RESEARCH NOTES:
- 1841 census, Sussex England - 3 Edmund’s listed, none match (unless listed as age 15 [1826; age perhaps rounded down], living with the Farrant family in St John Under the Castle, Sussex)

- No Sussex marriage found on ancestry.com (unless to Mary Field, 14 Apr 1839 in Mayfield Sussex - he would have been about 16)
- Sussex marriage index on disk ends at 1837 latest. Only 2 Edmund’s listed - latest marrying in Dec 1832 - doesn’t seem like a match.

- possible death FreeBMD Q2 1874, Lewes, East Sussex, Vol 2b, page 111, age 52 (about 1822)

> 1851 Ontario census lists an Edmund Richardson, age 28 [abt 1823] born England, living in Canada West (Ontario), Dist. 22 Lincoln County, Sub Dist 210 Niagara, page 19, line 44, Roll C_11736, Sched: A
> 1871 Canadian Genealogy Index, 1600s-1900s, lists an Edmund Richardson living in 1871 in Niagara Township, Lincoln, Ontario, a tailor (from Lovell’s Canadian Dominion Directory for 1871, John Lovell, Montreal, 1871, vol/pg 560) - no age

- A family story written by the granddaugher of Eleanor Louise “Nell” (Richardson) Andrew during their (pre 1992) conversations about family history:
[Granny’s = Nell Richardson’s] [gr. grandfather = Henry Proctor Richardson Sr who died 1850]
“Granny’s grandfather Henry Proctor Richardson b. 24 Feb 1825 Sussex Co. Inherited Granny’s gr. grandfather’s money.
“Edward (Syd’s uncle) took Henry out to Australia when he was young and just escaped from Maori’s, then brought him back to England, then brought Lewis [Louis crossed out] James at age 18 to Canada. Lewis James was educ’d in England by church of England minister or tutor, settled in Ontario, m’d a widow woman with 2 children.”
Under the name Lewis James it says “same person *” and under the name of “Henry Proctor Jr. Richardson Dec 22 1855, had 3 children: Proctor, Fred & Daisy (address Detroit MIchigan)” there is a circled note “*(Ed., Louis & Henry) bros., sister Damarus m’d)”

There seems to be a bit of ambiguity here as to the generations, as Ed, Louis Richard, Henry and Damaris were some of the children of Henry Proctor Richardson I (1789-1850) and not the children of his son Henry Proctor Richardson II (1825-1905) Also, the Maori’s are in New Zealand rather than Australia (so where did they really travel)? Trying to unravel this story, it would fit what we now know if “Edward” was actually “Edmund”, uncle of Sydney and the brother of Louis Richard (b. 1836, a different person than Louis James b 1864, Sydney’s brother). The travel dates are not specified is this story, and it is unclear whether “Edward” took his brothers and/or his nephews on travel adventures because the names appear in both generations.

Regarding Ed’s first trip with Henry:
>If it was with Ed’s brother Henry Proctor II, he was born 1825, only 2 years after Ed. They would both have been young men in the early 1850’s, having a travel adventure with inherited money before settling down. We don’t yet know if or when Edmund married, but we do know that his brother Henry Proctor II married Elizabeth Harris in Mar 1853 in Lambeth London, leaving Edmund free to travel with another relative to Canada in 1854.
> If it was a younger Henry (his nephew and Sydney’s brother Henry Proctor III b. 1855), they probably wouldn’t have travelled until the 1870’s or 1880’s when Henry was old enough . We believe that Henry Proctor III was born in England and married a Jane Denning in Metcalfe Ontario in 1880, but don’t yet know when he emigrated. So if he is the Henry who traveled to Australia and back to England, he would have had another trip to Canada in time to marry Jane in 1880

Regarding Ed’s second trip with Louis:
> If it really was Louis James, his nephew b 1864, then he would have been 18 in 1882 - this would have been about the time that his brother Sydney emigrated to Ontario.
> If it was Edmund’s younger brother Louis Richard b 1836, he would have been 18 in 1854 - this is an appropriate date to be traveling with money possibly inherited in 1850. We have found a Lewis Richardson age 35, born in England and a cheesemaker, listed in the 1871 Canada census, living in Adelaide Ontario with his wife Catherine (age 45, 10 years his senior) and 5 children: Ann 14, Emily 13, Henry 9, Catherine 7, and Lewis 4. All children are listed with the surname Richardson and born in Canada, but it is possible that the first 2 are from her previous marriage (marriage record not yet found).

I think it more likely that is was actually Ed’s brother Louis Richard rather than his nephew Louis James who traveled with him likely in the 1850s. And that it was this Edmund (rather than an unidentified Edward) that did the traveling.

I have not found proof of any of these travels.

From other researchers:
- I found an Edward Richardson (Agricultural labourer) who arrived in Wellington, New Zealand aboard the ship Katherine Stewart Forbes on 11 June 1841 - age 19. I note that there is some confusion around an Edmund or Edward Richardson in your family and wonder as a long shot whether there might be a connection.

RESEARCH NOTES:
- it is possible that as a lad of 16 in Sep 1841 he set sail for New Zealand: a Henry Richardson, farm labourer, Brede, single 16 (applic reg 17), departed Gravesend Sep 1841 Deal 27 Sep aboard ship Lord Auckland, arr Wellington NZ 7 Feb 1842, then to Nelson 27 Feb (assisted passenger). If so he didn’t stay because he was back in England in 1853 to marry Elizabeth.

Richardson, Henry, 16 - farm labourer

NOTE: There is another Henry Richardson who did end up in New Zealand, dying there in 1898. Although this Henry was also born in Brede, it was a few years earlier in 1821, so he would have been 21 in 1842, not 16 as per the NZ passenger list. According to baptism records, this other Henry was son of Thomas and Mercy and married a Louisa Fishenden in Kent England in 1851 (assume he didn’t emigrate to NZ until after that?).

From other researchers:
- (1) A search of electoral rolls between 1853 and 1981 shows nobody with the exact name "Henry Proctor Richardson" on any electoral roll in New Zealand
- (2) Pursuing a line of inquiry through cemetery records, I looked for any record for a Henry Richardson which was a close match for the data about the Henry Richardson who arrived on the Lord Auckland on 27 February 1842. I am quite confident that there is no Henry Richardson buried in the Nelson , Marlborough or Wellington provinces - the most likely places for an immigrant to be buried had they stayed in New Zealand. This suggests that the Henry Richardson who arrived on the Lord Auckland, did not stay in New Zealand. This is not a definitive proof, but a likelihood.
The closest I got was a Henry Richardson buried on 5 August 1898 in the Karori cemetery in the Wellington region, but being aged 77 means that he had to be born in 1821 0r 1822 which means he would have been aged around 20 or 21 on 27 February 1842 when the Lord Auckland arrived in Nelson. I don't think that this is a match.
On 15 Mar 1853 when Henry Proctor was 28, he married Elizabeth HARRIS, daughter of James HARRIS (1799-1877) & Lucy RANDALL (1797-1872), in St Mary's Chapel, Lambeth, Surrey, England. Born on 17 Jul 1828 in Lower Slaughter, Gloucester, England. Christened on 3 Aug 1828 in Lower Slaughter, Gloucester, England. Elizabeth died in Derby, Derbyshire, England, in 1902; she was 73.

- 1851 Census, Upper Slaughter, Gloucester: NOT living in parents household

- Daughter of James Harris, Carpenter. A witness at Elizabeth’s wedding was John Simpson, and Martha Harris (mother, sister, cousin or aunt?) [probably her sister]

RESEARCH NOTES:
- may have had a brother William Harris

- Lower Slaughter is in NE Gloucester, just NNW of Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucester. Gloucester itself is in south central England west of South Wales, and is surrounded by: Monmouthshire, Wales (W), Herefordshire (NW), Worcestershire (N), Warwickshire (NE), Oxfordshire (W), Wiltshire (S) and South Gloucestershire (SW)
- Upper Slaughter - The village of Upper Slaughter in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds is one mile away from Lower Slaughter and resides on a gentle grassy slope above the stream that connects the two villages. Once the village was dominated by a Norman castle but all that can be seen of it today are the remains of the motte and bailey. The building that dominates Upper Slaughter is the beautiful gabled Manor House which is one of the finest buildings in the area. The oldest part of the house dates from the 15th century but the front is Elizabethan. The Manor is now a hotel. [from http://www.cotswolds.info/places/upper-slaughter.shtml]

- 1892: a Mr. George Richardson, living at Peasmarsh, visited the Bishop of Chichester on 8 Aug 1892, complaining about disturbances to the Richardson “private burying ground” in the churchyard the previous Sept. George’s brother James Case was living at Peasmarsh in the 1891 census.

- They had no children probably because George wasn't at home very much!

- Elizabeth died in 1884 and George in 1900.
- With each census George had a different job and I think they may have separated because they don't appear together in any census after 1861 when they were living in Brede where George was a beer seller and farmer. In 1851 he'd been a letter carrier. In 1871 he was working as a herdsman in the west of England (Herefordshire I think) and Elizabeth, a woman of independent means, was visiting friends in Hackney, London. I can't find George in 1881 but Elizabeth was visiting her niece Mary Coventry (née Hallaway). In 1891 George was visiting someone in Tunbridge Wells and he was a commercial traveller.

- From 'The East Sussex Village Book' by Rupert Taylor. In the Brede section he tells the sad story of Damaris Richardson. Talking of the churchyard he says:-
" But it has a relic of a tragic Victorian love story in the form of a small oak cross bearing the single word 'Damaris'. Damaris Richardson lived with her uncle in a modest cottage in Rectory Lane. She was a beautiful orphan who worked at the rectory and in a small residential school operated by Rev Maher to supplement his income. She fell in love with Lewis Smith, the handsome young son and sole heir of a wealthy Brede landowner, and they would meet in secret at the west wall of the churchyard - she on the graveyard side and Lewis on the other, in the grounds of the big house where he lived with his parents.
They soon agreed to become unofficially engaged. But affairs are hard to conceal in a small village community and somebody told Lewis' father of the clandestine meetings. He angrily forbade any ideas of marriage - beautiful, charming and respectable Damaris might be, but she stood far below the station of the Smith family. Lewis, threatened with being cut off without a shilling, gave way to his father.
Presumably there was one final meeting of farewell beside the wall before they parted forever. Damaris, they say, died of a broken heart at the age of 22 and was buried near the trysting place. on September 4th 1856. Her grave was` unmarked until the Rev Aylward, who years later succeeded Mr Maher as Rector of Brede and remembered the orphan from his days as a pupil at the village's school, commissioned the erection of the cross. Lewis Smith never married, living alone and withdrawn in the big huse he inherited. Villagers say he was often to be seen walking gravely in the gardens, close to the wall. He died, age 65, on february 1896 and was interred in the family tomb on the north side of the church".

- Lewis Smith was her second cousin as his grandmother was Susan Richardson (who married David Smith), a sister of Damaris’ grandfather Henry.
- There was another book that contains local legends, titled "Brede, The story of a Sussex Parish" by Edmund Austens - written 1946, now out of print. - http://www.brede.org.uk/history-of-brede/
In Edmund Austens book "Brede, The Story of a Sussex Parish" the author writes...
"Damaris Richardson was an orphan who lived with her uncle ** Thomas Wakeham Richardson in a house in Rectory Lane. She spent a good deal of her time at the Rectory assisting Mrs Maher in household duties connected with the Rector's residential pupils.
Damaris developed into a very beautiful young girl. A young man -Lewis Smith- the son of wealthy parents living at Church House, fell passionately in love with her, and they became engaged to be married. His parents strongly objected to the marriage and forbade it, as they considered the girl's social position inferior to their own.
This resulted in the engagement being broken off and the wrecking of two young lives.
Damaris died at the age of 22, and was laid to rest on September 4, 1856 in a grave on the exact spot by the wall where she was accustomed to keep tryst with her lover on the other side. The wooden cross was erected by the Rev. Aylward[6](who was Rector between 1851 and 1885) some years later after returning to the Parish and enquiring on the whereabouts of Damaris".[7]
** Thomas Wakeham A Richardson was actually the 1C1R to Damaris, not an uncle

CAUTION - 1841 census, there is also a Lewis R age 15 (~1826, son of James & Eliza)
CAUTION - 1851 census, there is also a Lewis Richard b ~1845, born and living in Brede Sussex with mother Sally - brothers Charles Guy Richardson (age 4) and William Nabl (on film looked like abbreviation for Nathanial), age 1. - relatives.

NOTE: HIs first wife Catherine died in 1871 and he remarried a Malinda Jane. Is Jane the same as Malinda J from his gravestone?
Son Henry and daughter Catherine are still there, and perhaps Emma was Emily? although Emily likely married in 1879 - that might explain the baby Proctor (age 1 mo) but not why they recorded with her maiden name (enumerator error?). With a baby Proctor in the household, they’ve got to be related at least ...
