From other researchers:
- “Thomas Compton was born in 1795 [the year his grandfather Thomas died], the firth [fifth?] child and eldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth. The Comptons still possessed their Middlecot House and their farms at The Lains and Thruxton Down.... The houses still contained a lot of young children. This Thomas had an aunt of 15 and an uncle even younger, along with his own sisters .... people had servants in those days ... Even in 1851, when the land had shrunk to 200 acres, Thomas himself employed fourteen people on it and the family of five Comptons and a relation of Eliza’s, Harry Morrant, had a cook, a housemaid and a stable helper.

“Europe had been horrified by the French Revolution and there may have been those who wondered if the same could happen in England. The Napoleonic War had begun and a certain Miss Austen was writing novels in Chawton in East Hampshire. Some of the people in her books could have been very like some of our Comptons, the officers and young women of accomplishment as we read in the section on Ann Childeroy.

“When Thomas was 35 in 1830 he married Eliza Morrant from Abbotts Ann. Thomas and Eliza had seven children. In addition, Thomas had a daughter Ellen with Mary Annetts of Thruxton - she was born in 1834.

“After his wife died in 1853 of cholera, the widower Thomas was getting on in years. We do not really know much about him, and what we have been told is rather negative. “My grandfather had a carriage and pair, our father used to tell me, and hunted regularily 3 days a week. I am afraid he drank port a lot the rest of the time, let his affairs slide and lost most of his money”, so my grandfather wrote in his notes. By 1860 the Lains had been sold to the Marquess of Winchester and was rented out to Henry and Jane Paine who had an additional 200 acres on top of what Thomas had there. Thomas and family had moved into Thruxton Down Farm where the 1861 census notes them down as Thomas and three of his children: Fanny aged 28, Thomas 24, Sarah 21, and George 18, as well as his granddaughter Eliza Fanny Reeks who was 4. A nurse (or nanny) and a cook completed the household.”

- Thomas died on Sep 13 1863 and was buried with Eliza 4 days later. His will is a typical Victoria one, full of repetitions. It is curiously similar in style to that of his cousin Thomas Compton of Prince Edward Island who died a little earlier. Our Thomas left his house, farm macinery including a “thrashing machine”, farm stock and household property to Thomas Henry Edward, his eldest son. The estate was valued at “under 5000 pounds”.

- Inherited share of estate from Uncle George.

On 2 Jun 1830 when Thomas was 34, he married Eliza MORANT in Abbots-Ann, Hampshire, England. Born in 1805 in England. Eliza died in 88 Piccadilly, St George Hanover Square Reg Dist, London, England, in Oct 1853; she was 48. Buried in 1853 in Amport, Hampshire, England.

From other researchers:
- ANCESTRY: contains the Gale and Etwall families. The gales were descended from John Pitman, Lord of the Manor of Quarley, although he did not own Quarley, it belonged to the Brothers of St. Katherine. The Etwalls came from Bishops Cannings, Wiltshire. William Etwalls was the Rector of Quarley from 1660 to 1718 and died aged 87. His sister Katherine married Christopher Gale.

- Eliza Morrant from Abbotts Ann was the eldest daughter of John and Elizabeth Anne Morrant. Eliza brought with her an interesting heritage. Her ancestry included members of the Gale family who descended quite certainly John Pitman of Quarley. Also the Batts of Kimpton and the Etwalls.

- In October 1853 Eliza went up to Town to visit a relation. This was on the 16th. The relation in question was Frances Compton Nixon, a descendant of Thomas’ aunt Ann Childeroy Dare. Eliza died at 88 Piccadilly and the body was brought back to Amport for burial behind dthe altar tombs of the borebears. She died from “English cholera, peritoneal inflammation and exhaustion”. There was a sever outbreak of what was known as Asian cholera in London in 1853-4. Today it is called shigella dysentry. Thomas had a memorial put up on the north wall of the church rather marking where one sits if there for a service!

From other researchers:
- Inherited part of estate from his Uncle George. No further record.

- Edmund and George [sons of Thomas and Elizabeth] married Marianne and Jane Buyatt respectively.

- George was a brewer in the 1851 census. By 1861 he was working as farm bailiff for his brother Thomas. Things were really going downhill. George and Jane had five children: Mary Elizabeth, George Frank, Childeroy, Jane, and Timothy. The three sisters are buried in the new part of Amport churchyard. Their stone proclaims them as being the daughters of George Compton of Middlecot. Forget-me-nots grow on their grace in true Victorian fashion. Of their children none married. Their line stopped in 1924.
