“The recent death of Nurse Mabel Elizabeth Noake has been deeply felt by many New Zealanders. This valiant lady was born in this country on March 22, 1874, and was the daughter of Colonel Noake. She left her home country to live in England on the Thames Estuary, and nursed in a military hospital during the last war. In this war she has done her bit in various ways, but the most colourful epoch she lived through is probably during the evacuation of Dunkirk, where she helped fishermen in their arduous job at the turn of the tide. She never rested for three days.
“The war left her bereft of everything and suffereing from a spinal injury. She returned to New Zealand and for some time resided with her sister living in Mount Eden. Another grief was to follow, for her sister died shortly afterwards leaving Nurse Noakes most of her possessions. SInce that day this valiant lady has toured the Dominion, lecturing everywhee on the Dunkirk evacuation and the glorious ipart played by cool-headed, stout-hearted British fisherment, who accoring to her narrative, were greatly responsible for preventing any attempt at immediate invasion In these lecture tours she was joined by Madame Forham, who looked after the musical part of the programme and whose voice delighted the many audiences.”
