RESEARCH NOTES:
- First names originally entered as Mary Ann; others show Mary Hannah
- Not sure of birth date - too close as it stands to her sister Gerturde. Late group baptism doesn’t help. If birth order is correct, she may have been born 1846 instead of 1844?
- Married name Green. Unable to find marriage record.
- Husband entered as Harry Green (source unknown); others say George.
- Did she marry George Creen and have sons Frank, Alfred and Charles?
- Note from Rose Hawthorne: I did find Mary Hannah Compton marrying George Green on the Island Register, under Descendants of Samuel Green. George Green is Third generation, number 9. They moved to New Brunswick after marriage, and lived in St. John. Mary Hannah and her 3 youngest children died in a Diptheria epidemic in 1885. There is also some info on the New Brunswick site. The oldest son Frank (Verner) married and came to Victoria.
On 20 Jul 1872 when Mary Hannah / Ann was 25, she married George GREEN , son of Charles Tabor GREEN (1813-1880) & Phoebe Edith LINKLETTER (1814-1857), in St Eleanors, Prince Co, PEI, Canada. - 1906: in a 1906 letter from his second wife Margaret to her brother Charles Taylor in Malpeque, Lot 18, PEI:
“George sends you his loving sympathy and I know of no one that can enter into your feelings more. His youngest girl died on Apr 18th 1885, two little boys April 27 and on May 6 his eldest daughter and on the folliowng night his wife died. He was all alone in the house, was changing a poultice on her when she died. It was in the middle of the night and he has told me that he went out on the stoop and felt as if God and man had forsaken him. You know the neighbors were afraid of the diphtheria and scarlet fever and he could not get a nurse of any kind. When he returned from the double funeral to his lonely home, where of his three remaining boys one was quarantine in one ______ with scarlet fever and the eldest in another with diphtheria and he didn’t know where to look for any help. God brught him through it all and now he has such calm trusting faith.”

- Obituary of Captain George Green (Clipping from a Saint John newspaper, no name no date):
“Residents of the NOrth End and other parts of the city will read with regret of the death of Captain George Green which occurred last evening at his residence, 250 Millidge Avenue. Mr. Green, who was a member of the firm of Purdy and Green, lime burners, was stricken with paralysis on the 8th inst. He had been out doors just a few minutes before the stroke, attending to his usual business, and apparently was in good health. He never seemed to rally but sank gradually till he passed away yesterday.
“Captain Green was born in PE Island sixty-eight years ago. He came to New Brunswick when twenty-one years of age and had resided in the NOrth End ever since. So great wa the confidence felt by his neighbors in his business ability and probity of character that when three years ago he opposed Ald. McGoldrick he came within a very few votes of defeating the alderman from Stanley ward. Captina Green first engaged in the shipping business. He built the schooner J. W Scott and sailed in her as master in the coasting trade till thirty-five years ago when he sold out and went into the lime burining business with D. J. PUrdy.
“He was a prominent member of St. LUke’s church and was a stanch temperance man all his life. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Mary Ann (Hannah) Compton, a native of PE Island. She died on May 7, 1885. Three sons by this marriage survive: Frank C, and Alfred H of Nelson (B.C.) and Charles T. of this city. About eleven years ago, Captian Green married as his second wife MIss Margaret Taylor of PE Island who survives him. There are also three brothers: Major H Green of St. John; Wellington Green of Gran Lake; James Warburton Green of PE Island; and two sisters: Mrs. Arthur Craig of Springfield (Mass.) and Mrs. Yeaton of Brooklyn. Four half brothers and one half sister also survive. One of Captain Green’s sons, Alfred H., f Nelson (B.C.) arrived in the city on Thursday afternoon. The funeral will be on Sunday afternoon.”

- As published in the Pioneer [PEI newspaper[ 6 October 1880:
Compton & Webber’s furniture factory is on Central Street, a short distance north of the R.C. Church. The building is 2 ? storeys, and the machinery is driven by a 15 horsepower steam engine. The principal pieces of machinery consist of four turning lathes (three for wood and one for iron,) jig saw, planer, variety molder, dowelling machine, band saw, boring machine, circular saws, emery wheels, &c. One part of the building is used for drying room, where the wood is well seasoned before being put in use. This process adds greatly to the solidity of the work. The proprietors of this establishment appear to be thorough mechanics, and the materials used of the best kind. All kinds of furniture are made by them, from an article costing fifty cents to a room set worth two hundred dollars. They are at present putting up a large number of cheap hardwood chairs, which they sell at greatly reduced figures. These chairs are not only strong but very neatly built, and the object of selling them so low is with a view of stopping, if possible, the importation of those common pine bottom chairs into the country. In this we have no doubt they will succeed, or else buyers are very much in their own light; as we think one of these home-made chairs will out-last three of the imported ones, while the cost is about the same. Compton & Webber also add undertaking to their regular business. They keep constantly on hand, coffins and caskets of all sizes, and we understand they have lately supplied themselves with a hearse. We might add that their warehouse and show rooms are above the store of W.T. Burrows, on Water Street, where purchasers can examine their goods.

- 1923 death notice:
“Compton, H. A.
Island Farmer - 8 August 1923
It is our sad and deeply regretted duty to record in this issue the death of our esteemed old friend and business neighbor, Mr. H. A. Compton, who passed away at his residence in Summerside early last Saturday afternoon after a long and painful illness, which had practically confined him to his home for the past four years. The history of Summerside for the past half-a-century is bound up with his own record of activity in the political, social and business life of the town, in which he took the greatest interest, having been bandsman, fireman, Councillor and Mayor. Withal, he was a good sport, a boon companion, a true friend and an honored gentleman. Consequently he enjoyed an exceptionally wide circle of friends in all parts of the province who will join us in profound regret at his passing and in sympathy with his widow and family in their bereavement.
The late "H. A." as he will always be lovingly remembered by his old friends, was born in 1851 at St. Eleanors, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Compton, his mother before her marriage being Miss Sarah Davis Tanton. In 1865 he went to Charlottetown and served his time as a cabinet maker, later going out to California. In 1874 he returned home, married Miss Sophia E. Clark, of Charlottetown, and established in partnership with the late Mr. George Webber a cabinet making and furniture factory at Summerside, which for some years was one of the flourishing manufacturing industries of the province. Later an undertaking business was added to the furniture store, both of which are still carried on by his son, Mr. Keith Compton. During his active life, up to about nine years ago, he continued prominent in business and civic affairs. For fifteen years he served on the Town Council. He was elected Mayor of Summerside in 1904 and was returned us our premier citizen at the two succeeding elections and again in 1908.
There are left to mourn, besides a sorrowing widow, three sons and three daughters, to whom the sincere sympathy of the community is extended, namely: Frank, of New York; Bruce, of Calgary, Alta.; Keith, at home; Mrs. G. B. Hillis, of Halifax, N.S.; Mrs. A. E. MacPhail, of Edmonton, Alta.; and Mrs. Walter Callbeck, of Summerside; also one sister, Mrs. Geo. L. Webber, of Vancouver, B.C. The funeral is taking place this (Tuesday) afternoon, under the auspices of the Masonic Order, of which deceased was an old and honored member, to the People's Cemetery”

Compton, Mrs. Harry A.
Maple Leaf Magazine - March 1932, page 36, col. 2
One of Prince Edward Island's best-known and beloved women passed away early Thursday morning, January 28 in the person of Mrs. Sophia Compton, Summerside, after an illness of ten days. She was the wife of the late Harry A. Compton, former Mayor of that town, who died about nine years ago. Mrs. Compton became ill on the 18th. The following Monday her two daughters living in Halifax, Mrs. A. E. MacPhail and Mrs. George Hillis, arrived home and remained with their mother until the end. At home, also, when their beloved mother passed away, were her daughter Mrs. Walter Callbeck, and son, Keith Compton, both of whom reside in the town.
The deceased lady (formerly Miss Sophia Clark) was born in Charlottetown and removed many years ago to Summerside where she and her husband became prominent in the social, religious and charitable affairs of the town. Old timers will readily recall Mrs. Compton's charming voice at charitable entertainments. Every denomination and organization sought her services in arranging their programs, and never once did she refuse to assist in any worthy cause.
Knowing that her end was near, and being perfectly resigned, Mrs. Compton gave written instructions for hymns to be sung at house and church, the ministers who would conduct the services, and the pallbearers. Besides those mentioned above, the deceased is survived by two sons, Bruce Compton, Calgary, Alberta, and Franklin Compton, Verona, New Jersey; also one sister, Mrs. E. H. Webber, 217 School Street, Winter Hill, Mass., and one brother, William Clark, also residing in the United States.
The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended. Services at home were conducted by Rev. L. B. Campbell, assisted by Rev. C. J. St. C. Jeans. Rev. Mr. Jeans read the scripture lesson at the Trinity United Church and Rev. Mr. Campbell gave the address and spoke feelingly of the departed.

Tribute to the Life of an Esteemed Summerside Lady
"I.C.R.", (W. D. Taunton), a former Charlottetonian, writing in last Saturday's Halifax Herald, has the following interesting reference to the late Mrs. H. A. Compton and events connected with her life:
A very gracious lady, whose lite was closely identified with the past three-quarters of a century of Prince Edward Island history, passed away at Summerside recently. Mrs. H. A. Compton was a daughter of Peter and Mrs. Clarke of Charlottetown, where she was born in the late 70's. Charlottetonians of the old school will have pleasant memories of the fine choir of the then Prince Street Methodist Church, now Trinity United. Mrs. Compton, then Sophie Ducheman, was a member of that choir. She was a great singer. Seated near her was Bertram Moore. He was also a great singer, and their alto and tenor voices easily filled that great edifice.
Her grandfather was Watson Duchemin, a man of great musical talents. All his family was musical. Away back over half a century ago he built two church organs. I understand they are intact today and producing wonderful music. He was not an organ builder by profession. It was just a hobby with him. But he was a genius. For years he conducted a block manufacturing concern on Prince Street, close by the big Methodist Church. It was a prosperous concern, one of the industries of that city. It was the day of wooden ships and block making was a flourishing industry. Other lines of wood working were carried on. It was just about the time when it was evident to all the days of the wooden ships were coming to an end when some neighbor took out an injunction to restrain or curtail or abolish the noise caused by the machinery in Duchemin's factory. I guess law did the rest.
Well, I passed down along that way a couple of years ago and it was quiet enough, and I thought the noise, if it could be started up again, would be sweet music to a lot of people. I always understood Watson Duchemin was the discoverer of the ball bearing process which has revolutionized machinery.

The messages were very clear. Another brother, Frank, in New York, was in communication with the family by telephone. Mrs. Compton’s sister, Mrs. Webber of Boston, also expressed her love and sympathy in a personal telephone message. S.”
“Funeral Services - a large number of friends attended the funeral services for Mrs. H.A. Compton of Summerside, which were held on Saturday afternoon. there was a short service at the home at 1.30 conducted by Rev. L. B. Campbell assisted by Rev. Mr. Jeans. Rev.
