“In the Maidstone and Kentish Journal 12 Jun 1882 the following report under Wateringbury was found. (Newspaper film located at Maidstone Library)
SAD CASE OF SUICIDE
On Thursday last an inquest was held at Wateringbury by J Rogers, Esq, the coroner for the Tonbridge district, on the body of Mr David Boorman, 74 years of age, for many years landlord of the Duke's Head, who committed suicide by hanging himself on Wednesday. From the evidence it appeared that Mr Boorman had been paralyzed for two years and a half and confined to his bed. Within the last few days he signed a petition to wind up his business affairs in liquidation, since which time he has been in low desponding state, but his relatives had no idea that he intended to attempt his life. In order to raise himself in bed a handkerchief was tied in a loop to the bed post, and on Wednesday the deceased was found with his head through this, and his body on the floor, quite dead. The jury returned a verdict of suicide while in a state of temporary insanity.”
On 19 Feb 1832 when David was 25, he married Mary Ann COOK in St Margarets, Rochester, Kent, England. Born in 1810 in Wateringbury, Kent, England. Christened on 4 Feb 1810 in St John The Baptist, Wateringbury, Kent, England. Mary Ann died in Wateringbury, Kent, abt Jan 1879; she was 69. William died in Wateringbury, Kent, England, on 10 Sep 1887; he was 77. Buried on 15 Sep 1887 in St John The Baptist, Wateringbury, Kent, England. Occupation: Master Butcher. Religion: C of E.

- c1830 - When William first arrived in Wateringbury (c1830) he was a pork butcher which translated means that he went round to houses where the owners had kept a fattening pig in the back yard, feeding it leftover scraps. William would kill and dress it. The meat was usually shared with friends and neighbours who, in turn, would share their pig when it had been fattened. It took William some years to acquire the shop and become a "proper" butcher.

- 1870 - Harriett's [Harriet Elizabeth Boorman’s] father attempted to kill himself in 1870 he was rescued by his daughter-in-law (Betsy) and a man called Chapman who responded to her cries for help.

Another researcher says: “I also found an article regarding Ellen's father William (my 2 x great grandfather), brother of David who also attempted suicide, thankfully without success.  The details regarding William's vigil at Ellen's coffin were direct memories as told to me by my father having been handed down by his father and grandfather.”
“William was actually bound over at West Malling having promised not to try to kill himself again.  The attempt happened almost exactly a year after the death of his wife, Rebecca, who passed away from cancer of the stomach. I imagine it must have been an even more horrendous way to die then than it is now so perhaps that is why William was so down.  Thankfully he does seem to have got over it and eventually died of natural causes many years later. ”
