He was a doctor of medicine and practiced as such, but I presume he had no medical degree as he was called Mr. and not Dr. He was considered clever. Cousin Eliza had a family but my Mother lost touch with her as her family grew up and I know nothing of her subsequent history.” As summarized in NIgel’s notes: "5 children who died, 1 daughter Eliza Boorman b 1839, d Dec 13, 1872 who married Walbourne?? From other researchers [with my added comments]:
- Emigrated to Australia about 1850 with 10 children [must have been after 1851 census - see below for passenger list, only 5 children with them]. One daughter Mary Ann Lillywhite (k'Polly) was left behind. She was adopted by Aunt (Ann) Scoons who had no children [Ann Boorman, Jane’s sister, married a Dalby Scoons]. Polly married an Uncle [nephew?] Scoons and had 3 children.
From a 1950’s memoirs: “Aunt and Uncle Lillywhite immigrated to Australia in or about the year 1850, taking with ten of their eleven children. One daughter, named Mary Ann, they left behind with Aunt and Uncle Scoons [Dalby Scoons and Ann nee Boorman] who, being childless themselves, wished to adopt her. She was generally known as Polly Scoons and she eventually married a nephew of Uncle Scoons and had three sons. I do not know how many of the ten young Lillywhites were boys to carry on the name, but probably a goodly number of their descendants are to be found in Australia today.”

- 1851/2 Emigrated to South Australia as “government emigrants”
Ship Adelaide, 700 tons, Captain Dan W Stevens, from London (Gravesend) 7th October / Plymouth 8th November 1851, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Austratia 31st January 1852.

[Boughton under Blean - village between Faversham and Canterbury, SW of Herne Bay

From other researchers:
- Thomas’ sister Louisa was also listed in this register [Herne Bay Union Chapel, Kent], and the births may have been entered after the fact when the family moved from Headcorn to Boughton, so it is unclear where either child was actually born.
“Louisa Boorman Daughter of Thomas Boorman and Ann his wife of the Parish of Boughton, formerly of Headcorn was born August 17 180? [writing smudged, looks like it could have been 9 overwritten with an 8]? - written above Thomas so presumed older.

From published family history by C Winired Dyer:
- “When [Thomas] Boorman became of an age to start work, he was apprenticed to a coach-builder and served his seven years apprentice-ship in the Camberwell neighbourhood. When that period ended he had next to find himself a post as an improver or journeyman. So he set out one morning from his home in Camberwell and walked on stopping at any likely looking Coachbuilders' premises to enquire if a workman were required.
“He must have walked some distance. Presumably through Kennington, Clapham and part of Battersea before he found himself approach Wandsworth by way of East Hill. Going down the hill he came to a Coach builder's works with the name of Stamper. He enquired there and was taken on, found himself lodgings in Wandsworth and settled dawn to his new job.”

From published family history by C Winired Dyer:
- “At what time Grandfather [Thomas] Boorman first became connected with the Congregational Church in Wandsworth I do not know. Certainly he and Grandmother attended that Church all their married life and Grandfather was a deacon for quite fifty years, up to the time of his death. But I do not know whether he went there first because of his attachment to Mary Ann Green or whether it was the other way round. Grandmother was said to have experienced 'Conversion' and she was certainly somewhat puritanical. Great-grand- father Green was certainly Church of England and so it would appear, were the Boorman great- grandparents.”
“They were both exceedingly upright, conscientious people - somewhat narrow minded in their religious views and most uncompromisingly honest and straight forward in their dealings. The Wandsworth Congregational Church, to which they belonged, was founded by the Huguenots’, who settled when they came over from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. During the many years when Grandfather was in the prime of life and his business was flourishing. I believe he gave the Church liberal financial help.”

RESEARCH NOTES
From other researchers:
- BIRTH: Age listed as 40 on the 1851 census. 1881 census lists him as age 70, widower, coach builder, born in Headcorn (Ref 0659-29-2). Nigel Masters states birth date of Aug 23, 1810 (from family bible - same as christening?)

- CHRISTENING: LDS International Genealogical Index (Batch 7702122, Sheet 28, Source Call no 10158902 (film)) screen print. Obtained copy of microfilm entry form from LDS.

- MARRIAGE: LDS marriage search of Main International Genealogical index4.00 - British Isles, Batch No. MOO6262, Source 254576. Obtained printout of page from parish register.

- in 1851 Kent directory there is a Thomas Boorman farmer listed (obviously not this Thomas), who lived in Goudhurst (4.5 miles NW fro Cranbrook, 5 S from Marden staion, 11 E from Tunbridge). Wonder how connected?

- Worked as a Wheelwright, as listed of birth records of son Thomas. Listed as coach maker in 1851 census; coach builder in 1881 census.
- Lived on High Street, Wandsworth, as listed on birth registration of son Thomas.
- 9 High Street - This is where Thomas Boorman set up his coach building business c. 1830.

From Findagrave
- Wandsworth Old Burial Ground, now often known as Garratt Lane Old Burial Ground. It was consecrated as early as 1808 and had fallen into disuse by the turn of the Twentieth Century, surprisingly early. As with Mount Nod, which is a short distance away, it has connections with the Huguenot community. It has been laid to grass as a public amenity, but there are still memorials to be seen, including members of the well-known family of Chatting, a corruption of the Huguenot name Chaterlaine. Near the Chattings are memorials to members of the Bowman and Rucker families ... [No Boorman names yet indexed in this cemetery]

From another researcher on his trip to Wandsworth, Apr 2010:
“We tracked down the Garratt Lane burial ground. The area has now been almost entirely cleared of gravestones and it is a pleasant grassed area, a little oasis, in the middle of the hubbub that is Wandsworth. When we arrived is was full of office workers eating their sandwiches and strolling along the paths. [We] quickly checked the few remaining headstones with no luck and were just going to take a photo of the area when I spotted a "path" of felled headstones at the far end of the park, I was amazed and delighted to find the headstone for Thomas and Mary Ann amongst them.

Sadly, the stone having been felled to make a path almost certainly gives us no clue to where Thomas and Mary Ann are actually buried within the site but I was still thrilled to find this tangible proof of their last resting place. The top of the stone is still in good condition but it deteriorates near the bottom and some flakes have broken off making is totally unreadable in places. I offer you my translation and I make no attempt to fill in the blanks even though you and I know what they are in most cases:

In memory of Mary Ann the beloved wife of Thomas Boorman who died Jan 5th 1862.
Blessed are the dead which die in The Lord from henceforth yea saith the spirit that they may rest from their labour and their works do follow them.

Also Harriet daughter of the above who died May 14th 1856 aged 2 years

Also interred in the burying ground of the Old Independant chapel 4 infant children of the above:
Elizabeth born 20 mar 1840 died 4th May 1840
John Dalby born * Apr 1841 died 27 Apr 1841
Elizabeth *********************
Frederick **********************

Also of the above Thomas Boorman who died * Sep 1894 in his * year.”

From another researcher on a trip to England in 2015:
- Thomas Boorman's Wheelwright and Coach Building business may have been at 9 High Street near what is now a busy intersection, now the site of a college.
- Some of the Boorman records at at All Saints Church Wandsworth
- The Garrett Lane burial ground is located a block away from the High Street. It is becoming more of a grassy park as the old headstones crumble and fall. We searched and searched for the stone marker of Mary Ann Boorman wife and daughter Harriet of Thomas Boorman located near the path on the east entrance to the grounds.
Reads: In Memory of Mary Ann the beloved wife of Thomas Boorman who died January 5th 1862 agesd 45 years. Belssed are the dead which died in The Lord from henceforth yeas ? the spirit that they may rest from their labour and their works ? ? them .

On 13 Sep 1836 when Thomas was 26, he first married Mary Ann* GREEN , daughter of John GREEN & Mary Ann, in Saint Giles, Camberwell, Surrey, England. Born on 16 Dec 1816 in Wandsworth, Surrey, England. Mary Ann* died in Wandsworth, Surrey, England, on 5 Jan 1862; she was 45. Buried on 10 Jan 1862 in Wandsworth All Saints, Surrey, England.

- 1816 BIRTH: Family bible gives birthdate as Dec 16, 1816. Age listed as 34 in the 1851 census.

- EDUCATION: "Grandmother Boorman was well educated, having been to the best school in Wandsworth at the time. The large house where she went to school was still standing when I was a child and had an observatory on the roof. She learnt French, and I had, as a child, the French Grammar book which she had used at school and which had been handed down to my mother. One of the subjects in the school curriculum was described as ‘Geography and Use of the Globes, Terrestrial and Celestial’." C.W. Dyer

- BIOGRAPHY (from memoirs of granddaughter C. Winifred Dyer): “Before long [Thomas Boorman] became aquainted with Mary Ann Green, whose father was a tailor in Wandsworth High Street. She was one of a family, and I think she was probably the eldest. She certainly had two younger sisters, both still living in Wandsworth till I was pretty well grown up. They were Aunt Hannah Green and Aunt Adelaide Berryman. Grandmother had also a younger brother, Uncle Fred, who went off to Australia as a young man, but was never heard of again, and was believed to have been lost at sea on his way out.” [see booklet for further information]

- LOCATION: lived at High Street, Wandsworth, England when son Thomas was born.

- 1836 MARRIAGE: married St. Giles, Camberwell, England, Sept 13, 1836

- 1841 not listed with parents in Wandsworth. Living with her husband, two young children Thomas and Mary, and others.

-1862 DEATH: the family information booklet supplied by Reg Angus on page 1 advises Mary died at 45 years and 3 weeks on Jan 5, 1862 (as per family bible) “Grandmother Boorman died in 1862, at the age of 45 years, having had 14 children, of whom nine lived to grow up and marry. She lived long enough to see at least one grandchild.”

- The gravestone in the Garratt Lane Old Burying ground was small and laying flat near the pathway on the east side of the cemetery.

- From the photo: Gravestone seems to be set into the earth, and the right side is more eroded. It says: “In Memory of MARY ANN the beloved wife of THOMAS BOORMAN who died January 5th 1862 aged 45 years Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth _____ _____ the spirit that they may rest _____ their labour - and their works _____ low them Rev _____ [end of quote] Also HARRIET daughter of the above who died ________ 1856?” [rest of gravestone not included in the photo].
[The quote is from Revelation 14:13, King James Version: “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”]

RESEARCH NOTES
- one source shows 1 daughter: Frances Eliza Boorman, born Q1 1866 Wandsworth - probable error as I don’t think they were married until 1882 ???? There was a Frances Eliza Boorman b. 1866, daughter of William Scoons Boorman - a probable mix up.

- 1911 census: [place of birth and marital status doesn’t match]
There is a listing of an Emma Boorman, age 71, single, born St Mary Cray, Kent , a patient in Farnborough, Orpington, Bromley RD (many pages of patients, poor law guardians (masters of workshouses, infirmary nurses, nurse mental wards), servants - Institution: Bromley Union Workhouse, Infirmary, Childrens Homes, Casual Wards, Farnborough, Kent
[ St Mary Cray, Orpington,London

The only death of an appropriate age seems to be:
- 1913 Deaths Jun 1913
Boorman Emma 73 Bromley 2a 646

- Another tree on ancestry says she was the daughter of William Stanton (1798-1869) and Mary Ann Ridgeley (1818-1885)
