RESEARCH NOTES:
- 1852 - JE appears to have married a Henry Sarles in Hastings in 1852
- 1853 - There's an entry for a death registration for a Jane Elizabeth Sarles at Hastings in the June quarter of 1853 ref 2b 19, so it would seem to be her.
On 26 Jun 1852 when Jane Elizabeth was 34, she married Henry SARLES Jr. (141) , son of Henry SARLES Sr. (-1859) & Sarah “Sally” RICHARDSON (58) (~1806-1863), in St Clements, Hastings, East Sussex, England. Born bef 26 Mar 1830. Christened on 26 Mar 1830 in St Clements, Hastings, East Sussex, England.

- Henry was the eldest son of Henry Sarles (a jeweller and watchmaker) and his wife Sarah, who was a Richardson from Brede!

(Note: Mr Horace Fildes, the keen antiquary, states the old records show that the emigrant ship Arab, 484 tons, left Gravesend on June 3, 1841, with 208 settlers, most of whom were intended for the Nelson settlement. She arrived at Port Nicholson on October 16, at which time, of course, there was no such place as Nelson. No subsequent mention is made of these settlers, so we must assume that they drifted across the Straits from time to time as occasion offered, after the sight of Nelson was chosen, or else they waited for the rest of the people in the Fifeshire and her three companions.

- Re your family story: It was James Robert Richardson who went to New Zealand and was threatened by Maori who had no appreciation of the concept of private property, nor that the white guys believed they had bought large tracts of land in exchange for woollen nightcaps, etc. The migration agents who recruited them landed them in a new "settlement" that they were expected to establish, but the Maori were quite fierce so the ship "Arab" took them to what is now Wellington which was, in 1841 barely existing. James and Eliza removed quickly to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania), a convict settlement established abt. 1790ish, so relatively civilised by 1841. By 1848 they are settled at Connewarre in Port Phillip District (Victoria). There are original records for James Robert and Eliza Maria in Geni if you can access them, except their marriage certificate ...
[In 1841] The New Zealand Company was very busy recruiting farm workers to clear land so the share holders could become absentee landlords without exerting themselves. Rural labourers were in dire straits in England, the famine was beginning in Ireland, and the Highland Clearances in Scotland soon after, so there were plenty of desperate takers [to emigrate to New Zealand].

TOWN TALK
… A rather impudent robbery was committed on Wednesday last outside the Show yards,
on the occasion of the Polo match. A market gardener, named James Richardson, who
resides at Kensington
, drove his horse and cart alongside the fence at the yards and
enjoyed the game from his stand in the dray. He allowed several larrikins*to occupy
positions on the dray with him self, and when the game was finished his companions
left him and he drove homewards. Before going far, Richardson felt iu his coat pocket
for a purse containing £9, which he had placed there on driving up to the yards, and
then discovered that it had been stolen. Enquiries have been instituted since the
robbery was reported, and last night a youth named Edward Williams, re siding iu South
Geelong, was arrested in Malop-street by Sergeant Toobey, on suspicion of having stolen the money.

- 1877 James was admitted twice to the Geelong Infirmary, Geelong, Victoria, Australia:
> 28 Jun 1877 - 9 Jul 1877: James Robert spends 2 weeks in the Infirmary with an ulcerated leg. Discharged, cured, on 9 July 1877.
> 15 Oct 1877 - : Perhaps someone can figure out what James was being treated for this time. My best guess is something like rheumatism, second word is 'cured'.

[NOTE by M Rowan: James Robert, gardener, is seriously injured by a kicking horse. This poor man has no luck at all.]
“A gardener named James R. Richardson, 1 who resides at Kensington, had a narrow
escape from a violent death yesterday morning. He had taken a horse into the stable near
his honse for the purpose of giving the animal a feed, when a conple of horses , in
the stable commenced kicking at one another. Whilst. endeavoring to prevent them
doing injury to each other, Richardson received a kick from an unshod animal."
One hoof struck him just under the jaw, inflict ing a severe wound; the other hoof
struck him violently on-the chest. The injuries were of such a character as to necessitate Richardson's immediate removal to the Hospital.”

A DETERMINED SUICIDE.
What appears to have been a very deliberate and determined suicide was brought under the notice of the Geelong police yesterday forenoon. A man named James Robert Richardson, aged 6O years, who earned his living in a small way by farming at a place called Donny brook, near Kensington, and eight miles from Geelong. had not been seen in the locality for some days. This aroused suspicion in the mind of a Mr Henry Barker, a resident of Donnybrook, and upon his going to Richardson's hut, a very miser able and filthy hovel, he found the unfor tunate man hanging by the neck from a rope which was tied round a rafter of the front room of the house. From the surrounding circumstances, it is surmised that the deceased stood upon a table in the room, tied the rope to the rafter, placed his neck in a noose at one end of the rope, and kicked the table from under his feet, thus strangling him self. The table was found lying on its side on the floor. The body presented the appearance of having been hanging for two or three days. With the assistance of Messrs M. Reegan and M. James, the dead body was taken from the noose by Mr Barker, and information conveyed to the police. Yesterday afternoon a magisterial enquiry was held by Mr Heron, P.M., when it was ascertained that, fourteen years since, the deceased was confined for a period of twelve months in the Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum, and that since that time he had exhibited signs of insanity, and had been living a lonely kind of life for some time. Lewis Richardson, a brother of the deceased, who resides in the neighborhood of Kensington, deposed that the deceased had two sons in the country, one being a minister at Murtoa. Dr. William Shaw, who made an examination of the body, stated that it was that of a man very much emaciated through want of proper nourishing food, and the appearances were those of a man who had died from strangulation. The Coroner, after commenting upon the disgraceful state of the deceased's hut, concluded that the deceased had committed suicide, but that there was no evidence to show in what state of mind he was at the time.

the motion of Councillor Coul- ston, seconded by Councillor Matthews,
Councillor J. R. Hopkins was unanimously elected chairman. Councillor M'Master was
re-elected delegate to attend the conference in Melbourne, and a large number of suggestions
and propositions by local bodies were considered, and in most cases agreed to.

[An unrelated case] The sittings of the Geelong County Court were held to day before his Honour Judge
Hackett. A number of undefended cases and others for small amounts having been disposed
of, the case of Demorlis v. Raw, a claim for £49 19s. damages, for having published
a slander, was heard before a jury of four. Mr. Skinner appeared for the plaintiff,
and Mr. Fink for the defendant. The slander complained of was that Raw had stated that
he and others had lost some sheep about 18 months previously, and that Demorlis had
stolen them and put the skins in a waterhole. Various witnesses testified to having heard
Raw make the statements referred to, and the plaintiff stated that in consequence of the
reports he had found it difficult to get employment. The defendant however,
stated that he had never accused the plaintiff of having stolen the sheep. The defendant
stated that he had lost some sheep and found the skins in a waterhole. He had never
accused Demorlis of having stolen them, although he had suspicions. The previous
witnesses were responsible for what they said. He told the truth. A son of the
defendant deposed to finding the sheepskins in a bag that had contained potatoes sold by
Raw to Demorlis. The jury returned a verdict for the defendant, costs to be taxed.

[Richardson case] A magisterial inquiry was held to-day at Donnybrook, about eight miles from
Geelong, on the body of a small farmer named James Robert Richardson, aged 60
years, who was found hanging by the neck, suspended by a rope to a rafter in his house
at Donnybrook. From the evidence adduced at the inquiry it appeared that the deceased
had not been sound in his mind for some years, and that some time ago he was con-
fined in the Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum for 12 months. Lately he was hard pushed with
regard to money matters, and this appears to have been preying on his mind. The police
magistrate found that the deceased committed suicide, but there was no evidence to
show what state of mind he was in at the time.

From other researchers:
- Louis Edward Richardson, brother of James Robert, ... followed his brother [James Robert] to Port Phillip District, the colonial name for Victoria [Australia]. Louis Edward was occasionally reported as Lewis, but I suspect that had to do with reporters transcribing a more common version of the name, Louis being a little unusual in colonial times. Louis Edward arrived 1857 in "Admiral Boxer" and took up farming about 2 or 3 miles from where James Robert was living. Plenty about him in Geni, too. His son, also Louis Edward, became a mounted police constable in remote settlements. You will notice some of the Sussex family names continuing in their colonial connections, such as William North Richardson, and a few more Henrys.

Could he have moved to Canada? Probably not if he moved to Australia in 1857. But the following family must be somehow related, considering the name Proctor... [Probably Louis R Richardson, age about 45 and his 2nd wife Melinda Jane] ...

From another researcher:
- I've found the marriage of Louis E Richardson and Sally Wells in 1844 in the registration district of Rye and the birth of their 3 sons there. Charles Guy who was baptised on 29/08/1847 was born in the last quarter of 1846. In the 1851 census Sally and the boys were living in Brede, but Louis Sr. may have been checking out the situation in Canada. None of them appear on the 1861 census, so I suspect they all immigrated to Canada and Sally died and Louis remarried sometime before 1859. According to the 1851 census, Sally was born in Biddenden, Kent about 1819. I have Wellses from Biddenden on my tree , the descendants of William Wells and Elizabeth Mawle (1747) and I've been told by Tony Wells, a distant cousin, that Sally was one of them. She was supposedly the daughter of William Wells (1784) and his wife Sarah Winton. The problem is that William died about 1813 and the Biddenden parish records that I consulted were in a deplorable condition. I suppose Sally may have had a different father. I do know that the Mawles of Brede kept in touch with the Wellses of Biddenden, so Louis and Sally may have met that way. It would be fun to prove that this Sally is family.

- Thinking about the possibility that he had 2 wives: Sally Wells, and Jane ?, if in fact this is the Louis that moved to Ontario Canada and started another family - see [1881] census [as above]:
Emma Richardson, 1859
Proctor Richardson ,1860 [should say 1880]
Henry Richardson, 1862
Catherine Richardson ,1864
Edward Richardson, 1868
Lynda Richardson, 1873

This was probably a different “Edward” who had help emigrating to New Zealand:

- 1841 census: age 15 living with parents

- 1845: listed as farmer’s son of Udimore at baptism of daughter Elizabeth Bertha

- Mar 1851, Widowed, age 25, (no occupation given) with parents in Brede, SSX

From other researchers:
- JG married twice; first to Elizabeth Campbell ... the daughter of James Campbell and Sarah Stunt. She was born in Brede about 1822, married JGR in 1845 and must be the Elizabeth Richardson on the list of Burials - 12/02/1846, because on the 1851 census he was a widower. He subsequently married Caroline Hannah Ransom in 1853. She was born in Northiam about 1832 and I think they must have emigrated as their trail grows cold. In the 1850's a lot of people were drawn to the gold diggings in Victoria, Australia, so maybe ...

From a descendant living in Melbourne Australia:
- Yes i am quite proud on my great grandfather and his brothers and their running ability. I will outline the family tree in Australia as i have it. John Gladwish Richardson married Caroline Hannah Ransom (1836 - 1916 Ballarat Victoria Australia). They had:
Alfred Henry (28 August1858 Lake Connaivaire near Geelong Victoria Australia-31 May 1928
Ballarat Victoria Australia)
John Richardson(1855-dec)
William Richardson(1856-dec)
George Richardson(1864-dec)
Louis Edward Richardson(1866-dec)
Arthur Richardson(1870-dec)
Albert Richardson(1872-dec)
Robert James Richardson(dec)

- I have found records of 10 children for him in Australia but i think he may have also had some children in England

- John Gladwish Richardson, a third brother, also settled near James Robert. I have less information for him because John Richardsons are like blades of grass, and ensuring I have the right person is nigh impossible without more effort than I have expended. Also, John Gladwish moved away from Connewarre and Leopold where his brothers stayed, and I have not confidently connected him to a specific location - although there is a high probability I have it right.
In 1845 when John Gladwish “Jack” was 23, he first married Elizabeth CAMPBELL. Born abt 1822 in Brede, East Sussex, England. Elizabeth died in 1846; she was 24. Buried on 12 Feb 1846 in St George Church, Brede, East Sussex, England.

- Daughter of James Campbell and Sarah Stunt
- Looks like Elizabeth R, nee Campbell died in childbirth, as she was only married one year.
- Sussex Burials Index: Elizabeth Richardson, 12 Feb 1846, St George Brede, 24y
They had one child:
In Q1 1853 when John Gladwish “Jack” was 31, he second married Caroline Hannah RANSOM in Rye Reg Dist, Sussex, England. Born in 1836 in Northiam, Sussex, England. Caroline Hannah died in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, in 1916; she was 80.
