- 1927 Obituary from The Observer 10 Dec 1927 An identical Obituary appeared in the Register 5 Dec 1927:
“Mr. James Lillywhite.
Mr. James Lillywhite, who died on Saturday at Magill, was born at Marden, Kent, on December 15, 1834, and had lived in the reigns of four English Sovereigns. One of his earliest memories was of having witnessed the royal progress of Queen Victoria on the day of her marriage with Prince Albert. Hailing from Upper Norwood, eight miles from London, Mr. Lillywhite arrived in South Australia in the sailing ship Adelaide, on which his father was schoolmaster, and his mother the matron for migrants. The new arrival found his first employment at Mitcham as caretaker of a property for a Scotsman who was going to the diggings. Later he held a situation at Tyeeka (hollow in rock), a property belonging to Mr. Therold Grant, and in 1857 he was engaged in the Bank of South Australia at Gawler. On leaving Gawler he was transferred to the Union Bank of Adelaide. He spent 35 years in the Bank of South Australia and two years in the Union Bank. On retiring from the bank in 1894 he purchased land at Scott’s Creek, and planted an orchard, which is still flourishing. He acted as auditor to Prince Alfred College for 25 years, and to the Methodist Book Depot for 34 years. He was also secretary for 30 years to the trustees of the Magill Baptist Church. He was a member of the Adelaide Philharmonic Society, and for 30 years played the violoncello at the annual performances of “The Messiah.” His magnificent health and preservation of his faculties he attributed to three factors - total abstinence from spiritous liquors, refraining from the use of tobacco, and a love for long walks. The Lillywhites were a numerous family, and the famous cricketer was a distant relation. A peculiarity which marked all those of the name that the late Mr. Lillywhite had met was that they were without exception lefthanded.” [transcribed from news clipping]

Obituary Correction James Lillywhite: Letter written By Hugh Lillywhite (James's son), published in Register Sat 10 Dec, correcting aspects of the Obituary notice:
“LATE MR. J. LILLYWHITE. From HUGH LILLYWHITE, Magill: -- May I correct an error in the obituary notice of my father, Mr. James Lillywhite, appearing in MOnday’s Register. It is stated that he was secretary of the Magill Baptist Church Trust for 30 years. It was the Methodist Trust of which he was secretary. My father was connected with the Mothodist Church practically all his life. I find in looking through his memoirs that in the year 1840 he obtained permission from his employer in London, a stonch Churchman, to attend the Wesleyan Chapel in Lambeth. Soon after arriving in South Australia he associated himself with the Wesleyan Church here. About 1855 he played the harmonium at the opening of the new Wesleyan Church at Wawlkerville. This instrument, by the way, was built by my father and his brother William, and sold to the trustees of the church for 35 pounds. While residing in North Adelaide he worshipped at the Archer Street Church, holding several offices there, including that of organist, Sunday school teacher, and secretary of the Tract Society connected with that church. In 1860 he removed to Gawler, and was organist at the Wesleyan Church there from 1862 to 1869. He was also a member of the church trust there. It was at Gawler that he met his wife, Sarah, a daughter of the Rev. Matthew Wilson, at that time the Wesleyan Minister there, and commondly spoken of by members of his congregation as “Father” Wilson. He went to Magill about the year 1875, and during the whole of the time since until his death he was a member of the local Methodist Church, holding various office, and until old age prevented him, oding active and effective work for the good cause.”
On 8 Sep 1863 when James was 28, he married
Fianna Sarah* WILSON in Yankalilla, South Australia, Australia.
Born on 9 Dec 1843 in Hihifo, Tongataboo, Tonga. Fianna Sarah* died in Magill, South Australia, Australia, on 3 Sep 1918; she was 74.
They had the following children:
Mary Ann “Polly” LILLYWHITE (Jane Eliza BOORMAN7, Thomas6, William5, William4, William3, Thomas2, William1).

Mary Lillywhite 4
FAMILY: adopted by Aunt Scoons and stayed in England when parents emigrated to Australia. She later married Scoons, a nephew of Scoons (Uncle?) and had 3 children
- Her Aunt, Ann Boorman "married SCOONS. No issue but adopted Mary Ann Lillywhite (who married SCOONS, a nephew of Scoons)"
From an early family history: One daughter Mary Ann Lillywhite (k'Polly) was left behind [when her parents and family moved to Australia]. She was adopted by Aunt (Ann) Scoons who had no children. Polly married an Uncle Scoons and had 3 children.
In Q1 1861 when Mary Ann “Polly” was 25, she married
John SCOONS, son of William SCOONS & Elizabeth, in Rotherham Reg Dist, England.
Born in 1820 in Maidstone, Kent, England. Christened on 13 Mar 1820 in Maidstone, Kent, England.

- Mary Ann “Polly” m. John SCOONS Q1 1861 Rotherham district.
They had a son Alfred Dalby bap. 22 Nov 1870 Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire so obviously related to Dalby SCOONS who contributed to the origin of William Scoons BOORMAN's name.
Marriages Mar 1861
SCOONS John Rotherham 9c 467
Lillywhite Mary Ann Rotherham 9c 467
The district Rotherham spans the boundaries of the counties of Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and West Riding of Yorkshire
- The SCOONS worked at the Star Inn/Hotel, 15 High Street, Maidstone. In 1840 John SCOONS was the Innkeeper. In the 1841 Census I think that might be Robert FOWLER with a John BOORMAN working there as a servant aged 25, so born 1811 to 1816. There were others unnamed. One may have been Dalby SCOONS as he was a waiter there in 1846 when he witnessed the Will of Richard DAY http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mrawson/day1846.html
In 1828/9 William SCOONS was the Innkeeper, so probably the father of John. Have a look at http://deadpubs.co.uk/KentPubs/Maidstone/maidstone.shtml
RESEARCH NOTES
- Ann Boorman "married [Darby] SCOONS. No issue but adopted Mary Ann Lillywhite (who married SCOONS, a nephew of Scoons)" - if true then this John was Darby’s nephew, and therefore John’s father William was a brother to Darby Scoons.

RESEARCH NOTES
- Originally thought that he likely immigrated to Australia about 1850 with parents. [after 1851 census] Not shown on the passenger list with parents in Jan 1852, so did he emigrate separately?
- Why is his middle name Scoons? Edward’s older sister Mary Ann “Polly” married a John Scoons, but this occured after Edward was named, so perhaps there was more than 1 connection to the Scoons family?
From an earlier family history: One daughter Mary Ann Lillywhite (k'Polly) was left behind [when her parents and family moved to Australia]. She was adopted by Aunt (Ann) Scoons who had no children. Polly married an Uncle Scoons and had 3 children.
- 2 researchers report 8 children, with only slight variances - see https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/M7ND-VTL
On 16 Jan 1869 when Edward Scoons was 26, he married Kate NORMAN in Normanville, South Australia, Australia. Born in 1845 in Willunga, South Australia, Australia. Kate died in Port Pirie, South Australia, Australia, on 4 May 1929; she was 84.
RESEARCH NOTES
- sources vary on place of birth - was it Yankalilla or Willunga in S Australia?

[common children: Edward, Frank, Lydia Jane, Louisa Rose, Natalie Catherine, Una Terry, Edith, and Lillian/Lilly]
[differences: Jessie VS Lavinia, Albert, Minnie Catherine]
On 5 Sep 1866 when Matilda Terry was 22, she married Daniel THOMAS in Unley, South Australia, Australia. Born in 1818 in England? Daniel died in Unley, South Australia, Australia, on 21 Jan 1884; he was 66. Buried ca 1884 in W T Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
RESEARCH NOTES
- Did he really die in 1884? If so he couldn’t have been the father of the last 4 children (according to 1 researcher)! It turns out that birth dates for children Lilly & Edith were incorrect. The child Jessie b 1890 seems to be an error, so has been removed from this family
They had the following children:
