A Find-a-Grave posting of William Carpenter’s will lists the above Benjamin Boorman as William’s brother-in-law – and thus Sophia Boorman Carpenter is Benjamin’s brother. They could be siblings of Rachel, but the discrepancy about Benjamin Boorman’s parents makes this questionable.

- “A Benjamin Boorman (1792-1886) arrived in New York State apparently between 1822-1824 with his wife, Sarah Hosmer Boorman, and 4 children. They went to western New York, in or near the towns of Sherman and Mina. Uncertainty about his relationship exists because there are two possibilities for his parents: James Boorman (~1761 – ~1845) and Mary Wood (1764-1844), and William Boorman and Mary Copping Boorman. A transcript of Sherman Cemetery (NY) grave markers states that the parents of Benjamin Boorman (1792-1886) were William Boorman (ca 1766 – ca 1836) and Mary Copping Boorman. But, I’m thinking (hoping?) that the transcribed information was incorrect, and that his actual parents were James Boorman (~1761 – ~1845) and Mary Wood (1764-1844). “
- Cannot find baptism of any children at Headcorn or Smarden for either family [Joseph Hosmer or Sarah Hosmer Boormaman] so probably not CofE.

On Thursday last, Mr and Mrs BOORMAN celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at the residence of Joseph BOORMAN of this place. There has been born to this couple 10 children, of which 8 are still living and were all present excepting one, Benjamin, who lives in California. Edwin the eldest is 69, Mary Ann (DODGE) 67, Joseph 63, Charlotte 61, Sarah 58, John 56, Benjamin 53 and Emily 50. Mr BOORMAN is 93 and his wife is 89 they also have living 27 Grandchildren, 52 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren making 5 generations.

On Thursday last, Mr and Mrs BOORMAN celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at the residence of Joseph BOORMAN of this place. There has been born to this couple 10 children, of which 8 are still living and were all present excepting one, Benjamin, who lives in California. Edwin the eldest is 69, Mary Ann (DODGE) 67, Joseph 63, Charlotte 61, Sarah 58, John 56, Benjamin 53 and Emily 50. Mr BOORMAN is 93 and his wife is 89 they also have living 27 Grandchildren, 52 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren making 5 generations.

p. 17-18: “William Colgate, the first of the great soap manufacturers started to make soap on a considerable scale in 1806 at a plant established on the New Jersey side of the Hudson (eastern NY). Most of the potash used in the soap business at first came from Germany, but later there was a sturdy demand for the local product as presented by black salts. Except for Colgate and other Atlantic Seaboard buyers, the best market for black salts was to the soapmakers at Montreal. Mrs. William Colgate was a Boorman and one of the associates in the company was John Boorman, a relative of Benjamin Boorman of this locality. There is a family tradition that when Benjamin Boorman (1792-1886) came to this country in 1825, he first worked for a few months for Colgate Soap Company. Whether this family connection of the Boormans had anything to do with the purchase of black salts in the town of Mina is entirely a matter for conjecture.”

- Locations: East Sutton * [where this James was born] is a parish approximately 6 miles south-east of Maidstone in Kent, England and close to Ulcombe. It is also N of Headcorn and Biddenden, NE of Staplehurst, and NNE of Frittenden **, all in relatively close proximity.
Beneden *** is a little further S of Staplehurst and SE of Cranbrook Kent
- from another researcher: I think this “senior” James Boorman (~1761 - ~1844) and Mary Wood were parents of a “junior” James Boorman (~1799 - aft 1881) who apparently lived in England his entire life, married Anne ____ (~1805 - bef 1851), and was the father of John James Boorman (1831 - 1918) who ultimately lived in Gloversville / Broadalbin NY USA. - Was his name John James Boorman or just James Boorman [originally recorded as John]? Or were there 2 different sons, John and James? Another researcher says there were 2 sons James and John based on their father’s will.
- Locations: East Sutton * [where this James was born] is a parish approximately 6 miles south-east of Maidstone in Kent, England and close to Ulcombe. It is also N of Headcorn and Biddenden, NE of Staplehurst, and NNE of Frittenden **, all in relatively close proximity.
Beneden *** is a little further S of Staplehurst and SE of Cranbrook Kent
- from another researcher: I think this “senior” James Boorman (~1761 - ~1844) and Mary Wood were parents of a “junior” James Boorman (~1799 - aft 1881) who apparently lived in England his entire life, married Anne ____ (~1805 - bef 1851), and was the father of John James Boorman (1831 - 1918) who ultimately lived in Gloversville / Broadalbin NY USA. John James Boorman (1831 - 1918) married Eliza Judge Boorman (1835-1901) and was head of the 1883 Boorman immigrant family who came to the USA in about 1883 and all went to Gloversville / Broadalbin NY after living with the Fullagars near Leeds NY. "I am running a Want Ad in The Argus, Melbourne, Australia paper for a Mary May Parkin, age now about 80, a descendant of a Thomas Boorman (1808-1887) & Sarah Ann (Sanders) 1810-1863. In 1938 this Mary May Parkin was living in or near Warburton, Australia and the Vital Sttistics Dept there shows no death certificate for her, She was well versed on Boorman ancestry." [of 80 in 1938, she would have been born abt 1858 - link not yet determined]

- 1881 UK Census: Thomas Boorman (1807-1887), son of James Boorman (~1761-1845), was farming at Little Moatenden in 1881. Same for 1871, and apparently 1861, 1851, and 1841 -- farm name not given for 1861 and 1851, but brief descriptions (90 acres, etc.) seem to be same farm as in 1881 and 1871; name is given for 1841 -- just Mottenden. (Little and Great Moatenden are about 700 feet apart -- thus easily could be part of same farm. In 1817, Thomas Boorman's father (and Rachel's, we think), James Boorman (~1761 – ~1845), was described in a book as "of Mottenden." The family seems well-linked to Moatenden . . .
