Easy to confuse the generations here with repeated Sarah and Eliza names.]

From other researchers
- Thomas and Sarah had a rather unproductive family. Only Albert (Harry) had any children. It is from the surviving sons that the Hampshire Comptons descend, although none of them live in Hampshire today (2006?).

- After Thomas Sr. died in 1863, Thomas Jr. continued to live at Thruxton Down, farming as best he could with reduced land and the general problems the agricultural community was suffering from.

- 1863 Thomas Henry Edward Compton was co-executor of his father’s will.

- 1866 - He met and married Sarah Parham. They were to have7 children.
Marriages Jun 1866 (4 on page):
Compton Thomas H E Warminster 5a 298
Parham Sarah Warminster 5a 298

- Thomas must have been a good man. He took great interest in his sister Eliza’s children after her death in 1868. He helped two of them through medical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital where one of his sons also went.

By 1871 the Comptons had moved to Andover and were living at Elvin House, High Street (built of soft golden stone, it is still there although now a business). Thomas had abandoned farming and was now a corn, seed and coal merchant.

1881 Census, shows Thomas and Sarah at home at Elvin House with Edith, Fanny, Caroline, Catherine and their two servants. Thomas was away in Lymington where he attended the scholastic establishment run by Willam Murdoch, a native of Banffshire.

1884: bankruptcy struck and the Comptons lost Elvin House and various other buildings.

1993: Sarah died and was buried in the new part of Amport churchyard across the road. The family was now living at Bridge House, but further bankruptcy in Sept 1896 took that away as well as a cottage, stabling, stores and a 12-quarter malthouse. This meant the debts paid off and the possibility to settle again, this time at The Firs on Weyhill Road. It is believed that this final catastrophe occurred because Thomas had stood as a guarantor for a friend and had been let down.

Thomas eventually moved to London, to 2 Fitzallen Road, Finchley, where he died. He left only 463 pounds. This was a far cry from the days of his GG Grandfather with his land and investments in the East India Company. He was buried with Sarah and with Edith who had died in 1909. Their monument is a cheap cross with lead pop-in lettering which has largely also popped out. It is being engulfed by a laurel hedge and is beyond recovery.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- Thruxton is a small village in the north-west corner of Hampshire, England. Situated just off the A303, five miles west of Andover it is a picturesque village with a Manor House, thatched cottages, two public houses, a parish church and a village green (not forgetting the nearby race track and airfield). - http://www.thruxtonvillage.com/ - Google maps shows Thruxton Down on the other side of Thruxton Airport than the village (all along A303), and closer to Cholderton (on crossroad A338).

From other researchers:
- married J T Westropp R. N.
- Sarah Maria (1840 - ) married John Thomas Westropp in 1870 at Thruxton. Their three children were Berkeley George, Gale and Phoeb Maud. The 1881 census has Sarah living with the first two in London. Presumably John was at sea.

[NOTE: the above Eliza Morant Compton (whose mother was Eliza Morant) had a younger sister also named Sarah Maria Compton who might have been named after their Aunt Sarah Maria Dowley - not sure of the exact connection here, but perhaps her aunt’s maiden name was Morant? Easy to confuse the generations here with repeated Sarah and Eliza names.]
In 1870 when Sarah Maria was 30, she married John Thomas WESTROPP in Thurxton, Amport, Hampshire, England.

John was in the Navy and was the son of Lieutenant Berkeley Westropp. The Westropp family came from County Limerick and were rather grand though decayed as such families often were.
They had the following children:
