RESEARCH NOTES
- One source says born 1801 (seems to be quite a late baby - possible error?) More likely he was born 1771
- from a different researcher: I have them as William BOORMAN & Elizabeth WOOD, m. 21 Oct 1791 Ulcombe, Kent.
If William did fight in the Napoleonic wars then he survived. At the Kent Quarter Sessions of 1790, a William BOORMAN, Wheelwright, of Headcorn faced a bastardy hearing regarding the child of Eleanor HOSMER a single woman. Was it this William or his father? (1790 hearing 138). If it were William Jnr then it doesn't seem to have affected his inheritance.
Some other possibilities
- William was born 19 May 1771 in or near Headcorn, so this could be his 1841 Census entry:-

A Copy of the Registers of the Parish of Headcorn from Lady Day 1790 to Lady day 1791 - Marriages 1790 [2nd entry]:
“June 24 William Denman of the parish of Hythe Batchelor and Ann boorman of this parish Spinster were married in this church by Licence.”
- They lived at Hythe on the Kent coast with 3 children born to them there: John, William, Elizabeth
- About 1795 they went to America, for [baby] Elizabeth died in New York in 1795
- 1819 in fathers will: He bequeaths to his daughter Ann, wife of William Denman, now in North America, 30 pounds sterling and one-sixth of his goods.
- From Settlement of the Neversink Country:
“In 1795 Willliam and Ann Denman came to the Neversink Country from Ditchling, Sussex County, England, and settled on the hill now called Denman Mt. on 200 acres purchased sight unseen from James Debrosses. Mr Denman built a lean-to for shelter in the fall of 1795. He carved lettering into a rock showing the date of his settlement. Present day residents have seen this carving. Life was difficult in this remote area. Although the threat from Indeans was gone, the area was inhabited by panthers, wolves, and other wild animals. Farming and hunting provided for the family.... In spite of all hardships, the Denmans survived and prospered. Mr Denman replaced their one room log home with a two story plank house and he and his wife, Ann, raised and educated ten children in their new home so far from England.”

RESEARCH NOTES
- 11 children listed
- regarding marriage: “A search on Ancestry shows two sources of extracted parish records which list William Denman of Hythe, bachelor, and Ann Boorman of Headcorn, minor, father William Boorman, 23 Jun 1790 at Headcorn. Since these are extracted records of Canterbury licences I suspect that this is the licence (meaning there should also be an allegation and a bond somewhere in the parish). Also if the licence was issued 23 Jun then the marriage could well have taken place on 24 Jun, the next day. [The] image of a page obtained from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City shows that marriage recorded in a copy of the Register of the parish of Headcorn from Lady Day 1790 to Lady Day 1791 [shows the marriage was held on June 24 1790].”
- 1842, did she die in Jan or June?
- Another researcher reports: My sister and I have tried at least twice to find their gravestones in this cemetery without success, although I am told on good authority (by one of the cemetery Trustees and a Denman, that they are there. Guess another trip to Neversink may be in my future!
- posted in a “Amos Family Tree” on ancestry: “I have a marriage record from the General Baptist Chapel in Ditchling, Sussex, England, saying Ann Boorman married William Denman from Hythe there on 23rd June 1790!! (She was born in Headcorn, Kent, according to this record.) This chapel has in their archives, letters sent much later on from America to England to William's brother John, and letters from John to William. Apparently John joined William in Amereica, then returned home toEngland!”
On 24 Jun 1790 when Ann was 17, she married
William DENMAN , son of William DENMAN & Ann MARTEN, in Headcorn, Kent, England.
Born on 10 Nov 1763 in Ditchling, Sussex, England. William died in Neversink, Sulivan County, NY, USA, on 10 Dec 1858; he was 95. Buried in 1858 in Grahamsville Rural Cemetery, Grahamsville, Sullivan County, New York, USA.

The following was written by his granddaughter, Priscilla Denman Eller, "I can remember my grandfather; he lived with my father (Henry Denman)many years on the old Denman homestead in the town of Neversink. There he settled when he first came to America. He was a scholar, & a gentleman. I remember his quoting Shakespeare,Milton Young's, Night Thoughts, & many other works to me in my childhood." "He was a man of iron will, strong likes & dislikes." "He endured many privations as one of the first settlers of this country, but his iron constitution endured the mall well & at the age of 90 years he was hale & hearty; walking 4 miles to present me with his photograph, which I still have in a good state of preservation. He died at the age of 95 & 1 month." submitted by B Foster

RESEARCH NOTES
From other researchers:
- Son of Willliam Denman (died aft 1782) and Ann Marten. The pedigree goes back 3 further generations, all named William Denman.(from another researcher)
- From a book called “Denman Family History” published 1913 by Harris, pages 67-74 :
“Two brothers, William and John Denman, came from Sussex County, England, to America in 1795. They were descendants of William Denman of Newhall Grange, Brampton, in Cumberland, who is found on record in the latter part of the fourteenth century as possessing that Manor.
“William was born at Ditchley [Ditchling?], Sussex County, England, November 10, 1763, and died at Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY, December 10, 1858. He was married at Headcom [sic], County Kent, England, June 24, 1790 to Ann Boorman, who was born at Staplehurst, County Kent, August 9, 1772 and died at Neversink, NY, June 5, 1847. They had eleven children: John, William, Elizabeth, Edward, Thomas, Elizabeth the second, Jane, Martin, Ann, Henry, and Samuel. Of these the first three were born at Hythe, County Kent, in England, and all the others in Sullivan Co, New York….”
- Hythe Kent is apparently where William already was living when he and Ann Boorman married, and where they lived as a young family. So far no clues about how/why he got there from the Ditchling area or what he did there. I don't think there was a Baptist presence so he may have broken with the church? Their children John, Edward, and the first Elizabeth were all born in Hythe
“the French Revolution … (1789-1799) …may have been part of the young Denmans decision to migrate to the very new country that was America in 1795. … I have found no information so far that tells why William Denman moved to the coast from his Sussex farming town. This move took him away from his General Baptist church community. There is, so far, no documentation of any group moving to the Hythe area at that time and it was a close-knit community. That was presumably why William went back to it for his bride, traveling some distance to Headcorn to marry in 1790 having already settled in Hythe.”
[From wikpedia: “Hythe, is a small coastal market town on the edge of Romney Marsh, in the District of Shepway on the south coast of Kent. The word Hythe or Hithe is an Old English word meaning Haven or Landing Place.” It is just west of Folkestone and SW of Ashford.] [Ditchling is above 15km NNE of Brighton and Hove, quite a distance west along the cost from Folkestone.]
[Hythe is quite a distance east of Brighton Sussex along England’s south coast; Brighton is south of Ditching]

RESEARCH NOTES
- NAME: is his middle name Hicks? NO. As one researcher reports:
John Hicks is a different person [more distantly related] who was baptised at East Grinstead 12 May 1765, married Jane Martyr and died 17 Oct 1832. John & Jane are buried together in a very elaborate tomb at East Peckham, Kent. [see indexed records on familysearch.org - he was the son of William Boorman and Elizabeth Lynn]
- This John Boorman [son of William and Ann] was landlord of "The Crown" at Staplehurst and he keeled over and died one morning whilst pulling ale in January 1810, most likely from a stroke or heart attack.
- MARRIAGES:
version 1: 1) Ann Barter, 2) Lucy ?
version 2: 1) Sarah Barten, 2) Lucy Woore
- Regarding the family legend of 2 of Thomas’s brothers going off to Napoleonic war and dying:
“John BOORMAN I have as born 20 Apr 1774 Staplehurst, marrying Sarah BARTEN and Lucy WOORE, dying 21 Jan 1810 and being buried 26 Jan 1810 Staplehurst. The first British involvement in the Peninsular Wars was to send an expeditionary force to Spain in Aug 1808. So it would have been possible for John to have been part of that force and to have been repatriated with injuries from which he subsequently died. Thomas had two younger brothers, David and Edward, who died in 1843 and 1858 respectively. Apart from John who had died, all four of the surviving sons were beneficiaries in William Snr's Will.”
On 17 Sep 1798 when John was 24, he first married
Sarah BARTEN in Staplehurst All Saints, Staplehurst, Kent, England.
Born in 1773 in Staplehurst, Kent, England. Sarah died in Staplehurst, Kent, England, on 4 Nov 1804; she was 31. Buried on 8 Nov 1804 in Staplehurst, Kent, England.

From other researchers
- Thomas was living in Southampton Street and that is where he died and was buried as BOREMAN 2 Aug 1845 St George's, Camberwell, aged 68 [see attached], so born c.1776/7, probably in Staplehurst, Kent, not Surrey as indicated above. I have only one marriage for him - to Ann CARPENTER 29 Jul 1801 All Saints, Maidstone, Kent.
- Southampton Street in London where Thomas Boorman died in 1845 and where he had his wheelwright’s business [photo taken 2012]
[Southampton Street is currently a short 2 blocks long, perpendicular to The Strand, very near Covent Gardens to the WNW, and a bend in the river Thames and the Waterloo Bridce A301. Camberwll is to the SE, south of the Thmas on the A202 and south of Southwark]
RESEARCH NOTES
- Version 1: suggests that Thomas was born 1780, died 1862, no locations, married to
a) Ann Bassett OR b) Ann Carpenter and Ann Bassett Old compilations state that Ann Bassett's sister married ???? Tamplin (farmer), whose daughter Ann Templin (Tamplin?) married William Seeley, whose son George Seeley married Louisa Boorman (relation of Thomas Boorman) in 1962/3 - this is likely not true?
Other researchers believe that Thomas married an Ann Carpenter, and not Ann Bassett. But the link to the Seeleys may still exist through the Boormans rather than the Bassetts. One researcher says that Thomas Boorman’s sister Susannah Boorman married a William Tamkin, and they had 3 children, including Ann Tamkin who married William Seeley (the parents of George Thomas Seeley who married Louisa Boorman, daughter of Thomas Boorman (1810) and Mary Ann Green. - quite a maze!
- Version 2: “Thomas was living in Southampton Street [Camberwell in 1841] and that is where he died and was buried as BOREMAN 2 Aug 1845 St George's, Camberwell, aged 68 [see attached burial record - record #1383, Abode: Southampton Street], so born c.1776/7, probably in Staplehurst, Kent, not Surrey as indicated above. I have only one marriage for him - to Ann CARPENTER 29 Jul 1801 All Saints, Maidstone, Kent.”
- “The only census in which Thomas appeared was that of 1841 when he was living in Camberwell, Surrey. In that he is shown as having been born in the county, i.e. Surrey. Now the 1841 Census is notoriously inaccurate and like all censuses is only as good as the information given by the householder and the quality of the enumerator. So Thomas may or may not have been born in Surrey. If he was born in Surrey then this is a possible baptism:-
15 Apr 1781 St Mary’s, Newington, Thomas S. of Thomas & Ann BORMAN
Thomas Henry bap. 10 Jul 1779 Newington of the same parents was bur. 25 Jun 1780 Newington but there was a replacement Thomas bap. 15 Apr 1781. Our Thomas was living in Southampton Street, St Giles, Camberwell in 1841 as a wheelwright. St Giles, Camberwell and St Mary's, Newington are neighbouring parishes. In the 1841 C Thomas is shown as born in county, i.e. in Surrey, so it is tempting to assume that he was the one bap. in 1781. However, his reported age at death in 1848 was 68. If that was correct then he would have been born 1776 or 1777. I think the fact that he was a wheelwright outweighs any conflicting evidence and so I would rule out the Thomas bap. 1781.”
- DEATH: year 1862? A Thomas Boorman is listed on a printout of a parish register for Jan 23,1791 (baptism date), son of Thomas Boorman and Mary Ann (!). Can't yet link positively.

- 2012 received a recent photo of “Southampton Street where Thomas Boorman died in 1845 and where he had his wheelwright's business”
Thomas first married Ann BASSETT, daughter of BASSETT.
RESEARCH NOTES
- This name is likely not a valid spouse of our Thomas Boorman, being replaced with Ann Carpenter
- FAMILY LINKS?: Ann Bassett's sister married ???? Tamplin (farmer), whose daughter Ann Templin (Tamplin?) married William Seeley, whose son George Seeley married Louisa Boorman (relation of Thomas Boorman) in 1962/3
Other researchers believe that Thomas married an Ann Carpenter, and not Ann Bassett. But the link to the Seeleys may be through the Boormans rather than the Bassetts. One research says that Thomas Boorman’s sister Susannah Boorman married a William Tamkin, and they had 3 children, including Ann Tamkin who married William Seeley.
On 29 Jul 1801 when Thomas was 25, he second married
Ann CARPENTER, daughter of Thomas CARPENTER & Mary DAY, in Maidstone, Kent, England.
Born on 5 Feb 1780 in Biddenden, Kent, England. Christened in Baptist Chapel, Headcorn, Kent, England. Ann died in Hackney Reg Dist, London, England, in Feb 1853; she was 72. Buried in St John Of Jerusalem, South Hackney, London, England.
NAME: First name from son Thomas's christening records. Surname from other researchers.

RESEARCH NOTES
- Posting online: “My wife was a BOORMAN, b. Beckenham, Kent. Her paternal g.g.g. grandfather was David BOORMAN, Wheelwright, b. ca. 1780/1, bap. 31 Mar 1807, aged 26, Marden, Kent. As his was an adult baptism, no parents' names are recorded in the PR. He may have been born in Staplehurst, Kent, as he married Elizabeth JENNER, 16 Aug 1804, Staplehurst. She was b. and bap. 19 Dec 1779, Frittenden, Kent, parents, John Mary, m. 1758, Frittenden, paternal grandparents Thomas Ann, m. 1731, Frittenden. Seeking David BOORMAN's parents.”
“Mary's information is that the Boorman’s were Flemish weavers who came over from Flanders in the 14th C. Now that of course does tie up with the research that John commissioned. Up until the late 16th C Cranbrook was the world centre for woollen cloth production and there were certainly a lot of BOORMANs in Cranbrook. “
---
“This BOORMAN family were wheelwrights for 300 years and for centuries before that they had been broadweavers. Both broadweaving and wheelwrighting were skilled trades involving specialised workshops, equipment and tools. Consequently they were very much trades that were passed down from father to son. David was also a wheelwright and his family carried on the trade until the advent of the motor car when some of them became bicycle and car mechanics.”
On 16 Aug 1804 when David was 23, he married Elizabeth JENNER, daughter of Charles JENNER & Ann CRITTENDEN, in All Saints, Staplehurst, Kent, England. Born in 1779 in Cranbrook, Kent, England. Christened on 18 Jul 1779 in St Dunstans, Cranbrook, Kent, England. Elizabeth died in Wateringbury, Kent, England, on 12 Dec 1858; she was 79. Buried on 20 Dec 1858 in Marden Churchyard, Kent, England.
RESEARCH NOTES
- 2 baptism entries recorded: 18 Jul 1779 Cranbrook and 19 Dec 1779 Frittenden- the one in Dec is likely for someone else.
- “David's wife Elizabeth JENNER was born in 1779 in Cranbrook. Her paternal great grandparents were Thomas JENNER & Mary BOORMAN m. 27 Jul 1693 Cranbrook. Mary was bap. 17 Jan 1668 Cranbrook, d. of William BOORMAN & Mary MATTHEWS, m. 4 Feb 1667 Cranbrook and thence back to John BOORMAN & Judith PEENDE, m. 11 Jun 1571 Cranbrook. So David BOORMAN and Elizabeth JENNER were 6c 1r but I doubt that they knew that!”
They had the following children:
Mary BOORMAN (William5, William4, William3, Thomas2, William1).
Born ca 1782. Mary died bef 1819; she was 37.
