John deserted from the army in South Africa and was believed to have disappeared in Johannesburg, abandoning his wife and daughter who were not eligible for a pension. It is reasonable to assume he died in South Africa at some time after WW1.

1888: Elizabeth Minnie Richardson is born at Drouin, Victoria. Mother Mary Ann Stitson, father Joseph. Reg No. 10779.
A story is told that when [Elizabeth’s] twins, Maurice and Elva were born, Walter and Lizzie were living in a timber camp in a [bush] hut similar to the one shown [see photo], near Noojee. They were so poor that there was no food or milk, and that the twins were constantly crying because Lizzie had no milk to suckle them. Maybe apocryphal, may be exaggerated, but the story was told by Lizzie. Lizzie was age 29 by this time, having been the baby of her family, and motherless since childhood. One can only imagine how hard it must have been.

Walter and Lizzie with their children are leaving Thorpdale to live at Metung. The Great Depression has hit. They still had the house at Metung in the 1950's when [grandchildren] Neville, Kevin and Marie all had mumps there one Christmas.

- Photo composite of James, Rosehannah and their children: Maurice Edwin Gorman, Walter James Gorman, Nell Tilgner, Anthol Leonard Gorman, Paddy Gorman, Dan Gorman, Rosehanna Gorman
- Story from Walter’s granddaughter: Mum [Irene] told a story heard from Dad's [Gorman] family, that when Maurice and Elva were born, they were taken home to a hut somewhat like this one [see photo of bush hut in Noojee area], at Noojee where Walter was working at a timber mill. The story goes that they were so poor in 1917 that there was no food and Lizzie did not have breast milk for the babies. She was at home in the hut with 2 screaming babies she could not feed.
There is no evidence to support or negate this story, so far. But, during the war, Walter seemed to be with his mother at either Allambee East or Childers, helping to keep the farm going.
I can imagine he and Dad might have lived in these conditions when they were working the saw mills in the 1930's.
