his father Henry died in 1850].

- Richardson Brede baptism records span 1729 - 1833. They do NOT include a Henry Proctor or even a Henry around 1789. The closest Henry baptism was in 1778. Records may be incomplete or he was baptised elsewhere or not at all. These parish records are housed in the Record Office in Lewes, East Sussex and are too fragile to film, so can’t be viewed directly... It seems likely with a middle name of Proctor that he is the son of Henry Richardson and Martha Proctor.

On 19 Jun 1819 when Henry Proctor was 30, he married Ann PACKHAM, daughter of William PACKHAM (1763-1841) & Mary STEVENS (1772-1827), in Brede, East Sussex, England. Born in 1799 in Appledore, Kent, England. Christened on 14 Jul 1799 in Appledore, Kent, England. Ann died on 17 Dec 1838; she was 39. Buried on 20 Dec 1838 in St George Church, Brede, Sussex, England.

- 1799 baptism [from ancestry.com]:
Name: Ann Packam
Gender: Female
Baptism/Christening Date: 14 Jul 1799
Baptism/Christening Place: Appledore, Kent, England
Father's Name: William Packam
Mother's Name: Mary Packam

Reference Number: Item 1

- 1799 Baptised Appledore, Kent on 14 July 1799 as Ann Packham (as per transcript), parents William Packham and Mary Stevens. Ann Packham's baptism was entry 969 on 14 July 1799. [Also said incorrectly that Ann was baptised 11 Sept 1797 - a mixup with her sister Rebecca who was baptsied then (Kent FHS CD 21).

- 1819 Marriage Place: Brede, East Sussex. Date 19 Jun 1819. Henry Richarson, bach. of this parish. Ann Peckham, spinster, Appledore KEN (license)

- 1838 death certificate of Ann Richardson, wife of a reduced farmer, says she died in the parish of Brede, age 39, on 17 Dec 1838, of child birth. Informant was Hy P Richardson, widower, Brede Village. Registrar: James Richardson. Sadly she appears to have died within an hour of giving birth to Mary.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- Ann had 9 [10?] siblings. BUT according to another researcher: “It looks as if there is another couple William and Mary on the scene after 1801 as it would be physically impossible for one woman to have given birth to all those children within those dates. However, there's no evidence e.g. marriage for another couple [in Appledore].” [This comment may have been caused my a mistaken date of the youngest child Harriet - another index says 1809 rather than 1808. 11 children is not unreasonable.]

- From another researcher: there is only 1 Ann Richardson buried in Sussex between 1850 and 1910 - buried 25 May 1854 at age 10mo., so not the right Ann. So, if she was buried in Brede, Sussex it is before 1850 or after 1857 when these online records stopped. There were 10 Sussex burials for Ann Richardson between 1833 and 1854 - 1 only in Brede. You'll notice her maiden name is given as Peckham [on her death certificate]. One difficulty with the Sussex dialect is the way that the 'a' and 'e' sounds are pronounced. Although Sussex born and bred, I don't have a Sussex accent, but my Dad had one. For example, I can remember that he would pronounce the word 'bag' as 'beg'. So, you'll see the problem with knowing whether Ann really was a Packham or a Peckham.
- burial records show a 10 week old baby Mary Richardson buried Feb 27 1839, making her birth about the time of Ann’s death, suggesting death caused by complications during delivery. This turned out to be true.

- From another researcher: “Looking at the Access to Archives (A2A) website there was an entry for Ann Peckham, a removal order from Brede sending her back to Appledore - Reference: PAR253/32/2/81 Removal order from Brede - Creation dates: 10 Mar 1818 - Scope and Content: Ann Peckham, pregnant; to Appledore, Kent” - 15 months later on 19 Jun 1819 they were married in Brede, presumably after the child was born - was that Henry (the first)?
They had the following children:

Henry RICHARDSON (Died as Child) (~1819-1823)

RESEARCH NOTES:
- A James and Eliza/Elizabeth Richardson are listed in the Brede Baptism transcripts, listing 5 children baptised between 1816 and 1822 - could be this James.
- think James Sr. was the one buried in Brede on 27/12/1856 and his wife died in Tenterden district, Kent in 1877.
- Death certificate difficult to read - probably died twenty second of December, 1856 (death was registered 23 Dec 1856) - died age 67.
- James Richardson, brother of Henry P. Interestingly he died in High Street, Hastings. What on earth was James , a farmer, doing there? High Street is in the part of Hastings known as the Old Town, and was very much an area for the fishing families (and smuggling). Elizabeth Bailey (the informant on the death cert) and husband Mark were living at 96 High Street in 1851. I wondered if Elizabeth might have been connected to the Richardson family but her maiden name was Hard and her birthplace was given as Eastbourne.
On 5 Apr 1815 when James was 26, he married Eliza Ann Irving RICHARDSON (32) , daughter of Thomas RICHARDSON (11) (~1757-1823) & Elizabeth Ashburnham NORTH (1762-1798), in Brede, East Sussex, England. Born on 22 Sep 1793 in Dallington, Sussex, England. Christened on 8 Nov 1793 in St Giles, Dallington, Sussex, England. James [Richardson], the son of Henry and Martha and his wife, who was also his cousin, Eliza Ann Erving Richardson. Eliza Ann was born in Dallington, Sussex on 22/09/1793 to Thomas (brother of Henry) and Elizabeth Ashburnham North. She was christened in Dallington on 08/11/1793.
- marriage date of James R and Eliza Ann Irving - 05 04 1815

- 1815 listed as granddaughter and heir Eliza Anne Irvine nee Richardson, wife of James Richardson of Brede, farmer, in a conveyance document associated with the will of her grandfather Rev William North (who died 1800).

- I wonder if her mother, Elizabeth Ashburnham North wasn't related to the Earl of Ashburnham who was a principal landowner in that part of Sussex- Dallington, Mountfield area. Perhaps North was the name of a first husband before she married Thomas ?
They had the following children:
87i.
