Fourth Generation
Family of William KERFOOT (3) & Elizabeth Bradley WILSON
8. George KERFOOT (William3, George2, Thomas1) . Born on 12 May 1796 in County Kilkenny, Ireland. George died in Cuckoo's Nest, Beckwith Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada, on 15 May 1853; he was 57. Buried in 1853 in Shillington Old Methodist Cemetery, 5th Line, Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada.

Irish records found by another researcher:
- 1814 Irish parish records: From ‘Marriages from Union of Mothel and parish of Dysert, 1811 on:
Dec 14, 1814, marriage by licence
of George KIERFOOT and Deborah SMYTH of Coolcullen

- 1816 Irish parish records: From ‘Protestant Inhabitants of the Union of Mothel and parish of Dysert, A. D. 1816’”
William and Elizabeth KIERFOOT & their children Anne, Thomas, Samuel and Eliza
[son George was already married]
George and Deborah KIERFOOT & son William

- 1817 Irish records: From ‘Return of Protestant Families preparing to emigrate from the Counties of Carlow and Wexford in the ensuing Spring, dated at Ross in November 1817’:
This was a list of 4,087 people including “George KERFOOD, farmer and mechanic, 3 in family” and, a page or so later, “Wm KERFOOT, 5 in family”, a good match for our George and William. William’s wife and other in-laws were from just across the Coolcullen River in County Carlow. This is reasonably consistent with the family tradition that the ‘Kerfoot party’ reached the Ottawa Valley in 1819.

- 2015: The Cuckoo's Nest looks a bit neglected and the farm has not been farmed for a long time. I would guess 100 acre farms are of little economic value these days. [implied not currently in Kerfoot hands]

Notes for SAMUEL KERFOOT:
Page 38 of 'A Pioneer History of the County of Lanark contains the following passage:
“William Kerfoot died in 1862 and was buried in the same cemetery on his own property, where his wife, Elizabeth, who lived to be 93, was also buried. William's son George [Family # 10] settled with his wife and two small children on Lot 15 of the second concession in the Cuckoo's Nest. Thomas Kerfoot [ Family # 11] located on lot 15 on the 1st concession.
“ William Kerfoot, endeavouring to seek wives for his many sons, made preperations and invitied to Canada a very stylish lady from the old land, Eliza Phillips. He informed his son Thomas that this lady would be his wife. Thomas, however, had other intentions, and before his prospective wife arrived in Canada he married Ann Tomlinson, the daughter of another pioneer William Tomlinson. When Eliza Phillips arrived William commanded son Samuel to step into the gap. And he did!* Samuels' wife was henceforth known by all the Kerfoots as "The Lady". They lived in the house built by William on the old [homestead?]
, a large frame building with a two tier veranda running the full length of the house and decorated with "gingerbread".”
