- 1916 60th wedding anniversary:
From the Waterloo Evening Courier, Feb 25, 1916 (Pg 9)
“Plainfield, Ia., Feb. 25 - (Special) - Mr. and Mrs. Orrin West of this place celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary Monday, Feb. 21, at which time they received the congratulations and good wishes of hundreds of friends and acquaintances. A surprise "at home" was planned in their honor and the festivities continued well thru the day.
“During the hours from 2 to 5 and from 7:30 to 9, ninety-nine people personally congratulated Mr. and Mrs. West, among them friends from Minnesota, Montana, Waterloo, Nashua, Charles City, Waverly, Hazelton, Leon, Horton and Plainfield. One hundred nineteen letters and cards were received from different parts of the United States and the couple also received telegrams from Washington and Illinois. Some beautiful flowers were sent by friends and other tokens were received.
“Each guest was priviledged to sit in a chair that had been in the home of Mr. and Mrs. West since they began housekeeping, sixty years ago, while he registered his name in a book provided for that purpose. When refreshments were served, the sugar was passed in a bowl that was among the first dishes that graced their table in their new home established in the pioneer days of Iowa. Many other relics were there, among them a silver teaspoon 133 years old, bought in England by Mrs. West's grandfather.
“Each family represented there was presented a souvenir card consisting of a reprint of a recent photograph of the honored couple, the gift of Amos West.
“During the first hour of the afternoon Mesdames Anna Miller, Sophia Swinton and Mr. Amos West, acted as the receiving committee. During the second hour a committee from the W. C. T. B., Mesdames Lulu Drestler and Olive Deeming, received the callers. A committee from the Methodist church, Mesdames Ada Folks, Marte Robinson and Rev. Mr. Kopke, made it pleasant for the guests during the third hour. During this hour, messages from former pastors were presented and read, eight having been received. Leo Ladage played some violin numbers. In the evening a committee from the Baptist church, Mrs. Elle Magoon, Mrs. Lewtie Krieger and J. J. Lynes, took charge, and the reception closed with a pleasant hour, consisting of songs and talks by Rev. Mr. Kopke and Rev. Mr. Blodgett and others.
“Previous to the afternoon reception relatives to the number of twenty six enjoyed a picnic dinner with Mr. and Mrs. West. This was a surprise and will long be remembered by all.
“Mr. West was born Jan 20, 1832. Mrs. West, whose maiden name was Nancy D. Townsend, was born April 20, 1834. Both were natives of New York state and came west to Illinois in praries schooners. They were married in Mayfield, Ill., Feb. 21, 1856.”
