- According to a news article published in “The Newmarket Era. North York’s Popular Family Newspaper” of Newmarket Ontario Canada, Friday 6 Jan 1933, front page:
“Mr Wm Edwin Richardson, son of Harry and Maria Richardson, was born in Newmarket in 1865, educated at the public schools and assisted his father at his trade until he learned cabinet making in Joseph Millard’s Factory on Timothy Street West, the property being now occupied by several neat brick residences.
In 1894-5 he spent two years with Holt & Lukes, Railroad Construction Co. in Quebec. In 1898 he went to the Yukon with McKenzie & Mann, and assisted in building the Railroad from Glenora to Lake Leslin. On returning home he built the first office of the Office Specialty Mfg. Col, and three years later he was awarded the contract for the large addition to the Office Specialty Works alongside of the railway track. After the fire in the Methodist Church he had the contract for its reconstructed school rooms. Ed was also contractor for the Stuart Scott School on Lorne Ave. as well as the present Palace Theatre.
Since Mr Ed Richardson went into business for himself he has constructed over 75 houses in Newmarket and has been a prominent factor in providing accommodation for our growing population, and made himself generally useful.
On February 6th, 1900, Mr. Richardson married Miss Florence Rogers, daughter of the late John Rogers of Bradford, it being the birhday of both bride and groom; and both are members of Trinity United Church.
Mrs. Ed Richardson was particularly active in Red Cross work during the Great War and on the death of Mrs. L G Jackson she was elected President of the Ladies’ Aid of the Methodist Church, in which capacity she proved herself a worthy successor for many years and is still active in church and charitable work.”
