From other researchers:
- He came to Canada as a three year old boy in 1819. He was a tall spare man who wore a scanty brown whisker. He was quiet and well informed with a solid charcter that was typical of the Kerfoots. His father settled him on a farm in Montague Tp, Lanark Co about four miles form the village of Merrickville, on what is now called the Kilmarnock Road in 1840. He lived there for the next 30 years. In 1870 with his eight youngest children he moved to a farm of 200 acres three miles from Warwick Village. adjacent to the farm of his brother Thomas. That farm was sold in 1882 just before his daughter, Eliza's, marriage. Thereafter he lived with his daughter Deborah in the village of Watford.
[Merrickville and Smith Falls are on the south borders of Montague Twp, SW of Ottawa. Warwick and Watford are much farther SW at the foot of Lake Michigan, just west of London Ont .]

- A history of the area, The History of Vespra, quoted from his diary:
> Nov 1874- Burning heaps, roots and logs. George went to Barrie and bought five bags of apples at 65 cents a bag
> July 1875- John Kerfoot came up this morning and brought up the mowing machine. We fixed up scaffolds to put pulleys for hay fork
> July 187- Mr Geddes preached this morning. Horace and Mary went to Sunday School. John went to the English church and heard Fred Foyston preach. The boys, Harold and Horace, lost a swarm of bees.
> Dec 1875-George went to town with a load of hay, 2275 lbs in the load at $13.25 per ton.
> February 1882-Emma got Harold a pair of No. 11 boots for 90 cents and clothes for him and Horace. Emma got 22 cents for butter and 11 cents for egg.
> Mar 1885-I took 12 1/2 pounds of beef up to F. Jacobs this evening, six cents a pound and I gave him $1.50. We considered ourselves square with one another about threshing and haying. T. L. (Tom) Livingston took some elm lumber to Barrie and got 12 per thousand.

- His obituary read: William Kerfoot: was born in Coolcullen, Kilkenny County, Ireland, May 16, 1816, came with his parents to Canada in the year of 1819 and settled in the Township of Beckwith, Ontario. He was converted to God in the summer of 1832, under the minstry of Rev J. H. Huston. The work was genuine as his after life showed. He immediately united with the Weslan Methodists Church and continued a member onto his death (fifty-one years) and was a class leader in the church of his choice for eighteen years. Was married to Miss Mary Brownlee of Goulbourn on May 6, 1841 and settled in the Township of Montague near Merrickville. His wife died January 16, 1869 and left him with twelve children to mourn her loss. In the spring of 1870 he moved to Warwick with eight children the other four being settled. The twelve children are all still living and all are members of the Church. A few months before his death he sold his farm and built for himself a comfortable house in the Village of Watford where he intended to finish his days in retirement but he passed away to his rest after a few weeks illness on the 3rd April 1883 and was interred on the 5th in the Warwick Cemetery. A memorial sermon was preached in the church in which he was wont to worship by Rev T.S. Howard to a vast concourse of sympathetic friends. He was one of the pillars of the Church and died as he lived, peaceful and happy, By T.S. Howard.
On 6 May 1841 when William was 24, he married Mary BROWNLEE, daughter of Thomas BROWNLEE & Ann Nancy SHILLINGTON, in Bathurst Dist, Ontario, Canada. Born on 15 May 1823 in Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. Mary died in Montague Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada, on 16 Jan 1869; she was 45. Buried abt 1869 in Merrickville, Later Moved To The 5th Line Cemetery, Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada.

- Mary was the youngest of the party who immigrated to Canada. After living in Smith Fall's Ontario they moved to Stratford, Ontario. On James' and Mary’s marriage, James' father turned over to them the north half of Con 6 Lot30 It is likely that the children were born there and not right in Smiths Falls which is a mile or so south. James is listed as a class leader at Central Methodist Church, Stratford . His wife Mary, children along with the Read and Williamson families were all recorded on the Circuit Register of Members 1874

RESEARCH NOTES
- From another researcher: A book "A Kerfoot History: Canadian Branch" was researched by a teacher John Moore Morris and completed and published by his daughter Winifred Morris Mair in 1953….Three of the early members of the Shillington family married members of the Kerfoot family, and descendents of these three unions constitute a large proportion of the persons in the book.

"Some Success Stories in My Irish Research
From a talk by Ron Mann on March 17, 2012,
at the ‘St. Patrick’s Day meeting’ of the Kingston Branch" [see document for details]
On 24 Sep 1840 when Ann was 19, she married John S SHILLINGTON , son of Thomas SHILLINGTON & Barbara ROBINSON, in The Cuckoo’s Nest, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. Born on 13 Feb 1823 in Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. John S died in City View, Ottawa, Carleton, Ontario, Canada, on 1 Jun 1888; he was 65. Buried in 1888 in Shillington Cemetery, Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada.

- Son of Thomas Shillington (1777-1840) and Barbara Robinson (1780-1870)

- His nickname was Big John and he seems to have had not only the physical stature but the personality to match. He was the first of his family to have been born in Canada and his wife was the first of her family to have been born in Canada. The couple farmed the East one-half of Lot 12, 5th Concession, Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada.
John was born on that farm. John donated the acre of land that formed the 5th Line Cemetery. Both he and his wife Ann are buried there. There was also a church built there which was abandoned in 1877 when the present church was built in Munster. The house on the land remained until 1950 when it burned to the ground. After her her husband's death, John's mother, Barbara, lived with John and Ann. She lived until the age of ninty, a very old age for that era.

- The 1871 Census listed his age as 48, born in Ontario, a Wesleyian Methodist (as distinct from an Anglican Methodist) and a farmer. His household consisted of his mother, Barbara, his wife, Ann (49 years of age) and the seven children who were still at home; Ann (21), Mary (19) Sarah (16), George (14) Wesley (12), John (10) and Wiilliam (7). Sarah, George, Wesley, John and Willam were in school. They had one building in town, There was a Methodist church on their land. The farmed 500 acres, an enormous farm for that era. Their buildings consisted of two dwellings, a barn and 5 sheds, two carriages or sleighs, 2 wagons or sleds, one reaper, one horse rake, and a fanning mill. Of the 500 acres, 200 were under cultivation and 70 in pasture. They had 9 acres in spring wheat. They had a garden of one-quarter acre. Crops on hand consisted of 80 bushels of wheat, 30 bushels of buckwheat, 20 bushels of peas, They had 10 acres of potatoes and 1500 bushels on hand. They had 300 bushels of turnips. There was 50 acres in hay and 60 tons on hand. They had 10 bushels of apples. Livestock consisted of 3 horses, 12 milk cows, an additional 7 horned cattle, 48 sheep, 4 swine, 3 bee hives. They had 1000 lbs of butter, 40 pounds of butter and 200 lb. of wool. In addition during the year they had slaughtered 12 sheep and 11 swine. They also reported 30 cords of wood.

- The 1881 Census listed his age as 58, living with his wife Ann (59) with one soon William (17) still at home. All were listed as Methodists and born in Ontario.

- son of THOMAS SHILLINGTON and BARBARA ROBINSON
- His daughter Barbara left this account in her own handwriting: John Shillington was born on February 13th 1823 in the Township of Goulbourn, then an almost unbroken wilderness. The influences of a Christian home and godly parents prepared his heart for the good seed and in his 16th year, attending a camp meeting at a neighbouring farm, he waas converted to God. Received his first quarterly ticket from Rev. Geoge Goodson, May 1838 and from that time until his death was a loyal member and liberal supporter of the Methodist Chruch. He was married on the 24th September 1840 to Miss Ann Kerfoot of Beckworrth Tp who still lives. He was called Home very suddenly on the 1st of June 1888.
- Appropriately enough for such a personality, his tombstone in the 5th Line Cemetery is a tall cenotaph that completely dominates the modest cemetery. His tombstone stands as straight as the day it was erected in 1888

- From another researcher:
His father died in 1863 when Richard was 15. With his brother, Robert, they managed the farm with their mother. They used oxen. When the yonger brother went to Western Ontario in 1868 the farm passed from the Kerfoots. On marrying Mary Ann Miliken, they took their honeymoon in a lumber wagon without springs. They travelled to their new home, the Cuckoo Nest, the home of their Grandfather. They lived there for three years. On Sunday they walked four miles to Prospect Church. In 1866 Richard moved with his familty Montague Tp, north of Smith Falls, near the Milliken Homestead of his in-laws. He was a gifted music teacher. In these days before radio or TV, communites or even rural mail delivery, people depended on themselves for their entertainment and Richard's Singing School was very popular. The services of Richard were eagerly sought by the Mayberry district, a community six miles distant. When he protested that he was too busy building his barn the nieghbourhood supplied the lumber, if he would teach the school, an offer he accepted. The only instrument he had to teach them was a tuning fork. The system produced good sight readers of music. In 1906 they retired to Smith Falls with their daughter Ira. In 1949 their son erected two stained glass windows in Trinity United Church as a memorial to Richard and Mary where they had worshipped.
