- 1919 marriage: Also included in this tree was his marriage to Lilian Helen Griffith (1875-1966) on 22 Oct 1919 at St Pauls Church, Canterbury, Victoria AU, Officiating Minister Rev Heyliger Dewhurst.    But no sources are cited; no image. The connection in this tree is to the Griffith side; Helen’s parents: Thomas H Griffith 1842-1913 and Elizabeth H Dewhurst 1843-1911).]

From other researchers:
- [Looking at the 1902 marriage news clipping] the name is unmistakable, second, the Canadian connection, then, St John's Highton is very close to the Louis Edward cluster of homes in Geelong, and a couple of Louis' children were also married there. I would be very surprised if Percival was not visiting relations in Geelong when he met the lovely Miss M'Leod. There is a clan of M'Leods in the area and her parents are buried at Highton.

Percival Charles Richardson
Gender: Male
Birth: estimated between 1848 and 1904
London, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada
Son of Lewis Richard Richardson and Melinda Jane Richardson
Husband of Elizabeth Irene Richardson and Lillian Helen Richardson
Brother of Melinda D Richardson
Half brother of Annie Sutherland; Emily Richardson; Henry Thompson Richardson; Mary Catherine Richardson and Louis Edward Richardson

Can't find Percival's birth date. Lewis Richard married Melinda between 1871 (death of 1st wife) and 1873 (birth of daughter). Melinda was abt. 30 yrs at marriage so plenty of time for more children. Percival marries in 1902 so I would expect him to be no less than 20 yrs in 1902 so he could have been born as late as 1882 - maybe. Melinda would have been abt. 40 yrs by then, not a great time for childbearing, and Lewis much older. My guess is Lewis and Melinda married 1872, had Melinda Jnr 1873 and Percival in the next 2 or 3 yrs, which makes him born 1874 - 1876.

When Percival Charles marries Elizabeth, Highton in Geelong, just up the road from Louis Edward Richardson [half brother] and his clan, in 1902, both his parents have died in Ontario. Perhaps Percival decided to spend his inheritance visiting his Geelong cousins. There also seems to have been a breakdown between Lewis Richard's first family and his second with Melinda. My impression is that the Canadian branch of the family also seems to travel more than the Australians. Australia has been a prohibitive distance from everywhere except New Zealand, and overseas travel was fairly unusual for ordinary people until WW1 sent thousands to the UK where they could meet long lost relatives.

Percival's father dies 1899 and his mother 1901.

Probably staying with Louis Edward or one of the clan in Geelong, Percival meets and marries Elizabeth Irene M'Leod of Highton, at Highton 1902. Percival is next working as a mounted police constable at Tumut NSW - the very same job his cousin Louis Edward has in rural Victoria. Has Louis Edward provided a role model? In March 1905 he is transferred from Wagga Wagga to Tarcutta. See docs for some articles. Elizabeth dies and is buried 1914 at Box Hill Cemetery, so she, at least, has been living in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. There is a possible infant born 1913 in Geelong area, who likely also died. See docs. Elizabeth might have moved from the rough country around Tumut for the end of her pregnancy. One can only try to guess. Did she go to her parents for her confinement?

Percival marries Lillian Griffiths in 1919 at Canterbury (Sydney). Percival lives at Yoorooga, Tumut, and Lillian in Albury. Her family are from Albury and her father is MLA for that electorate. They are living in the areas around Tumut, or Wagga Wagga, I think, and Percival becomes 'a grazier'. See docs.

1920: Percival sells "Yoorooga" his Tumut station, and possibly another, "Califat" in the same area. It is unclear to me whether they are the same property, ie Yoorooga is located at Califat, or they are two properties being sold at the same time. There are several articles referencing "Yoorooga" being bought and sold, with owners other than Percival, and possibly with Percival selling more than once. All I can imagine is that "Yoorooga" was a much larger station sold in parcels, of which Percival owns one of 583 acres. This would help to explain how he went from being a mounted police constable to hob nobbing with landed gentry in a relatively short time. 583 acres is tiny compared with the thousands of acres that made up a real cattle or sheep station. Perhaps Percival began with buying a small slice of "Yoorooga" when it was gazetted for closer settlement, then went on to bigger things. His marriage to Lilian in 1919 suggests he was already on his way to bigger things.

It is also difficult to be clear about exactly to locate "Yoorooga" - at Mount Horeb? At Califat? At Tumut? It seems probable that all the local names are in the Tumut District.

I am adding a lyrical description of "Yoorooga" from 1910.

Percival is quite a wealthy man by 1920 and takes Lillian to London, Ontario, Canada in 1922 to visit his roots. Unclear if any family left there, and he reports none on his border declaration when they cross into USA.

The border crossing declaration at Niagara Falls US customs says that Percival and Lillian arrived in "Makura" to Victoria in British Columbia, visited London Ontario, and Percival is 47 yrs old. Claudia has sent me a number of passenger declarations for Percival and Lilian visiting Canada and US in 1922, and 1936/7/8 See docs. Eventually all will become clear - I hope.

1934: Percival buys a substantial sheep/cattle station near Tumut, and sells it in 1936 before setting off again to Canada and the US.

They celebrate their silver wedding anniversary in Albury 1944. See docs

1948: Percival dies at Mosman, NSW

ALSO: Percy has become a little complicated hasn't he? I have done a trawl and clarified a few things which I will post one day soon.
He is not short of a quid because he married money. His father-in-law is a wealthy grazier and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) ie state parliament. His Brother-in-law is a senior manager or director of Dalgety Co, major stock and station agents engaged in the buying and selling of large cattle and sheep stations as well as the national wool clip, who gets a huge obit when he dies at his Toorak mansion in Melbourne. Toorak at that time was home to the creme de la creme of the squattocracy and rural station owners who keep city mansions as well as large station homesteads. Percy has fallen on his feet. Unclear whether he owned "Yoorooga" before his marriage, but it seems unlikely. Possibly a manager? However, he was buying and selling thousands of acres of lush grazing in one of the most desirable locations in a very dry continent. He was a JP, and undertook various other gentlemanly pursuits, including golf.

In Australia 'grazier' refers to a person who makes a living from 'grazing' beef cattle for market, and/or sheep for wool and meat. Usually they own or lease thousands of acres because Australia, even in the greenest areas, is subject to long droughts, and stocking rates are quite low. This is a mass farming and mass marketing operation for international sale, as distinct from farming which is more hands-on, smaller scale and local. Percy probably benefited from Dalgety's inside knowledge and ability to get him a good deal. From the end of WW1 he is a very wealthy man.

[Possible birth of daughter. Caption: February 5, 1913 - Corio, Greater Geelong City, Victoria, Australia
I am not sure this is our Percy.
C and L are often misread by busy editors and copywriters.
Did Elizabeth Irene go to her family, or to the Richardsons for her confinement rather than stay in Wagga Wagga? Possible. She dies in 1914 and is buried at Box Hill Cemetery.
Not enough to be confident this is Percival and Elizabeth.
