- My GG Grandfather [Richard BAnbury], another son of Richard and Mary, born 1828, arrived here [Knox Co. OH USA in 1832] at the age of four… then when he was about 20 years old he went to California for the Gold Rush. ... [when] my younger brothers, Robt Ed., b. 1945, was a youngster he was looking at Great Grandmother Hallie Armstrong Banbury Mansbridge’s Bible and there was a letter in it. My brother asked my mother what it said. She read [as he remembers], “I have arrived in the Gold Field of California safely. All of the men I travelled with died along the way. I will seek my fortune and return to you in ???? year.” This was a letter from Richard Banbury to his parents, Richard & Mary. Son Richard did very well in the gold fields and held responsible positions as water manager. He also held numerous mining claims some with his future brother-in-law, James Kirby, as well as with Dennis Daugherty and his brother James. Dennis Daugherty was married to a Margaret Kirby. Dennis died, Margaret went back to Iowa to her family, then returned and married Richard Banbury. Richard kept his word and returned to Danville, OH in 1868-69 and at the age of about 43, retired. We find in his father’s Will that he gave the majority of his estate to his “other” sons but reserved a five acre garden for his son, Richard, with a statement that this five acres was the man’s pride and all that he would need. This tells me that, while the other sons did very well in farming and business in the Danville area, son Richard had no financial needs.

- Richard did do well….. He was a water agent which was a very powerful position because he determine who got water and who didn't!!!! It was absolutely necessary to have this water for the hydraulic mining that was practice. It was environmentally a DISASTER! And eventually outlawed…. But while used, water was king!!!!. In 1860 Richard was living in California and his real estate is recorded as $2,000 and his personal estate as $1000. Richard had several gold mines and was a partner in many, including Kirbys and Daughertys where he probably first met Margaret, who was married to Dennis Daugherty, who died just before the birth of their son, William D Daugherty.

After he married Margaret, he decided it was time to return to Ohio, and went home and basically retired at about the age of 40. He is sometimes listed as a farmer, but in his will he left his son a five acre garden plot, with a comment that the garden was the focus of all of his efforts.

Richard was 33 listed as Ditch Agent
