- As a boy, Mel attended a 1 room school in the Sherbrook School District and later, a 2 room school in the neighbouring St Eleanors School District (where they had high school courses such as algebra, geometry, Latin and French). He could only attend school for part of the year as he had to work 6 months (May to Oct) for his father at the cheese factory. He also and farm work to do, morning and afternoons. He worked at the cheese factory for about 4 seasons (in his 13th to 16th years) and was even left in charge to handle the whole job a few times his father was away.
- His father then sent him to Summerside to the Town Clerk Mr. Massy (a family friend) to learn bookkeeping. The walk into town was good exercise. Sometimes he had to act as clerk to record the Police Court trials of the town drunks. The bookwork was to come into good use in his later years
- The next spring, Mel’s father wangled a job for him in a new general store & grocery in Summerside run by a young Mr. Lidstone. He worked dawn til dusk, delivery on foot, one or two baskets as the town was small, the distances were not long, averaging under half a mile. Salary was 2.50 or 3.50 per week.
- That Fall (as he had the previous Fall), Mel left and partnered with friend and school mate Walter Frank doing oyster fishing (Malpeque oysters), and had an average to better season. He was trying to save money to travel to Winnipeg where free 160 acre homesteads were available.

- From his sister Nell’s memories: Mel left PEI when his sister Nell was 11 (about 1905) [about age 19], and settled in Winnipeg and learned mattress making. Then he built a place in Victoria, he was married and during the depression he lost it. There were no jobs to be had. So he went to the Portland, and lived there for a while, and then came to Seattle and he was running a mattress factory there, there was 5 with himself, and then the war came on, and they took all the small factories, into one big [one?]... So he was out of a job.

- FAMILY: parents lived in Seattle, father was a sea captain. Brother liked to travel; sister Jean Smith married John McClure, a banker with 1st National Bank. From photos: her brother Bill had a daughter Barbara similar in age to her daughter Jean; they went swimming together with the grandparents in July 1928.
- her family (Hunter / Smith) came from Glasgow near Clyde, and came out to North America about 1900. Sharon’s grandfather was a Cruz in Walla Walla, a dentist. Sharon’s mother was a “Up the Grove” who married a Mullins. [this should probably read Marion rather than Sharon?]

- 1943 news item published in the Charlottetown Guardian (PEI), Saturday September 4, 1943, pg 8, col 8
Deaths. Richardson - At Seattle, Wash., on August 28, 1943, George Lewis Richardson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Richardson, St. Eleanors, PEI, aged 51 years.

- Memories from his son: “My earliest memory of Mom and Dad are that they owned and operated Empire Mattress Co. (I spent many a day there when I was very young). After that Dad worked as night watchman for Bluebird Cold Storage until his death. I saw in some of the material that he was a fire fighter for Spokane, I really doubt that. ...
I think some of the dates and numbers conflict with each other, I guess that is easy to happen with old records.
What I always heard from Mom and Grandma about Dad and the war, he was in France and yes he did have issues with mustard gas and I’m also very certain the he suffered from Diabetes. Our bible shows Dad’s birthday as 1883.”

- 1914: when she was 20 she moved to St Eleanors, and “went to Charlotte[town] that [previous] winter to spend it with her mother’s first coiusin and her husband. They were old people. And when I came back, father couldn’t get along without me you see, so he sold the place, sold the farm, and bought a place in St Eleanors.”

- RESIDENCE: lived in Sherbrooke as a girl (2 miles from St. Eleanors) where father had a small acreage and a market garden. Family then bought a big 2 storey house in St. Eleanors. After marriage lived on farm in N. St. Eleanors (~100 acres), then in house in St. Eleanors. Moved to Duncan, BC area in approx. 1950 (see group picture, Christmas 1950 in Duncan BC) - Harry and most of her family and already left, while she had stayed behind to nurse ailing parents. Her own health problems, she left PEI before her parents death in 1951 (likely in 1950).
Resided in the Duncan BC area for the rest if her life, first in a house on Herd Road which she really liked, particularly the large veranda. I don’t think the family was there very long, needing to move closer into town to be closer to work (at the dairy?). Their next house was at 5784 Garden Street in Duncan, backing on the lane along side the lumberyard and near the train tracks. Later in life she lived with her daughter Harriet, also living at the time on Garden Street. She lived for several years at the Cowichan Lodge on Tzouhalem Road, Duncan.

- WORK: Nurse - no formal training, nursed parents and relatives in the community. Trained as a dress maker, but didn’t like it (she was too “particular” and always got behind on the finishing work).

- HEALTH: had heart trouble in late 1940s due to stress of looking after parents and being separated from husband and family. Went on low salt diet for high blood pressure. Ruptured appendix about 1972. 1st cataract operation June 7, 1976, Victoria General hospital. 2nd operation for cataract Sept 27, 1976. Home from hospital Oct2/76. Surgery on left knee May 8, 1981. May 4, 1983 had marrow biopsy - mild type of bone cancer. May 17, 1983 scan of liver and bowel showed lots of gall stones. Infected appendix scar Jan, 1984 due to black thread still in place.

- FUNERAL: St. John's Anglican Church, Duncan, BC
- BURIAL: St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery, Duncan (Somenos), BC, Feb, 1992. with her husband and later her grandson Arnold.

- ENGAGEMENT: According to Nell, she and Harry dated for a while when she was 16, but she broken it off. Then later they got back together and were engaged for about 2 year.
His daughter Harriet didn't know how long her parent's engagement was but thought it was quite long. Dad bought the ring with the money (all of it apparently) he earned harvesting outside Winnipeg (one time) and then came back to PEI when his father became ill. Harriet said Birks [jewelers] opened a branch in Charlottetown about that time around l914. Eleanor now has Granny's engagement ring that was purchased by Grandpa for $50 in Montreal (?).
