RESEARCH NOTES
- There are currently at least 2 different theories out there regarding this Thomas’s facts and family:
1) Thomas Boorman (1747 Biddenden - 1825 Tenterden/Sandhurst), married to Elizabeth Godden?, and son of Thomas Boorman [1722- 1797] and Elizabeth Badcock [who married 1753].
2) Thomas Boorman (1752 - 1825 Cranbrook), married to ???, son of Jonathan Boorman and Sarah

Theory #1
- Thomas was born 26 Jul 1747 Biddenden [don’t know primary source] well before his supposed parents’ marriage in 1753, so does he belong to this family? Or was he from a previous marriage? Another researcher comments: “I have queried myself and tried to prove whether or not Thomas Boorman b.1747 is the son of Thomas Boorman b.1722 and Elizabeth Badcock, or if he comes from another Boorman?  The consensus seems to be that it is right but as more records come on line I am hoping to try and prove it one way or the other.”
- 11 children listed (1773-1797) by another researcher
- 4 children (Sophia, Saml, Charlotte and Mary) of Thomas and Elizabeth Boorman listed in “PARTICULAR BAPTIST,SANDHURST BY CRANBROOK,KENT,ENGLAND”, batch C09168-1, the same location of 2 baptisms for children of William and Mary Boorman (Copping, Elizabeth). We believe these Thomas and William were brothers, both children of Thomas Boorman and Elizabeth Badcock.
- Was he buried in Sandhurst as per another researcher? According to wikipedia and a map: The village of Sandhurst is in Kent near the border with East Sussex. It is situated very close to [NW of] Bodiam. It is located on the A268 near the villages [SSW] of Hawkhurst and [NW of] Northiam. Sandurst in SW of Rolvenden and Tenterden [15km? away] and is S of Cranbrook. Sandhurst is in the borough of Tunbridge Wells [ ??? Tunbridge Wells is quite a distance away].
from familysearch: “SANDHURST (St. Nicholas), a parish, in the union of Cranbrooke, hundred of Selbrittenden, Lower division of the lathe of Scray, W. division of Kent, 7 miles (S. W. by W.) from Tenterden. There are places of worship for Baptists and Wesleyans.” Sandhurst parish records not indexed.
So why would he be buried in Sandhurst if he died in Tenterden???
No MI found in Sandhurst at: http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/MIsSandhurst/01.htm#Index
nor for Tenterden: http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MI...den/MIsTenterden.htm

Theory #2
- possible burial- supports theory #2 above, at odds with theory #1:

RESEARCH NOTES
If this is the John that married Esther:
- John & Esther ... are believed to have emigrated to the USA (Albany) around 1796.
- according to another researcher: Went to America in 1796. Letter exists sent to brother Benjamin Boorman.

- 1796: a letter from a John Boorman, dated May 1796 in New York, to his brother Benjamin back in Staplehurst [transcription received from another Boorman researcher in Jan 2013]. Based on location, date, and his mention of Esther, assume this is the same John Boorman we had some emails about earlier. Letter talks about the advantages of living in America compared to England: religious freedom, less taxes (based on property), freedom to take up business (and again in case of failure), “profession and possession of religion is respected” and sentiment not ridiculed, and better climate…. Bought farmers wheat in Albany near York at a cheaper price, for milling …. “When I was at Maryland we had a great deal of conversation about the propriety of purchasing slaves;” He seemed in favour of educating and enforcing the freeing of slaves, although he considers them to be “an ignorant idle thieving set” so they would first to have “the principles of morality instilled into them”…. Disadvantages in America: unevenness of country and prices of provisions. … Doesn’t plan on moving back to England, but perhaps will return for a visit. Considering investing with friends in land in northwest NY state to establish an English settlement / township.. … The final paragraph says:
“milling goes on pretty briskly. I have cleared about as much as it cost me coming over to America – please to inform my kinsman Boorman his son Denman is settled about forty miles back of Woopers [Coopers?] town and 30 miles from the Deleware river – in Ulster country, Rochester township; I forwarded the two letters I received with your packet; I saw John Denman the beginning of January; I did not know where they lived before; say they have cleared about 8 acres of land which is pretty good and sowed some wheat, built him a house and says there’s no fear of living, no rent to pay for seven years; then 1s6d per acre for as long as the world stands. They was all well, has taken 200 acres of land on an everlasting lease. Must conclude as my paper won’t admit of more. I wish to know what’s become of Brother James as he don’t write, nor you say a word about him; Brother Thomas I was a little astonished at your letter, but when I can find a place that I think will suit you will let you know. Esther joins with me in duty and love to all, father and mother, sisters and brothers, uncles and aunts, from your affectionate brother John Boorman.
PS When you write again please to fill your paper. When you write again please to direct c/o Mr Samuel Dendy, No 42 Beaver Street, New York”

- 1797: from a 1999 letter from Connie Boorman, Headcorn, Kent: "I remembered the letter which Leonard Maquire sent me from a collection of "The Browne" American letters 1794-1831. I have read these through again and in the letter to me he says John Boorman and his wife esther had 3 children Esther, Mary & James, no mention of Esther's maiden name or dates for the children. The letter is written by the eldest daughter Esther to Ann Billingshurst 14th Dec 1797 from New York. She says her father had died and they were staying in New York. She mentions Mr & Mrs Denman and their log cabin and the farm and the bad time they were having. They had moved to more remote parts. As a postscript she puts James desires me to present his best respects to you and Nancy. I am happy to say he has got a place much to the satisfaction of us all."

- a Boorman Family chart from Ditching England says this John s/o Thomas and Elizabeth (Babcock) married an Esthere and died in 1797 [rather than 1821]; had 3 children Esther Mary and James, “to America”
John married Esther. Born ca 1755.
They had the following children:
84i.
Esther BOORMAN (ca1775-)
85ii.
Mary BOORMAN (ca1777-)
86iii.
James BOORMAN (ca1780-)
33. Sarah BOORMAN / BADCOCK (Thomas BOORMAN4, William3, Thomas2, William1). Born in 1752 in Staplehurst, England. Christened on 15 Oct 1752 in Staplehurst, Kent, England. Sarah died in Hawkhurst, Kent, England, on 25 Sep 1829; she was 77. Buried abt 1829 in Tilden Baptist Church, Smarden, Kent, England.

“To children of brothers Thomas Boorman & James Boorman & sister Sarah Ballard widow”

- 1835: Sarah’s willl probated 23.10.1835

RESEARCH NOTES
- one researcher reports that Sarah married twice with children by both husbands:
1. by Samuel Heath: Rachel, Elizabeth, Jesse
2. by John Ballard: George b 1798 d 24.4.1868, Isaac and Sarah Ballard g-d Elizabeth
- same researcher is descended from Sarah (b.1752) who first married Samuel Heath: “my line is definitely down this one”
- as Sarah was born in 1751/2, not solid on Thomas Boorman (b1722) being the one who married Elizabeth Badcock in 1753 - although his will mentions wife Elizabeth but no other name.

On 25 May 1780 when Sarah was 28, she first married Samuel HEATH in Biddenden, Kent, England. Born in 1747. Samuel died in 1788; he was 41. Buried abt 1788 in Tilden Baptist Church, Smarden, Kent, England.

Executors: Nephew Barham Boorman, Gent of Tenterden (surviving executor as of probate) and
John Brown, Saddler and Ironmonger of Headcorn [the name Brown sometimes appears as Browen and Browni]

1) Benjamin's wife Jemima [Parks] receives household goods, plates, china, linen and furniture
with remainder in trust to pay debts, using interest earned to pay his wife an income semi-annually.

2) Upon the death of his wife [Jemima nee Parks, who probably died in 1834 just before Benjamin - his date not known - so this could have happened earlier than later]:

A sum of 900 pounds was to be given to [assumed to be nieces and nephews on the Parks [Jemima's] side of the family], to be equally divided between all and every:
- children of Thomas Parkes [Sr] of Headcorn
aforesaid EXCEPT his son [children?] Thomas [Jr] and Jemima Parks *** now the Wife of William Boorman AND
- children of John Parks late of Headcorn aforesaid Bricklayer deceased AND
- children of Mary the Wife of Thomas French of Chatham in the said County Shipwright AND
- children of Keziah the Wife of John Mitchell of Maidstone in the said County Laborer

3) All the residue and remainder of the trust monies to be given to the Boorman relatives,
equally divided between:
- the children of brother Thomas Boorman AND
- the children of brother James Boorman
AND
- the children of sister Sarah Ballard widow

EXCEPT Edward Shirley and William Shirley the two sons of Esther Boorman the
Daughter of James Boorman now Mrs Shirley
who each received 80 pounds instead and
EXCEPT Benjamin Boorman son of the said James Boorman who received 80 pounds instead and
EXCEPT John Boorman son of the said James Boorman who received 100 pounds instead

Adjustments required to the following shares:
- DEDUCT 75 pounds from share of John Boorman the son of his Brother Thomas Boorman and
- DEDUCT 75 pounds from share of Rachell Boorman the Daughter of his Sister Sarah
Ballard formerly Rachell Ballard

The intent was to give each of them 75 pounds less than other Residuary Legatees.
Deducted amounts were to be added back into to the residuary trust monies.

Money to be awarded when each turned the age of 21. As not all names are listed, it is not known
how many were alive to share the inheritance, nor what amount was received by each (with 3 exceptions).

[*** Benjamin Boorman’s wife Jemima’s older brother Thomas Parks Sr married twice, and had a son Thomas Jr by his first wife. If the other Jemima mentioned in Ben’s will was Thomas Jr’s wife, her maiden name would most like NOT have been Parks. But another (probably less accurate) interpretation of this will is that this other Jemima Parks (who married William Boorman) was instead a daughter of Thomas Sr and half sister of Thomas Jr. An 1801 baptism entry for Jemima, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, would fit this scenario. Notice that exact relationships are not always specified in the will - eg: how was Thomas Parks Sr related to Benjamin's wife Jemima?.]

RESEARCH NOTES
- Couldn’t find a death notice for Benjamin, so assume 1834 based on probate date (22 Jan 1835) - presumably just after his wife Jemima?

No ancestors for Jemima.
- assume no children of his own as he left his estate to his nieces and nephews.

- assume this is the Benjamin buried in the Methodist churchyard, Headcorn Kent, although gravestone very hard / impossible to read

- Jemima was illiterate at the time of her marriage and made her mark in the church records.

- 1834 a notice in The Kentish Gazette dated 10 Jun 1834 in the deaths column "At Headcorn, aged 72, Mrs Boorman, wife of Mr Benjamin Boorman, late of Staplehurst."

- ** [residence in 1841]: Peasridge or Pound Farm: From British History Online, County of Kent, originally published in 1798, written by Edward Hasted) <http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=63397>: (Upper) Peasridge, also known as Pound Farm, was a manor in Frittenden, Kent, owned by the Badlesmere family. During the reign of King Edward II (1307-1327) Bartholomew de Badlesmere was charged with treason [he sided with the King's enemies, and Badlesmere's wife would not admit the Queen (Isabella) to the Badlesmere's castle] – the King captured the castle, and Badlesmere was hanged, drawn, and quartered, and his head put on the Burgh Gate at Canterbury. As a result of all this, Peasridge manor was forfeited to the crown. However, Badlesmere's son, Giles, soon had the manor restored to him by the next king, Edward III. One of Giles' sisters married John de Vere, Earl of Oxford, then inherited Peasridge after Giles died in 1338. De Veres held title to the property until the reign of King Henry VI when it was sold to St. Leger, who later sold it to Lone of Lancashire. Subsequently it went to John Weston, clothier, in the 1600s and that family owned it until the manor was sold to Joseph Wetherden and then to Thomas Oliver; the latter was the owner at the end of the 1700s. By 1841, our family of "Boormans of Gloversville/Broadalbin [NY]" was farming at Peasridge/Pound Farm.

- from a private researcher: James Boorman (~1761 – ~1845) seems to have a connection to Little Moatenden (Mottenden) where Rachel Boorman Fullagar (1802-1889) reportedly was born. In histories of Kent, James Boorman (now known to have lived ~1761 – ~1845) is described as "of
Mottenden." Mottenden (now usually spelled Moatenden, and the site of a priory established
in 1224), is the farm next door to Little Moatenden, and undoubtedly both were once part of
the same estate. The Mottenden connection for the senior James Boorman is found in a 1894
book by Bernard Burke that is available on-line:
"He [Samuel Cotton] m. in the parish church of Maidstone, co. Kent, about 1817, Lydia,
daughter of James Boorman, Esq. of Mottenden, co. Kent, and sister of Thomas Boorman,
Esq. also of Mottenden . . ."

This source also states that Lydia Boorman and Samuel Cotton arrived in South Australia in 1849.

- from a 1952 letter from AE Mead to Wm Fullagar:
“I have the burial of a James Boorman (1761-1845) of Frittenden & wife Mary (1764-1844) of Frittenden who had 4 sons & 4 daughters mentioned on page 185 “Memorials of Smarden” (1886) by Rev Haslewood, whose burials are in the Smarden Church Yard but I believe this couple are the next older generation than James Boorman the grandfather of Jane Judge Boorman of Gloversville NY. I have always been interested in obtaining the names of these 4 sons & 4 daughters but to this writing have been unable.”

- a Boorman Family chart from Ditching England says this James (1761-1845), s/o Thomas and Elizabeth (Babcock), married to Mary Wood (1764-1844) and lists 2 children: Esther m George Cotton to America (no dates), and Benjamin (1792-7).

RESEARCH NOTES
- sources agree that a William married Mary Copping 2 Oct 1787 Biddenden, but vary on both their deaths and who their 4 or 5 children were (Sarah, Copping, Elizabeth, Mary and William) vs (William, Ann, Mary and Alfred) - William’s parents also vary - Thomas Boorman & Elizabeth Badcock or perhaps the confusion is due in part to ...

- There are 2 Williams close in age that each married a Mary:
1) William Boorman (1757-1825) m Mary Bowles (1763-1827), 1 Jan 1783 Staplehurst; 12 children listed; William s/o John boorman (1727-1807) and Elizabeth Mockett (1733-1800)
AND
2) William Boorman (1757-1836) m Mary Copping (1768-1848),2 Oct 1787 Biddenden; 5 children listed; Willliam s/o Thomas Boorman (1722-1797) and Elizabeth Badcock (1723-1801)

Another source has William #2 who married Copping with 4 children (attributed to #1 above), s/o Thomas Boorman & Elizabeth ???. Parents of father Thomas are different: John Boorman (b Staplehurst)and Ester Meopham (b Sutton Valence) - reportedly married 9 Jul 1695 St Margarets Canterbury) - rather than William Boorman and Sarah Chapman

- this is probably not the right William who wrote a will in 1802, if he died in 1836?
