- Gravestone marks grave of John and Mary Ann Boorman. St Michael & All Angels, Hartlip, graveyard.
In Loving Memory of Mary Ann, beloved wife of John Boorman, born March 15 1829, died September 23 1897 (aged 68)
Also John Boorman, husband of the above, died October 18 1917 aged 85 years.
Note: Small baby's headstone also at the foot of the grave thought to be that of their grandson, John Boorman, who died aged two of Diptheria in the 1890s. However no inscription could be read on the footstone, so purely speculative based on family information about the child.

RESEARCH NOTES
- there is an infant in Hartlip grave - was this the child of John and Mary Ann, or their son’s John & Henrietta’s?

- from another researcher: “[his father] John (1804) is further registered at Cripplegate [London] after 20 July 1837 just as John [not as John Thomas], son of John (1775) and Rachel Boorman. Underneath is an entry for his own son John (1832) Boorman and Rachel (1834) Boorman, son and daughter of John and Charlotte Boorman. (Their tragic brother Mark was later and registered in 1838 under the new system brought out in the UK.)”
On 22 Dec 1857 when John was 25, he married Mary Ann WITHERDEN in Tilden Baptist Chapel, Smarden, W Ashford, Kent, England. Born on 15 Mar 1829 in Rochester, Kent, England. Mary Ann died on 23 Sep 1897; she was 68. Buried abt 1897 in St Michael & All Angels Churchyard, Hartlip, Kent, England.

- Daughter of Thomas Witherden (abt 1790 Kent - 15 Feb 1837 Biddenden Kent) and Lydia Hope (1792-1873), who were married 17 Mar 1810 in Biddenden Kent. MI listing for Mary Ann’s parents:"WITHERDEN, H, 499, In memory of / Thomas WITHERDEN / of Great Batchelor Biddenden / who departed this life / February 15th 1837 / aged 48? years / also Lydia his wife / who died June 29th 1873 / aged 81 years / they left surviving 6 sons and 6 daughters / the memory of the just is blessed Prov 10"

- from another researcher: She is buried with husband John Boorman in St Michael and All Angels Church Hartlip. They were from non-conformists family but for some reason were buried in CofE graveyard at the church.

- Website: britishnewspaperarchives shows a Report in Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald, Saturday 31 January 1880 which reads:
BENENDEN
'A FARMER AND HIS SON ACCIDENTALLY POISONED - SHOCKING OCCURRENCE - A very sad occurrence has taken place in this parish.  A few days since Mr Mark Boorman, a highly respectable farmer, feeling somewhat indisposed, asked his wife to fetch him some flour of brimstone, which they had in the house.  He mixed some of it with treacle and took a portion.  One of his children, a little boy between two and three years old, also helped himself to some of the mixture.  Mr Boorman shortly became sick, and, thinking it was the effect of his indisposition, went out into the air to recover himself.  Violent vomiting, however, ensued, which the medical gentleman called in could not allay, and on the third day Mr Boorman died.  The little boy, who was attacked in a similar manner, died a few hours subsequently.  An inquest has been held, and the evidence showed that on the same shelf as the brimstone, and in a similar vessel, there was a quantity of an arsenical compound used in sheep-dressing, and the two articles being similar in colour, Mrs Boorman had brought her husband the poison by mistake - A verdict of 'Accidentally poisoned' was returned.'

- Another reseacher shows this Mark Boorman (1838-1880) as the son of Mark Boorman (1808), and marrying Jane Hosmer in 1863 - see http://www.alton.demon.co.uk/genealogy/d0001/g0000003.html#I958. Lists 7 children: Marianne Lydia, Mark, John, Patty, Harriet, Jane and Emily [this varies slightly from other sources. Others also show 7 children, but instead of Marianne Lydia (1867-1937) and Patty (), they show Charlotte and Martha; birth order different]
On 31 Oct 1863 when Mark was 25, he married Jane HOSMER in Bethel Baptist Chapel, Maidstone, Maidstone Reg Dist, Kent, England. Born abt 1841 in Headcorn, Kent, England. Jane died aft 1911; she was 70.
