From other researchers
- Thomas (1869-1936) hopefully benefitted from a spell at boarding school. He was obviously bright and did well in becoming a doctor after training at St Barts. After qualifying he moved to Harefield in Middlesex where he lived and worked from The Poplars. In the 1920s he moved to Bognor Regis, and then to Aldwick where he lived at Simmonscourt, Aldwick Gardens.

- Somewhere along the line he met and married Amelia Jane Fenn, a widow with a daughter, Marjorie. Photographs taken before WWI show here to be a pleasant woman and Thomas rather more like his mother than his father, who had a long high-cheekboned face. Thomas was one of the Comptons known to have worn spectacles.
- Married Mrs. M. Fenn.

- 1935 Thomas died at home on 24 May 1935. He left 1891 pounds 12s 6d to Amelia.
In Q4 1905 when Thomas was 35, he married Amelia Jane FARLEY in St George Hanover Square Reg Dist, Middlesex, England. Born in Q1 1863 in Chertsey Reg Dist, Surrey, Englamd. - Amelia Jane Fenn, was a widow with a daughter, Marjorie, when she married Thomas Compton. [Marjorie as a granddaughter through son Arthur Fenn] [no children listed in census, no birth registrations for the surnames Fenn and Farley]
- Another tree on ancestry [Roberts Family Tree by RuthMorgan80] says Amelia Jane Farley 1862-1954 had a son Arthur G Fenn 1891-1968 [baptism record shows proof of parents]

Why did they both have the last name Fenn, as her first marriage wasn’t registered until 1894?

From other researchers:
- She never married (Caroline was the only daughter that did).

- Fanny (1876-1968) lived the longest, surviving into her nineties. Or she died in 1939.
She seemed to have been the sister who kept an eye on the others. Sometime in her youth she went to Germany as a governess, the big adventure in heer life. She used an odd expression “tolls” for anything sweet like a kitten. It occurred that it came from the German as in “ein Tolles Ding”, something nice, fun etc. The word “anywhen” also seems to have been a Compton one. Fanny went to the East, to China. Most of her photograph album is occupied by people leaning over the railing of a ship looking at the view, or reclining in chaises longues. She had a number of objects from China such as large blue-and-white porcelain bowls, soapstone carvings and other items. It is possible that they came from her mother’s brother Albert who was in the Navy...

- As she got older she became very bowed and would look up at one through her specs, another spectacled Compton. One day the gradfather clock overbalanced onto her and pinned her down until the milkman noticed the milk had not been taken in. She died a shile later in a nursing home. Fanny had moved to West Bognor quite early on, living at 10 Wood Street and then in Aldwick Road. She died intestate.
No Children.

From other researchers:
- She never married (Caroline was the only daughter that did).

- Catherine was a spinster who lived with her sister at 10 Wood Street, a rather dear little white-painted terraced house. She had problems with her mental health and suffered from melancholia. She is remembered as having stuck pins in a photo of her nephew Hugh’s wife Audrey. Not long after she was taken to Chichester where she died on 26 FEb 1939. She may have died at Graylingwell Hospital but their records do not got so far back.

From other researchers:
- Edmund Compton (1882 - 1935). Consular service, Brazil.

- Edmund was born at Elvin House on 26 Oct 1882. Where he went to school is not known, possibly a local school or the Comptons had a governess. Even in their impoverished state, the tiny wage of an employee would have been affordable also we do not know how much the Parham family helped them to manage. Not long after leaving school Edmund left for Brazil to begin his life in overseas commerce. He became the manager of a trading station on the Amazon. In the meantime he returned to England and was given a photograph album by his sisters for his birthday in 1909. “From Eff and Kath”. This he proceeded to fill with family photographs. He had an earlier one which shows us life around his trading station. Rather historical really. There are no wonderful Amazon Indians in feathers, but locals dressed in Western clothing.
-War broke oiut in 1914. The following year Edmund answered the call of his country and returned to Europe. He enlisted in the 3/28th Battalion London Regiment or the Artists’ Rifles. He was only there for 100 days because, due to his vast knowledge of Portuguese and Brazil, his King needed him over there for some special work. He was appointed dBritish Vice Consul in Pernambuco. Various letters drift between “tempporary”, Acting and actual Vice Consul. There is also a large screed in Portuguese.
- There he stayed until he received a letter “by His Majesty’s Command” to take up the post of Commercial Secretary (Third Grade) in Rio de Janeiro. This is signed by George R I. It is a wonderfully worded letter ending in “Given at Our Court of Saint James, the First day of December in the Year of Our Lord One thousand Nine hundred and Eighteen and in the Ninth year of Our Reign”. Wording still in use since the Middle Ages.
- Of course, being a commercial secretary (third grade) is not enormously important. Had Edmund not fallen ill and become increasingly in need of sick leave, he might have been able to stay in his beloved Brazil and risen a little bit in the ranks..
- In 1922 he was recuperating in the bracing air of Weston-super-Mare. In 1926 he entered the Royal Star and Garter Home at Richmond because the paralysis he was now suffering necessitate this. All in all he was there or at the Sandgate Home until Dec 15, 1935 when he died. The main causes of death were septicaemia and pyelonephritis, not a very pleasant death. He was cremated at Golders Green.
- Patients remember him for his sense of humour, “a merry twinkle in his eye”, his love of the English coiuntryside and his great charm, a man who radiated friendliness, as a Christian who lived his faith. There is a photograph of him in a wheelchair looking far more like his father than in earlier pictures. The Comptons seem to have gone in for high cheekbones. Our legacy from Edmund are the albums with the Brazilian photographs and dthose of his brothers and sisters. Sadly he never wrote down who was who. A process of elimination has helped to sort out most of them. They were a close-knit family who took their summer holiday together at a well-known seaside resort, familiar to us in later years.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- a more detailed biography available in Catherine’s book
- can’t find his second marriage in England (FreeBMD) under either name - as he was likely living in Bombay when Millicent died, and as one of his later children was born in Hong Kong, Harry and Mimi were likely married abroad.
