- 1893 obituary published in the Summerside journal, May 3, 1893, page 3 column #1:
Death has removed another prominent and familiar figure from our midst, in the person of Mr. Benjamin S. Mills, who died on Sunday last, at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. James Auld, Summerside. Mr. Mills was very highly esteemed in the community, where he was held in great respect, and his death is sincerely regretted. He was born in the County of Suffolk, England, in 1815, and came to this country in 1831, landing at Princetown. His brother William was here at the time, and he followed farming with him for awhile. He also traded in cattle, farm produce, etc., between Summerside and Miramichi. He afterwards built a mill at Rose Hill Farm, Lot 16. He then went to Chicago, and was there for some time during the early settlement of that place, after which he went west, crossing the prairie. Not caring much for the west, he returned and settled in Ontario, where he went into the milling business, being one of the firm of Mills & Holden. Later he came back to the Isalnd, and in 1849, married Virginia Frances, eldest daughter of the late Major Compton, St. Eleanors. Ater this he continued the milling business in Ontario for about five years, at the end which time, on account of ill health, he returned to the Island, locating at St. Eleanors, where he followed farming for a number of years. He then built a steam grist mill - the first in Prince County, if not on the Island - in Summerside but owing to ill health, he disposed of it, and resided here during the remainder of his life. Mr. Mills was Road Supervisor for Lot 19 during the Sullivan Administration and discharged the duties of this position in a most efficient and satisfactory manner. He was a member of King Hiram Lodge, A.F. & A.M. His funeral took place at 2 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday, with Masonic honours, to the cemetery of St. John’s Church, St. Eleanors, Rev. Thos. Lloyd of Kensington officiating. The pall bearers were Messrs. D. Rogers, M.P.P,, W, I Hunt, Jas Reilly, D. Montgomery, John Clay and C.B. Saunders. He leaves two sons, Holden C Mills, Summerside, and Hubert Mills, St Eleanors, and one daughter, Mrs. James Ault, Summerside.

- DEATH: age 78
- Benjamin died at the home of his son-in-law.
- BURIAL: Thomas Lloyd

RESEARCH NOTES:
- Last name variant spelling: Coaxs, Cotes, Coats...
- Mary was from Essex County [but born in Suffolk], England. She was the niece of William Coates who resided with the T. C. Compton Family for many years, teaching the children.
- LEGEND: brought out from Suffolk, England by her Uncle William Coates, who became a school teacher in St. Eleanor's PEI. [Originally thought her emigration date was 1827, same as for William Coates, but 1901 census says Mary was born in 1827 and emigrated 1847. William emigrated 1827 (cf. Memories, A Historic View of St. Eleanor’s), so “brought out” likely means“sent for” rather than “came with”] ...

- Mary may have had a brother or uncle, George Louis Coates, who died in 1862 in Essex, age 67 [should likely read 37] [This was Mary’s brother George as it matches the PEI obit.] information. - also found on freeBMD death index.

Take out the name Robinson (can’t search on middle initial) - 278 results in UK, including spelling variants, but only 2 in 1827. Baptism possible Suffolk location: According to the GenUKI online gazetteer, there are 5 [now 8] different parishes/locations in Suffolk that use the name All Saints, but thanks to the British Isles Vital Statistics Index (LDS film 918511 -1827 = Bishop's transcripts for the Archdeaconry of Suffolk, 1685-1875 Church of England. Archdeaconry of Suffolk ), Mary’s birth place has been narrowed down to All Saints and St Nicholas, South Elmham, Suffolk. GenUKI refers to this All Saints as ‘All Saints South’ (TM340820, old Genuki list) [also listed as both TM345826 South Elmham All Saints encompassing All Saints South Elmham , and TM329828 All Saints South Elmham] which is ~2 miles east of St Nicholas South Elmham (TM320820) [or 1.2 miles W TM326829 St Nicholas South Elmham or 0.2 miles WNW of St Nicholas South Elmham] and ~4 miles NW of Halesworth (TM380770). Holton (where her parents James and Sarah were married) is ~2 miles E of Halesworth.
- from GenUKI (Suffolk): "SOUTH ELMHAM ALL SAINTS, a parish in the hundred of Wangford, county Suffolk, 5 miles S.W. of Bungay, and 5 N.W. of Halesworth, its post town. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich, value with that of St. Nicholas annexed, £270. The church, dedicated to All Saints, is an ancient structure with a circular Norman tower and a beautiful arch at the S. entrance still perfect. The other parts of the church have been rebuilt at various dates. This and the following Elmhams give name to a deanery in the archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich. Sir R. Adair, Bart., is lord of the manor. - From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)

- St Johns Anglican Cemetery (St Eleanors) Transcript: Grave 54 lists just Harry C. and Mary R Compton (no dates). The next grave #55 (seems to be in the Compton section) has "?" as a surname and lists these 3 young girls. If the dates are accurately transcribed, I have trouble assigning them to Harry Albert and Mary R Compton, as follows:
- "Mary Eliza d. Nov 18 1845, Ae 10 mos" - therefore born Feb 1845 - our Mary Coates didn't come to PEI until Nov 1847, so this couldn't be her child. Or perhaps the printing was eroded to make dates indistinct and the transcribed date was wrong, or perhaps H.A. had an illegitimate child before Mary arrived, or the baby belongs to another family.
- "Margaret G., d. Sept 16, 1859 ae 5 yr, 8 mos" - therefore born Feb 1854. Harry Albert and Mary had a daughter Sara Hana born 7 Nov 1854 - cutting it close with 9 - 10 months between, but I suppose doable!
- "Elizabeth S., d. Sept 16, 1859, Ae 3 yr, 5 mos" - therefore born Apr 1856. Horace James Compton was born 2 Aug 1856, making it a tad difficult for Mary Coates to be the mother!.
I also checked the PEI baptismal index online - there were 7 Compton baptisms listed in all of PEI in the 1840s, and 40 in the 1850s, but I couldn't find any of these 3 girls listed among them. Either the baptismal records are incomplete, or we have the wrong surname.

- Hubert was a writer of early life in St. Eleanor's and wrote a series of articles for The Island Magazine, providing much information about the early history of St. Eleanor's. Efforts to obtain access to his diary, which was used as the basis for these articles, have so far been unsuccessful. Some articles were published in the Charlottetown Guardian, including one installment of “A Short Sketch of North St. Eleanors” was published 16 Dec 1905, along with his picture. There were at least a couple of other articles about the early French Settlers of Lot 16. The Summerside Journal republished his series of 4 articles about “The First Settlers of St Eleanors” on 1 Mar 1937, 8 Mar 1937, 15 Mar 1937, and 29 Mar 1937,

- Published in “The Past and Present of Prince Edward Island”, 1906:
“Hubert G. Compton, a well known and successful farmer of Lot 17, was born at St. Eleanor’s, PEI, on June 20, 1831, a son of Major Thomas C. and Hannah (Jeffrey) Compton, both natives of England, the latter born on the Isle of Wight. The pateral grandfather, Hon. Harry Compton, also a native of England, came to PEI in 1804, bringing with him one son and a daughter, his wife having died at an early day. They located on Lot 17, in St. Eleanor’s district, he being an officer in the British army. In recognition of his valuable services, rendered in the branch (2 brothers having lost their lives in the rebellion of 1798, in which he took part) he was given Lot 17, and located his home near Richmond Bay, giving his place the name of “The Pavillion” in recognition of a building which he erected from material brought from England. He continued to reside on this estate until about 1826, though he had already disposed of the Miscouche district, then returned to Europe, locating in France, where he made his home until his death. Prior to that event, he made over the balance of his property to his son [Thomas] the subject’s [Hubert’s] father. The latter [Thomas] was the only living son when he came to PEI, and [Thomas] made his home on the estate during his life. He was prominent in his communicty and served as a member of the local assembly for a number of years.
The subject of this sketch [Hubert G.] was the youngest son in this family and is the only one now living. He received his education in a private school in Charlottetown, and also under the instructions of a private tutor. He then clerked for the Theophilus Chappell at St. Eleanor’s for some time, then, in partnership with his cousin, Charles Compton, engaged in business at St. Eleanor’s in which they continued a short time. Mr. Compton then engaged in farming on the old homestead, in which line he has since been successfully engaged. On the 13the of November, 1854, Mr. Compton married Miss Mary Pope Thomas, a native of PEI and the daughter of Captain Ewen Thomas, a native of Waterford, Ireland. Mr. and Mrs. Compton celebrated their golden wedding in 1904, the occassion being a very enjoyable one. To them have been born the following children: Sarah Hope, the wife of Washington Carr, of Ramsay’s Bridge, PEI; Annie Laura, the widow of Harry Britain, late of Boston, Massachusetts; Ambrose, living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; James, of Portland, Oregon; Minnie and Bessie, in Boston, Massachusetts; Stanley, at home; Gertrude, deceased; Adolph and Priestly, in Portland, Oregon; Belle, now Mrs. Alex Kennedy, of Saranac Lake, New York; Percy, of Boston, Massachusetts; Eleanor, at home.”

- TRAITS: big. Known as Big George.

- MARRIAGE: Married by license Rev. Herbert Read. Witnesses Benjamin Darby, Victoria Compton, Charles Compton , Benjamin Mills Eliza and George were second cousins. Big George was a brother of Charles who married Eliza's sister.

- George Compton was a farmer in St. Eleanors after he moved from Charlottetown when he was a young man. George Compton took up farming on land his wife Eliza inherited from her father, Thomas Compton. My guess is that George learned farming from an uncle, a member of the Haszard family. They owned a lot of land. They lived just outside of Charlottetown in what was called Bellevue. George's mother was Harriet Clarissa Haszard and she married William Spencer Compton. Harriet and her husband died relatively young and are buried in the Protestant cemetery in Charlottetown. My guess is that George Compton and his siblings were adopted by relatives (Haszards).

- Big George was a brother of Charles who married Eliza’s sister. After Eliza's death George remarried to Janet, surname unknown.

- 1861 Census: listed as farmer in Lot 17; 4 C. of Eng/1F under 5; 1F 21-25/2M.

- 1903 DEATH: age 66, died suddenly in 1903. Is d.o.d on tombstone 22 Feb 1908?
Published on 2/25/1903 in the Summerside Journal, Compton, 5 1, Death of George Compton.
Obituaries of George Compton (via Bob Butt: The Morning Guardian printed George Compton's obituary on February 23, 1903 on page 8. The Daily Patriot printed his obituary on February 21, 1903 on page 4.):
- The funeral of the late George Compton St Eleanor’s takes place this afternoon at 2 o’clock, to the St. Eleanor’s Episcopal Cemetery.
- The sudden death of George Compton, St. Eleanor’s which occurred Friday night atout 10.30 o’clock, was a painful surprise to this community. About half an hour before his death Mr. Compton, always conspicuous for his robust and healthy appearance, was sitting by the fireside conversing pleasantly with his wife and daughter, and apparently in his usual good health. Just before retiring he remarked that he did not feel well. A physician was sent for but he had expered before medical aid arrived. Deceased was 66 years of age and was one of the most prominent and popularr farmers in this district. Besides a widow the following four sons and five daughters are left to mourn: Clifton A. of Wetaskawin, Alberta; William D., St Eleanor’s; Fred G., St. Eleanor’s; Leopold at home; Mrs. Sydney Richardson, St Eleanor’s; Mrs. Henry Compton St Eleanor’s, Mrs. L.A. Haszard, Charlottetown, Mrs. D.R. McLennan, Charlottetown and Miss Elanore at home.
- The sad news of the sudden death of Mr. George Compton will be heard with regret, not only in St. Eleanor’s, but also throughout the west and in Charloottetown, where he was well known, respected and esteemed. The deceased had been ailing for some months past from rheumatism, but no serious results were anticipated. Last evening he complained of not feeling well, and went to bed. A doctor was sent for before, but when he arrived Mr. Compton had passed away. The deceased was born in Charlottetown 66 years ago. In 1862 he removed to St Eleanors, where he engaged in farming. He became recognized as an authority on agriculture, and has delivered many practical addresses on the subject. He was twice married, first to Miss Compton of St Eleanors, and in 1895 to Mrs. Thomas McKinley, sister of Messrs Richard Hunt and William T Hunt. Among the surviving members of his family are three daughters, Mrs. David McLennan, Mrs. Louis A. Haszard, of Charlottetown, Mrs. Henry Compton, of St. Eleanor’s and Miss Clemmie at home [think this is a misprint - Eleanor was at home], Clifton the eldest son is engaged in busi- at Wetaskawin, Alberta, and there are three sons at home, Willilam, Fred and Leopold. The funeral will take place at St Eleanors on Monday at 2 p.m.

[A] legal document drawn up in 1903 showing George Compton's assets at the time of his death. He died intestate. It shows the number of animals, tools, farm equipment, etc. he had when he died. By the way his second wife was Janet Hunt.
